Book Left of the Color Line

Download or read book Left of the Color Line written by Bill V. Mullen and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifteen new essays explores the impact of the organized Left and Leftist theory on American literature and culture from the 1920s to the present. In particular, the contributors explore the participation of writers and intellectuals on the Left in the development of African American, Chicano/Chicana, and Asian American literature and culture. By placing the Left at the center of their examination, the authors reposition the interpretive framework of American cultural studies. Tracing the development of the Left over the course of the last century, the essays connect the Old Left of the pre-World War II era to the New Left and Third World nationalist Left of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as to the multicultural Left that has emerged since the 1970s. Individual essays explore the Left in relation to the work of such key figures as Ralph Ellison, T. S. Eliot, Chester Himes, Harry Belafonte, Americo Paredes, and Alice Childress. The collection also reconsiders the role of the Left in such critical cultural and historical moments as the Harlem Renaissance, the Cold War, and the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The contributors are Anthony Dawahare, Barbara Foley, Marcial Gonzalez, Fred Ho, William J. Maxwell, Bill V. Mullen, Cary Nelson, B. V. Olguin, Rachel Rubin, Eric Schocket, James Smethurst, Michelle Stephens, Alan Wald, and Mary Helen Washington.

Book excerpt: Echoing and expanding the aims of the first volume, Visualities: Perspectives on Contemporary American Indian Film and Art, this second volume contains illuminating global Indigenous visualities concerning First Nations, Aboriginal Australian, Maori, and Sami peoples. This insightful collection of essays explores how identity is created and communicated through Indigenous film-, video-, and art-making; what role these practices play in contemporary cultural revitalization; and how indigenous creators revisit media pasts and resignify dominant discourses through their work. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Visualities Two draws on American Indian studies, film studies, art history, cultural studies, visual culture studies, women’s studies, and postcolonial studies. Among the artists and media makers examined are Tasha Hubbard, Rachel Perkins, and Ehren “Bear Witness” Thomas, as well as contemporary Inuit artists and Indigenous agents of cultural production working to reimagine digital and social platforms. Book Victorio Acosta Velasco

Download or read book Victorio Acosta Velasco written by Michael Serizawa Brown and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a biography of Victorio Acosta Velasco, a Filipino-born journalist and labor leader who immigrated to the United States in 1924. At this time, thousands of young Filipinos were coming to America to further their education, find opportunity, and realize the idealism the U.S. was rumored to offer. Upon arriving in Seattle, however, Velasco learned that the 'American Dream' hardly applied to dark-skinned immigrants. Devalued by the workforce and spurned by white women, the disillusioned Velasco became involved in Filipino activities, but never conceded his place in American society. Amongst other achievements, he published poetry in nearly a dozen mainstream anthologies on American literature. Ultimately, by the end of the Second World War, Velasco had learned to approach his Caucasian relationships with more circumspection, and also began to experience intra-ethnic conflicts with other Filipinos. This book seeks to counter the negative, one-dimensional portraits of Asian men in popular media, and informs its readers of an authentic and challenging Filipino-American experience.

Book For Jerusalem A Life

Download or read book For Jerusalem A Life written by Teddy Kollek and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The affectionate and enthusiastic memoirs of the Israeli politician, and, since 1965, mayor of Jerusalem.“ — The New York Times Selection of the Best Books of 1978 “Mayor Teddy Kollek’s relation to Jerusalem is not merely that of an elected official to his community; not only that of a Jew the city of his fathers. The connection is intensely symbiotic. Jerusalem without Teddy is as inconceivable as Israel itself would be without Jerusalem. The high‐energy brightness with which he sparkles is the result of this symbiosis... His auburn hair works, heavy and winglike, as he hurries about the city. You see him everywhere. His record is one of construction, reconciliation, improvement. He deals justly, he is enlightened and he does good left and right. Such is the image. Such is, to an extent to be more exactly defined, also the fact. His autobiography, written with the assistance of his capable son, Amos, is called, For Jerusalem: A Life. The title tells it all; life and Jerusalem are for Teddy inseparable.“ — Saul Bellow, The New York Times

Book Major League Rebels

Download or read book Major League Rebels written by Robert Elias and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-13 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating history of the baseball reformers and revolutionaries who challenged their sport and society—and in turn helped change America. Athletes have often used their platform to respond to and protest injustices, from Muhammad Ali and Colin Kaepernick to Billie Jean King and Megan Rapinoe. Compared to their counterparts, baseball players have often been more cautious about speaking out on controversial issues; but throughout the sport’s history, there have been many players who were willing to stand up and fight for what was right. In Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles over Workers' Rights and American Empire, Robert Elias and Peter Dreier reveal a little-known yet important history of rebellion among professional ballplayers. These reformers took inspiration from the country’s dissenters and progressive movements, speaking and acting against abuses within their profession and their country. Elias and Dreier profile the courageous players who demanded better working conditions, battled against corporate power, and challenged America’s unjust wars, imperialism, and foreign policies, resisting the brash patriotism that many link with the “national pastime.” American history can be seen as an ongoing battle over wealth and income inequality, corporate power versus workers’ rights, what it means to be a “patriotic” American, and the role of the United States outside its borders. For over 100 years, baseball activists have challenged the status quo, contributing to the kind of dissent that creates a more humane society. Major League Rebels tells their inspiring stories.
