Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bill Nye's History of the United States They are like the cold, hard, dishevelled, damp, and uncomfortable body under the knife of the demonstrator, not the bright and bounding boy, clothed in graceful garments and filled to ever)' tingling capillary with a soul. We, each of us, the artist and the author, respect facts. We have never, either of us, said an unkind word regarding facts. But we believe that they should not be placed before the public exactly as they were born. We want to see them embellished and beautified. That is why this history is written. Certain facts have come into the possession of the artist and author of this book regarding the history of the Republic down to the present day. We find, upon looking over the records and documents on file in the various archives of state and nation, that they are absolutely beyond question, and it is our object to give these truthfully. These rough and untidy, but impregnable truths, dressed in the sweet persuasive language of the author, and fluted, embossed, embroidered, and embellished by the skilful hand of the artist, are now before you. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Bill Nye's Comic History Of The United States This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book The United States a Graphic History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The United States a Graphic History Classic Reprint written by Louis Morton Hacker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States, a Graphic History In other words, this vast, potential reading public has not been reading serious books, particularly of the non-fiction variety. Why is this? One may hazard a number of reasons. First, perhaps, is to be noted the fact that serious non-fiction books heretofore have been written as a rule for that highly trained minority which has had a university education or its equivalent. Such books too often have employed the special vocabularies to which even the social sciences have succumbed. Also, more frequently than not, books have not been basic books; that is to say, they have assumed a familiarity with underlying assumptions and have taken up a tale which started somethose who have not had university educations. Its text is brief it is not more than words in length. The visual aids it employs, pictorial statistics in this case, are an integral part Of the book rather than simply illustrative material. Mechanically, the book is everything one might wish: its type-face is clear and easy to read; the book's bulk is not excessive; and its price is low. It has been said that the pictorial statistics in The United States: A Graphic History are as much a part of the work as the text itself. Indeed, the reader may obtain a fairly good notion of the nature of the economic develop ment Of the United States, historically conceived either by reading the text alone continuously or by consulting the charts Without any reference to the text at all. But he is likely to get a fuller and more rounded presentation one that ordinarily could have been achieved (through the printed word alone) only in a text four or five times the length of that employed here by a reading Of brief chapters and accompanying charts together. The text, in effect, plays a. Dual role: it is a continuous narrative and at the same time each chapter is explanatory Of the chart associated with it. Book Of Himself and Other Things Classic Reprint

Download or read book Of Himself and Other Things Classic Reprint written by James Hutchins Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Himself and Other Things Bill Nye used a favorite anecdote in his public entertainments. He had a dog that in his ramblings came across a pail of plaster of paris of the right consistency for immediate use. He thought it edible and inviting, and, since he had never seen any before, he ate a good deal. The result was a plaster impression of himself, taken by himself, from an interior view. It may be that no biography is complete without the interior as well as the exterior view. If a different universe walks under your hat and mine universe A may wish to contribute to B's possible interpretation of A. It may be presumptuous to suppose that B considers the matter worth while or even thinks about it at all, and only a great man can proclaim, like Sam Johnson, that he would pre vent the writing of his life by taking the life of the suspected biographer. If a man writes his life himself, he thereby, as it were, takes his life in his hands. Why write it, unless you have a history um doubtedly worth recording? Is a natural question. But minor values may be worthy of a degree and extent of interest. A memorandum of events and thoughts, made by some humble ancestor, is treasured in the family. A somewhat noteworthy career reaches a larger circle. The genius commands wide interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional and Political History of the United States, Vol. 4 I believe that in this volume I have made a not entirely unimportant contribution to the proof of the allegation made above, aproof which it is my firm conviction will yet be furnished by the investigation of the history of slavery - I deliberately say slaverv and not slavery ques tion - in such a shape as to put it forever beyond the possibility of dispute. In my opinion, the volume could become such a contribution, only provided I discussed this period with an exhaustiveness which, spite of my endeavors to treat only of that which is indispensable to the un derstanding of the subject in hand, may weary many readers. This minute and critical entering into details was all the more necessary, since this period has, in many respects - especiallv as regards the finality question and know-nothmg1s1n - partly because of its unrefreshing character and partly because of the tangled and intricate nature of its history - been, in a special degree neglected not only by investigators, but even by party writers. It was, therefore, even more imperative than in the previous volumes, soqfar as space at all permitted, to prove my po'sition fioiiittlie O1iginal souices, ve1batim.othe1wise. Download or read book Bill Nye s Comic History of England written by Bill Nye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bill Nye's Comic History of England The readers of this volume will share our regret that the preface cannot be written by Mr. Nye, who would have introduced his volume with a characteristically appropriate and humorous foreword in perfect harmony with the succeeding narrative. We need only say that this work is in the author's best vein, and will prove not only amusing, but instructive as well; for the events, successions, dates, etc., are correct, and the trend of actual facts is adhered to. Of course, these facts are "embellished," as Mr. Nye would say, by his fancy, and the leading historical characters are made to play in fantastic roles. Underneath all, however, a shrewd knowledge of human nature is betrayed, which unmasks motives and reveals the true inwardness of men and events with a humorous fidelity. The unfortunate illness to which Mr. Nye finally succumbed prevented the completion of his history beyond the marriage of Henry VIII. to Anne Boleyn. He taught her how to waste her rivers from their torrent beds, and scatter them over the land in irrigating ditches, so that the shallow river a child could ford became a stream of fertility, an oasis of blossom and fruit and shrub twenty miles wide. On every page of her unfolding history and growing greatness. He wrote down paradoxes that her writers of fiction hesitated to use, so that the guileless tenderfoot believed in Colonel Jack Hazard, and Truth ful James, and Bill Nye, in refined and rigidly moral gamblers, in pure-minded harlots and generous stage robbers with university degrees, but shook their heads and said, Oh, California stories! With pitying toleration, such as one uses when speaking of the heathen in his blindness, when told of the Big Trees and the YO Semite, and eight crops of peas or alfalfa in one year from the same field.
