[...] La qualité des eaux du lac des Deux Montagnes a été affectée dans le passé par l'activité forestière et agricole, de même que par les effluents des papetières établies dans le bassin de la rivière des Outaouais. [...] Compte tenu de la fragilité de notre environnement et des limites de notre planète, une activité économique durable doit assurer un usage polyvalent des ressources; elle doit aussi tenir compte de la qualité de vie du genre humain et favoriser le maintien de la diversité biologique. [...] Une partie du débit rejoint le fleuve à la hauteur du lac Saint- Louis, par les canaux de Vaudreuil et de Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue; le reste emprunte la rivière des Mille Îles ou, par deux embranchements de part et d'autre de l'île Bizard, la rivière des Prairies. [...] Bien que le secteur Lac des Deux Montagnes du secteur d'étude soit voisin du fleuve et qu'il se trouve, lui aussi, sur les basses terres de la vallée du Saint-Laurent, il s'en distingue par les propriétés physico-chimiques des eaux de la rivière des Outaouais, qui dépendent de la géologie du bassin.
