Download or read book Emery Bigot written by Leonard E. Doucette and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1970-12-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emery Bigot's life spans the most brilliant years of seventeenth-century France. He left some six hundred letters addressed to the four corners of literary Europe; among his correspondents, acquaintances, and friends were men of the stature of Jean Chapelain, Nicolaus Heinsius, Charles du Cange, Richard Simon, John Milton, and Gilles Ménage. He travelled widely and was for some forty years at the very centre pf a firmly established, smoothly functioning network of mutual assistance and scholarly information that linked the countries of western Europe. From Uppsala to Venice, from Vienna to Oxford, Leiden, London: a network which quite naturally considered Paris its centre, and whose members represented every interest, very segment of intellectual society. Bigot was also the creator of what was perhaps the most important private library of his era. Yet today he is almost unknown, and his correspondence, scattered widely, has not been examined thoroughly since his death. This detailed biography and critical study is based on Bigot's letters and on other unpublished materials in France, Italy, Holland, Denmark, and England. Although much effort has been directed towards research on the more prominent contemporaries of Bigot, he himself – better known to the scholars of his period than a Racine, a La Fontaine, or a Molière – has gone unappreciated. Professor Doucette's book shows that Bigot represents an essential and seriously neglected side of French and European humanistic studies in the seventeenth century. Bigot's role as an outstanding classical scholar and bibliographic expert, his publications and projects for publications, his correspondence, and what is perhaps the most important facet of his activity, his collaboration with other authors in seventeenth-century Europe, all receive full and intensive coverage. This book holds special interest for scholars in several disciplines, especially historians of French literature and civilization, classicists, philologists, bibliophiles and bibliographers, and historians of religion.
Download or read book Jean Chapelain Soixante Dix Sept Lettres Inedites a Nicolas Heinsius 1649 1658 written by Bernard Bray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Branding Books Across the Ages written by Helleke van den Braber and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As marketing specialists know all too well, our experience of products is prefigured by brands: trademarks that identify a product and differentiate it from its competitors. This process of branding has hitherto gained little academic discussion in the field of literary studies. Literary authors and the texts they produce, though, are constantly 'branded': from the early modern period onwards, they have been both the object and the initiator of a complex marketing process. This book analyzes this branding process throughout the centuries, focusing on the case of the Netherlands. To what extent is our experience of Dutch literature prefigured by brands, and what role does branding play when introducing European authors in the Dutch literary field (or vice versa)? By answering these questions, the volume seeks to show how literary scholars can account for the phenomenon of branding.
Download or read book The Early Enlightenment in the Dutch Republic 1650 1750 written by Wiep van Bunge and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains twelve essays by prominent historians from the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States on the early Enlightenment in the Dutch Republic. In the wake of the increased awareness of the importance of this particular period for the European Enlightenment as a whole, they focus on Cartesianism, Spinozism and Empiricism, the three main schools of thought that made up its philosophical profile. The first part of the book highlights the academic infrastructure of the Dutch Republic and the theological response to the Radical Enlightenment. The second and third parts concentrate on the philosophical and the scientific developments in the Dutch Republic from 1650 to 1750. The final part of this book deals with the international proliferation of the Dutch Radical Enlightenment and with the way in which its main protagonists have been ignored by Dutch historiography. Contributors include: Wiep van Bunge, Andrew Fix, Jonathan Israel, Eric Jorink, Henri Krop, Wijnand Mijnhardt, Han van Ruler, Paul Schuurman, Geert Vanpaemel, Hans de Waardt, Ernestine van der Wall, and Michiel Wielema.

Download or read book A Bookseller s Hobby horse and the Rhetoric of Translation written by Agnes Maria Zwaneveld and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bookseller's Hobby-Horse, and the Rhetoric of Translationis a study of the first Dutch translation of Tristram Shandy(1759-67) as a product of and factor in the reception of Sterne's novel in the Netherlands, and as a specific manifestation of this reception: a derived text based on interpretation of the original. It took sixteen years for this translation to appear. Why was this so? And why did its publication (1776-79) prove unrewarding to the publisher? To answer the first question, Agnes Zwaneveld relates the development of Sterne appreciation in the Netherlands -- from neglect in the 1760s to a literary craze in the 1780s -- to a number of socio-cultural factors, including a growing interest in German literature. This relation with German literature is reflected in the choice of books published by A.E. Munnikhuisen, a Sterne-enthusiast and conscientious publisher, but also an outsider in the book trade, whose audacity led to the commercial failure of his enterprise. A different question tackled in this study is to what extent the translation reflects the original text. Can it be accepted as a faithful rendering, or rather as an adaptation, an imitatioin the classical tradition? To understand what norms the translator, Bernardus Brunius, followed and what effects he can have been aiming at, his work is described in terms of the -- rhetorical -- theory of translation adhered to in his day. To avoid subjectivity in assessing the resemblance between translation and original, the comparison focuses on composition and the use of rhetorical figures as formal aspects which can be easily recognised across the centuries. The textual comparison was limited to the opening chapter of Tristram Shandy, seen as the novel's exordium, in which both author and translator are likely to have made a show of their intentions. Close reading of this chapter resulted in an interpretation of Tristram's authorial performance as inspired by both Quintilian and Longinus.
