Book excerpt: While out surveying with his crew on Yonah Ridge in Lytle County, Henry Davidson has a sublime encounter with a strange ape-like creature who watches him from the shadows, then calmly turns and walks away. Henry contacts a local bigfoot investigator to privately discuss what he saw. But things take a terrifying turn when two people are viciously killed on Yonah Ridge. Strange tracks found at the sight of the first attack seem to confirm eyewitness accounts of a large ape being the attacker. But economically depressed Lytle County does not need any bad publicity to stand in the way of a planned development that promises to bring much needed jobs and tax revenue for the struggling community. Disillusioned by the inaction of local officials, Henry turns to social media to tell the world what has happened and arranges a hunt to go find the creature, ultimately realizing the "monster" they are after is a scared animal, plagued by disease and suffering. In Bigfoot of Yonah Ridge Billy Plant draws on interviews with Bigfoot investigators and published encounters to create a framework for a deeper discussion: that of declining rural communities and the struggle between conservation and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cedar glades are naturally occurring landscapes of the Central South. Geographically this includes northern Alabama and Georgia and parts of Kentucky. Cedar glades are characterized by open areas of thin soils and gravelly limestone surrounded by forests of oak, hickory, winged elm, blue ash, and eastern redcedars. They have captured the attention of ecologists due to the harsh environment to which cedar glades have adapted. In this unique field guide, readers will find themselves transported into the rare and harsh landscape of Tennessee s cedar glades. Loaded with clear photographs and detailed descriptions of over 140 common plants and animals, this guide will help the casual observer discover the delicate beauty of these unique landscapes. In addition this volume includes upland wildflowers commonly found in the Appalachians and along the Cumberland Plateau. The guide also features informative essays covering the history of plants and cedar glade research, helpful diagrams detailing flowers and leaf morphology, and a documentary memoir that allows the reader to share a season in the author s life as well as the wildflowers he found along the way."

Book excerpt: Scottish zoologist IVAN TERRANCE SANDERSON (1911-1973) coined the word cryptozoology and first used it in print in this hard-to-find 1961 work, the story of "hairy hominids" across the planet from the very beginnings of human civilization until the mid 20th century. With its scientific, anthropological approach, this is one of the first books to treat the phenomenon of "Bigfoot" seriously, and introduced a groundbreaking classification system for the spectrum of subhumanoids. "I am happy that a whole new generation of cryptozoologists-in-training will be able to read Ivan T. Sanderson's classic book," says cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction. "This book opened the minds of many to the vastness of the hominoid reports... and spotlighted for people that Bigfoot/Sasquatch research was the next area for exploration in North America." This new edition, complete with the original illustrations and maps, is part of Cosimo's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.

  • Author : Heinz Guderian
  • Publisher : Arms & Armour
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9781854092823
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Achtung Panzer written by Heinz Guderian and published by Arms & Armour. This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Guderian's book argued, quite clearly, how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Book College

  • Author : Andrew Delbanco
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2023-04-18
  • ISBN : 0691246386
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book College written by Andrew Delbanco and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strengths and failures of the American college, and why liberal education still matters As the commercialization of American higher education accelerates, more and more students are coming to college with the narrow aim of obtaining a preprofessional credential. The traditional four-year college experience—an exploratory time for students to discover their passions and test ideas and values with the help of teachers and peers—is in danger of becoming a thing of the past. In College, prominent cultural critic Andrew Delbanco offers a trenchant defense of such an education, and warns that it is becoming a privilege reserved for the relatively rich. In describing what a true college education should be, he demonstrates why making it available to as many young people as possible remains central to America's democratic promise. In a brisk and vivid historical narrative, Delbanco explains how the idea of college arose in the colonial period from the Puritan idea of the gathered church, how it struggled to survive in the nineteenth century in the shadow of the new research universities, and how, in the twentieth century, it slowly opened its doors to women, minorities, and students from low-income families. He describes the unique strengths of America’s colleges in our era of globalization and, while recognizing the growing centrality of science, technology, and vocational subjects in the curriculum, he mounts a vigorous defense of a broadly humanistic education for all. Acknowledging the serious financial, intellectual, and ethical challenges that all colleges face today, Delbanco considers what is at stake in the urgent effort to protect these venerable institutions for future generations.
