Book excerpt: I was once nicknamed by the Daily Lobo, when I ran for the Vice Presidency of the UNM student body on the same ticket as the famous local Homecoming Queen and lesbian, Presidential candidate P.M. "Tuffy Duffy" Ingrassia, as Jeremiah "The Freak" Foley. One of the saving graces of having been a bum hippy, is that although you could get food stamps, free costumes from salvation army and money from student grants and hence, "go to school" for a decade without having to have a full time job or aim, was that you could afford neither a camera or film. As such, there is no such documentation that exists of a rumored, wayward, hitch-hiking, environmental activist, nudist, drug experimenting, psychedelic interior VW bus driving, party going lunatic. Sadly, more recent generations are better documented and hence have no deniability, whereas I have no recollection of any such a vehicle nor does any such proof exist. There is however in existence, a fictional screenplay of such a character that bears no relation to any actual living or dead people and any similarities are coincidental.

Download or read book Troubled Waters written by Patrick Troy and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian cities have traditionally relied for their water on a 'predict-and-provide' philosophy that gives primacy to big engineering solutions. In more recent years privatised water authorities, seeking to maximise consumption and profits, have reinforced the emphasis on increasing supply. Now the cities must cope with the stresses these policies have imposed on the eco-systems from which they harvest water, into which they discharge wastes, and on which they are located. Residents are having to pay more for their water, while the cities themselves are becoming less sustainable. Must we build more dams and desalination plants, or should we be managing the demand for urban water more prudently? This book explores the demand for urban water and how it has changed in response to shifting social mores over the past century. It explains how demand for centralised provision of water might be reshaped to enable the cities to better cope with expected changes in supply as our climate changes. And it discusses the implications of property rights in water for proposals to privatise water services.

Book excerpt: Uneasy Alliance illuminates the recent search in literary studies for a new interface between textual and contextual readings. Written in tribute to G.A.M. Janssens, the twenty-one essays in the volume exemplify a renewed awareness of the paradoxical nature of literary texts both as works of literary art and as documents embedded in and functioning within a writer's life and culture. Together they offer fresh and often interdisciplinary perspectives on twentieth-century American writers of more or less established status (Henry James, Edna St. Vincent Millay, E.E. Cummings, Vladimir Nabokov, Flannery O'Connor, Saul Bellow, Michael Ondaatje, Toni Morrison and Sandra Cisneros) as well as on those who, for reasons of fashion, politics, ideology, or gender, have been unduly neglected (Booth Tarkington, Julia Peterkin, Robert Coates, Martha Gellhorn, Isabella Gardner, Karl Shapiro, the young Jewish-American writers, Julia Alvarez, and writers of popular crime and detective fiction). Exploring the fruitful interactions and uneasy alliance between literature and ethics, film, biography, gender studies, popular culture, avant-garde art, urban studies, anthropology and multicultural studies, together these essays testify to the ongoing pertinence of an approach to literature that is undogmatic, sensitive and sophisticated and that seeks to do justice to the complex interweavings of literature, culture and biography in twentieth-century American writing.

Book Troubled Memory Second Edition

Download or read book Troubled Memory Second Edition written by Lawrence N. Powell and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful book tells the story of Anne Skorecki Levy, a Holocaust survivor who transformed the horrors of her childhood into a passionate mission to defeat the political menace of reputed neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. The first book to connect the prewar and wartime experiences of Jewish survivors to the lives they subsequently made for themselves in the United States, Troubled Memory is also a dramatic testament to how the experiences of survivors as new Americans spurred their willingness to bear witness. Perhaps the only family to survive the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto as a group, the Skoreckis evaded deportation to Treblinka by posing as Aryans. The family eventually made their way to New Orleans, where they became part of a vibrant Jewish community. Lawrence Powell traces their dramatic odyssey and explores the events that eventually triggered Anne Skorecki Levy's brave decision to honor the suffering of the past by confronting the recurring specter of racist hatred.

Book excerpt: Because literature needed to be extended across oceans, over mountaintop heights and/or valley lows by our ancestors, a bridge was assembled to link the messages through poetry to the masses by networking one to another. It interconnected the past to the present and together, the bond operates as a linkage toward the future. Their device was genius and the dialect was sheer brilliance. A bridge over troubled water served our ancestors purpose of preserving the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Book Imparted Wisdom in Troubled Times

Download or read book Imparted Wisdom in Troubled Times written by Pastor Stephen Kyeyune and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written in the form of a devotional. It consists of my minisermons as posted daily on social media. It addresses the tussles we encounter daily. It is good for spiritual maturity, relationships, and wisdom. A devotional journal, compared to a memoir, should have some uplifting qualities and should be inspiring and illuminating. Thats what this book is intended to accomplish. This book will help you discover your purpose for living and hence your divine destiny. What you believe about God defines your life. Losing sight of God causes us to lose who we are really are. The Word is a prism through which we filter our changing self-image. Gods primary goal is to change us so that we can see as He sees. Christ Himself became wisdom from God to us in order for us (the church) to display the multifarious wisdom of God to the whole universe. God may not fix everything broken in your life now, but He is willing to renew your thinking so that you are able to think as He would have you think, desire what He says is best, and do what He calls you to do. This book could be a viable clutch missing at your fingertips, greatly needed in a culture in which post-truth is the word of the yearI mean todays culture where people are economical with the truth, where people sweeten it or tell the truth improved.

Download or read book The Restless Cell written by Christina Hueschen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential introduction to the physics of active matter and its application to questions in biology In recent decades, the theory of active matter has emerged as a powerful tool for exploring the differences between living and nonliving states of matter. The Restless Cell provides a self-contained, quantitative description of how the continuum theory of matter has been generalized to account for the complex and sometimes counterintuitive behaviors of living materials. Christina Hueschen and Rob Phillips begin by illustrating how classical field theory has been used by physicists to describe the transport of matter by diffusion, the elastic deformations of solids, and the flow of fluids. Drawing on physical insights from the study of diffusion, they introduce readers to the continuum theory protocol—a step-by-step framework for developing equations that describe matter as a continuum—and show how these methods and concepts can be generalized to the study of living, energy-consuming matter. Hueschen and Phillips then present a range of engaging biological case studies across scales, such as the symmetry breaking that occurs in developing embryos, the perpetual flows that take place in giant algal cells, and the herding of wildebeest on the plains of the Serengeti. An essential resource for students and researchers in biological physics and quantitative biology, The Restless Cell gives complete derivations of all calculations and features illustrations by Nigel Orme that seamlessly bridge conceptual models and continuum descriptions of living matter.
