Book Forgive Us Our Debts

Download or read book Forgive Us Our Debts written by Andrew L. Yarrow and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this immensely timely book, Andrew Yarrow brings the sometimes eye-glazing discussion of national debt down to earth, explaining in accessible terms why federal debt is rising (and will soon rise much faster), what effects it may have on Americans if debt is not brought under control, why our government borrows, and what it will take to pay it all back. The picture Yarrow paints should concern all Americans. Specifically, he brings to light how rising Medicare, Social Security, and other spending on one hand, and insufficient government revenues on the other, make a mockery of fiscal responsibility. Deficits and debt, Yarrow asserts, are crowding out spending on needed investments in science, environment, infrastructure, and other domestic discretionary programs and could severely harm our nations and our citizens future. But he makes clear that this does not have to be a doomsday scenario. If we act in a bipartisan fashion to restore fiscal health, our legacy to the next generation can be much more than trillions of dollars of IOUs.

Book Poverty Amidst Plenty

Download or read book Poverty Amidst Plenty written by Edward Weisband and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Weisband's pioneering text is destined to transform the current teaching of world political economy at both the introductory and the advanced level. Outlining the moral principles and ethical concepts fundamental to grasping the human significance of poverty, he clearly reveals what is often hinted at but rarely stated–that the political dimensions of poverty and distributive justice constitute the organizing framework of the study of world political economy. Against a backdrop of readings, Professor Weisband's insightful, interpretative essays generate an interdisciplinary discussion, a synthesis of theoretical perspectives and value orientations, providing students with a critical comprehension of the complex workings of the world economy. The essays link basic approaches to world politics and international relations, international law and organization, international sociology, development studies, and moral philosophy to give texture to such basic theories as modes of production, dependency, world systems, unequal exchange, the labor theory of value, free-trade liberalism, neomercantilism, Marxism, and neo-Marxism. Alternative value orientations are also explored, including realist and neo-realist, conservative and liberal, egalitarian and cosmopolitan, radical and materialist. Poverty Amidst Plenty combines theory and analysis with historical and normative perspectives to offer students a relevant, prescriptive, and most of all, human picture of the far-reaching system that governs much of our lives.

  • Author : Ivan Krastev
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2020-01-10
  • ISBN : 081225242X
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book After Europe written by Ivan Krastev and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, renowned public intellectual Ivan Krastev reflects on the future of the European Union—and its potential lack of a future. With far-right nationalist parties on the rise across the continent and the United Kingdom planning for Brexit, the European Union is in disarray and plagued by doubts as never before. Krastev includes chapters devoted to Europe's major problems (especially the political destabilization sparked by the more than 1.3 million migrants from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia), the spread of right-wing populism (taking into account the election of Donald Trump in the United States), and the thorny issues facing member states on the eastern flank of the EU (including the threat posed by Vladimir Putin's Russia). In a new afterword written in the wake of the 2019 EU parliamentary elections, Krastev concludes that although the union is as fragile as ever, its chances of enduring are much better than they were just a few years ago.

Book Struggling Amidst Plenty

Download or read book Struggling Amidst Plenty written by Subir Grewal and published by Subir Grewal. This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Subir Grewal We can’t solve our economic problems until we venture upstream, where few go, to discover what the true problem is. Many people out there can sense something is deeply wrong with our system of money and finance, and that the effects of it are far-reaching. However, most also don’t know the full scope of it, and how to put it all into words, so we can diagnose the root cause and then set out to fix it. That’s where this book comes in. · Written by a financial industry veteran, C.P.A., and reformed owner of a degree in economics, who can’t bear to silently watch this flawed, outdated, and yet obscure system of money & finance crush humanity. · We go behind the curtain in monetary economics, with simple explanations in layperson’s terms on topics often thought to be complex. No background in economics is required. From this, the reader will gain financial and monetary literacy on the pressing problems of today, why the status quo in economics is unable to solve them, and what needs to change. · This is THE book on inequality and what drives it. We demystify the entire monetary/financial system, show how it’s rooted in arbitrary special privilege, and explain the math of how it systematically creates a society with major inequality. · Puts forth a comprehensive solution, fit for modern times, that could help solve inequality, high debt, and “too big to fail” all at once. These ideas come from actual economists with PhDs; the author is just a translator for the layperson. (The solution is not a gold standard, Bitcoin, or more government borrowing, either.) We’ll also get into why this solution has been systematically suppressed, and why it will be tough for economists alone to solve these problems for us. · This book is non-partisan and not married to any “ism.” You’ll see how many prominent people on BOTH the “Left” and “Right” have supported the solutions proposed. · You can download it for free. Payment is voluntary and suggested at $5.00 (it can be more/less.) No strings attached, no future e-mails. This is just about getting vital information out there.

Book Once a Warrior

Download or read book Once a Warrior written by Jake Wood and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book that America needs right now." --Tom Brokaw, journalist and author of The Greatest Generation "Jake Wood offers one of the most soaring definitions of service I've ever seen." --Maria Shriver, award-winning journalist and author of I've Been Thinking From Marine sniper Jake Wood, a riveting memoir of leading over 100,000 veterans to a life of renewed service, volunteering to battle, hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, pandemics, and civil wars, and inspiring onlookers as their unique military training saved lives and rebuilt our country. When Jake Wood arrived in the States after two grueling tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he watched his unit lose more men to suicide than to enemy hands overseas. Reeling, Jake looked for a way to direct their restlessness towards a new mission--and put their formidable skills to good use. When an earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, Jake had his answer. He convinced several fellow veterans to join him on a ragtag mission to provide desperately needed aid. Despite the high stakes, they were able to untangle complex problems quickly and keep calm under pressure. In this raw, adrenaline-filled narrative, Jake recounts, how, over the past 10 years, he's built the disaster response organization Team Rubicon, and seen the work provide a lifeline back to purpose for the heroes among us. Not only do these intrepid volunteers race against the clock to aid communities after Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Harvey, COVID-19, and hundreds of other disasters; they also fight for something just as important--each other. Once a Warrior provides a soaring look at what our veterans are capable of--and what might become of America's next greatest generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ray Dalio, the legendary investor and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Principles—whose books have sold more than five million copies worldwide—shares his unique template for how debt crises work and principles for dealing with them well. This template allowed his firm, Bridgewater Associates, to anticipate 2008’s events and navigate them well while others struggled badly. As he explained in his #1 New York Times bestseller Principles, Ray Dalio believes that most everything happens over and over again through time so that by studying patterns one can understand the cause-effect relationships behind events and develop principles for dealing with them well. In this three-part research series, he does just that for big debt crises and shares his template in the hopes of reducing the chances of big debt crises happening and helping them be better managed in the future. The template comes in three parts: 1. The Archetypal Big Debt Cycle (which explains the template) 2. Three Detailed Cases (which examines in depth the 2008 financial crisis, the 1930s Great Depression, and the 1920s inflationary depression of Germany’s Weimar Republic) 3. Compendium of 48 Cases (which is a compendium of charts and brief descriptions of the worst debt crises of the last 100 years) Whether you’re an investor, a policy maker, or are simply interested in debt, this unconventional perspective from one of the few people who navigated the crisis successfully, Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises will help you understand the economy and markets in revealing new ways.
