Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . includes biographies of 116 people whom the authors considered `historically most significant' from post-World War II to the present. Its introduction is an excellent review of significant happenings in U.S. business. The rise of automobile manufacturing, which spawned service stations that resulted in customized auto repair shops, is one example used to depict the evolution of U.S. industry. . . . This is an important purchase for any public, academic, or corporate library that has a clientele interested in current U.S. business. Reference Books Bulletin This work contains 116 biographies of American business leaders since World War II. Because many of these are multiple biographies, the dictionary covers more than 150 individual business leaders. The book features full-scale biographies, running several pages in length, on leaders who were chosen specifically to illustrate major American business trends from 1945 to the present. A detailed introductory essay places these business leaders within the context of the most important business trends of the time, providing the reader with an in-depth, incisive view of the evolution of American business during a period of critical transformation. The dictionary also includes a number of female and black business leaders, thereby charting their contributions to American business during a time when the civil rights crusade and the drive for women's rights opened up increasing opportunities for those groups. Each biography in this collection is followed by a detailed bibliography. The backmatter includes a number of appendices that allow the reader to pursue biographies of business leaders according to industry, company, location of business operations, and birthplace, along with listings of black and women business leaders. This volume would make a valuable addition to any university or public library collection, and it would be of great use to anyone interested in business history or management.

Book Big Business

Download or read book Big Business written by Tyler Cowen and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An against-the-grain polemic on American capitalism from New York Times bestselling author Tyler Cowen. We love to hate the 800-pound gorilla. Walmart and Amazon destroy communities and small businesses. Facebook turns us into addicts while putting our personal data at risk. From skeptical politicians like Bernie Sanders who, at a 2016 presidential campaign rally said, “If a bank is too big to fail, it is too big to exist,” to millennials, only 42 percent of whom support capitalism, belief in big business is at an all-time low. But are big companies inherently evil? If business is so bad, why does it remain so integral to the basic functioning of America? Economist and bestselling author Tyler Cowen says our biggest problem is that we don’t love business enough. In Big Business, Cowen puts forth an impassioned defense of corporations and their essential role in a balanced, productive, and progressive society. He dismantles common misconceptions and untangles conflicting intuitions. According to a 2016 Gallup survey, only 12 percent of Americans trust big business “quite a lot,” and only 6 percent trust it “a great deal.” Yet Americans as a group are remarkably willing to trust businesses, whether in the form of buying a new phone on the day of its release or simply showing up to work in the expectation they will be paid. Cowen illuminates the crucial role businesses play in spurring innovation, rewarding talent and hard work, and creating the bounty on which we’ve all come to depend.

Book Philanthropy of American Business Leaders 1910 1932

Download or read book Philanthropy of American Business Leaders 1910 1932 written by Aristides Scoufelis and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public views and record of philanthropy of a convenience and judgment sample of fifty-eight American big business leaders were weighed against both "Robber Baron" and "Industrial Statesman" interpretations of entrepreneurship to test the revisionist "Industrial Statesman" hypothesis that the views and dona- tions of a purposive sample of America's business leaders for the period 1910 to 1932 demonstrated positive contributions to our nation's learning, culture, and human welfare. In this manner the philosophy of public service emerged as a prominent moving force explaining the philanthropy of American business leaders, re- sulting from an ethical, humanitarian morality which championed the role of education in a democratic society, and the preservation of American civiliza- tion. Thoughtful motives similarly prompted generous giving, as evidenced in libraries, museums, the theater, and art galleries, while additionally providing or enriching those facilities that have enhanced the country's health, research, technology, and leisure-time activities.

Book The Public Image of Big Business in America 1880 1940

Download or read book The Public Image of Big Business in America 1880 1940 written by Louis Galambos and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otiginally published in 1975. At the time that Louis Galambos published The Public Image of Big Business in America in 1975, America had matured into a bureaucratic state. The expression of the military-industrial complex and big business grew so pervasive that the postwar United States was defined in large part by its citizens' participation in large-scale organizational structures. Noticing this development, Galambos maintains that the "single most significant phenomenon in modern American history is the emergence of giant, complex organizations." Today, bureaucratic organizations influence the day-to-day lives of most Americans—they gather taxes, regulate businesses, provide services, administer welfare, provide education, and on and on. These organizations are defined by their hierarchical structure in which the power of decision-making is allotted according to abstract rules that create impersonal scenarios. Bureaucracies have developed as a result of technological changes in the second half of the nineteenth century. Based on the premise that these structures had a stronger influence on modern America than any other single phenomenon, this book explores the public's response to the growth of the power and influence of bureaucracy from the years 1880 through 1930. What results is an examination of the social perception of bureaucracy and the development of bureaucratic culture.

Book The 5 Big Lies About American Business

Download or read book The 5 Big Lies About American Business written by Michael Medved and published by Forum Books. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHY FEEL EMBARRASSED BY BUSINESS? Every American benefits every day from the phenomenal productivity of the free market, so why do so many people feel guilty or skeptical about our business system? In this passionately argued, eye-opening book, talk-radio star and bestselling author Michael Medved provides detailed and devastating rebuttals to the most widely circulated smears against capitalism. MYTH: Big business is bad, small business is good. TRUTH: Every big business began life as a small business, and every small business today yearns for enough success to become a big business tomorrow. For some products—like cars or electrical power—little companies can’t benefit their workers or customers as reliably as huge corporations. MYTH: Business executives are overpaid and corrupt. TRUTH: Top leaders will always command top dollar, and a company can’t limit executive pay without limiting its access to talent. Ferocious, long-term competition in the corporate world ultimately rewards focus and hard work, not short cuts and corruption. MYTH: You can count on better treatment from the government than from business. TRUTH: If a private company deals with you poorly, you can take your business elsewhere. But with the government’s power, you get only two choices: compliance or jail. Medved responds to business-bashing lies with the slashing wit, irrefutable facts, fascinating historical nuggets, illuminating anecdotes, and liberating clarity that made him one of the top-ten talk-radio hosts in the United States. This audacious and urgently needed book provides energy and inspiration for a beleaguered free-market system poised for its unstoppable comeback.
