Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Big Business and Radio The author has been especially fortunate in the splendid cooperation that he has enjoyed during the preparation of the text of this volume. He has been aided not only by those who assisted him with data for the first volume in this series, History of Radio to 1926 - but also by many other individuals now or formerly connected with the great industry that forms the subject matter of this text. To David Sarnoff, president of the Radio Corporation of America, is no doubt due chief credit for the widespread assistance previously mentioned. The natural reluctance of leaders of great industrial enterprises to open their files to any historian, however well intentioned, is a fact to be reckoned with. Busy officials, moreover, have little time for conferences concerning past events, yet the author bears grateful testimony to the fact that all down the line, radio officials, high and low, have rendered most courteous and prompt assistance. Lewis MacConnach, secretary both to the Radio Corporation of America and the National Broadcasting Company, has naturally encountered somewhat more than the traditional lion's share of requests for information. To his credit be it recorded that, however engrossed by the duties of his busy office he may have been at the time, he has nevertheless invariably responded promptly and fully to all such requests. Elmer E. Bucher has rendered invaluable assistance in locating source material. George H. Clark, of RCA, has also been most helpful. Mark J. Woods, treasurer of the National Broadcasting Company, and O. B. Hanson, vice-president of the same organization, have each aided the author greatly. At the General Electric Company, Miss Lillian V. Morrison and Miss Gertrude Chandler in the office of Owen D. Young have supplied extremely helpful data. Miss Frances Sprague, librarian of the general library of the National Broadcasting Company, and Miss Doris Crooker, librarian of another department of the same corporation, have each rendered highly appreciated aid in locating source material. At the Columbia Broadcasting System all officials from President Paley down have responded generously and graciously. At the offices of the Mutual Network the same spirit of helpfulness has been displayed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Master Switch

Download or read book The Master Switch written by Tim Wu and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Yorker and Fortune Best Book of the Year "A must-read for all Americans who want to remain the ones deciding what they can read, watch, and listen to.” —Arianna Huffington Analyzing the strategic maneuvers of today’s great information powers—Apple, Google, and an eerily resurgent AT&T—Tim Wu uncovers a time-honored pattern in which invention begets industry and industry begets empire. It is easy to forget that every development in the history of the American information industry—from the telephone to radio to film—once existed in an open and chaotic marketplace inhabited by entrepreneurs and utopians, just as the Internet does today. Each of these, however, grew to be dominated by a monopolist or cartel. In this pathbreaking book, Tim Wu asks: will the Internet follow the same fate? Could the Web—the entire flow of American information—come to be ruled by a corporate leviathan in possession of "the master switch"? Here, Tim Wu shows how a battle royale for the Internet’s future is brewing, and this is one war we dare not tune out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organizing for Increased Business Several years ago the company marketed its entire product in five neighboring states. Each year the total volume of business indicated a normal, natural increase. This increase was due largely to the rapid growth and development of the selling territory and the fact that the goods produced were favorably known to the trade for their uniform quality and dependability. The time came, however, when a thorough probe of the marketing field proved conclusively that the amount of additional business possible in this territory was limited. Not only had its first rapid growth settled down to a normal, healthy increase of population, but investigation proved that the merchandising methods of the retailers, as well as the marketing methods of manufacturers supplying this field, were entirely demoralized. A summary of the investigation of the marketing methods of manufacturers and the merchandising prao tice of retailers in this market brought forth the following facts which were significant.
