Download or read book Big Box USA written by Bart Elmore and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Box USA presents a new look at how the big box retail store has dramatically reshaped the US economy and its ecosystems in the last half century. From the rural South to the frigid North, from inside stores to ecologies far beyond, this book examines the relationships that make up one of the most visible features of late twentieth-century and early twenty-first-century American life. The rise of big box retail since the 1960s has transformed environments on both local and global scales. Almost everyone has explored the aisles of big box stores. The allure of “everyday low prices” and brightly colored products of every kind connect shoppers with a global marketplace. Contributors join a growing conversation between business and environmental history, addressing the ways American retail institutions have affected physical and cultural ecologies around the world. Essays on Walmart, Target, Cabela’s, REI, and Bass Pro Shops assess the “bigness” of these superstores from “smokestacks to coat racks” and contend that their ecological impacts are not limited to the footprints of parking lots and manufacturing but also play a didactic role in educating consumers about their relationships with the environment. A model for historians seeking to bring business and environmental histories together in their analyses of merchant capital’s role in the landscapes of everyday life and how it has remade human relationships with nature, Big Box USA is a must-read for students and scholars of the environment, business, sustainability, retail professionals, and a general audience.

Download or read book Fort Worth between the World Wars written by Harold Rich and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early days as a nineteenth-century army outpost through the boom years of cattle drives, culminating with the arrival of Armour and Swift in the twentieth century to secure the community’s economic base, Fort Worth established itself as a major city that, to many, was “where the West began.” Historian Harold Rich focuses on the successes and struggles that Fort Worth enjoyed and endured in the 1920s and 1930s as the city’s fortunes began to be eclipsed by Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Featuring a solid foundation of economic history, Rich also explores the political and social challenges of a big city facing an uncertain future. Tense race relations, the chilling rise of the Ku Klux Klan, and the dangerous thrills of a notorious vice district— “Hell’s Half-Acre”—show that this Texas city was a microcosm of the state and the nation when the roar of the 1920s came to an abrupt halt in the Great Depression. Fort Worth between the World Wars is an important contribution not only to local history but also to the larger story of urban change during a tumultuous time.

Download or read book Street Commerce written by Andres Sevtsuk and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the issues involved in planning for and facilitating successful street commerce Street commerce has gained prominence in urban areas, where demographic shifts such as increasing numbers of single people and childless "empty nesters," along with technological innovations enabling greater flexibility of work locations and hours, have changed how people shop and dine out. Contemporary city dwellers are demanding smaller-scale stores located in public spaces that are accessible on foot or by public transit. At the same time, the emergence of online retail undermines both the dominance and viability of big-box discount businesses and drives brick and mortar stores to focus as much on the experience of shopping as on the goods and services sold. Meanwhile, in many developing countries, the bulk of urban retail activity continues to take place on the street, even as new car-oriented shopping centers are on the rise. In light of such trends, street commerce will play an important role in twenty-first-century cities, particularly in producing far-reaching benefits for the environment and local communities. Although street commerce is deeply intertwined with myriad contemporary urban visions and planning goals—walkability, quality of life, inclusion, equity, and economic resilience—it has rarely been the focus of systematic research and informed practice. In Street Commerce, Andres Sevtsuk presents a comprehensive analysis of the issues involved in implementing successful street commerce. Drawing on economic theory, urban design principles, regulatory policies, and merchant organization models, he conceptualizes key problems and offers innovative solutions. He provides a range of examples from around the world to detail how different cities and communities have bolstered and reinvigorated their street commerce. According to Sevtsuk, successful street commerce can only be achieved when the private sector, urban policy makers, planners, and the public are equipped with the relevant knowledge and tools to plan and regulate it.

Download or read book The Price of a Bargain written by Gordon Laird and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Laird traces the bargain – that touchstone of American culture – from its humble dollar-store origins to its recent role as global juggernaut. Along the way, he discovers that much of today's collapsing consumer economy is dangerously dependant upon unsustainable labor, transport, resources, trade imbalances, and consumer debt. Through interviews with everyone from box store executives to illegal immigrants, a single question emerges: Is the Wal-Mart culture sustainable on a global level? From Asia's factory borderlands to rural Mexico, from Las Vegas to the Arctic Circle, Laird explores the hidden revolution of discounting, and the promise and consequence of everyday low prices.
