Book Raffaello Borghini s Il Riposo

Download or read book Raffaello Borghini s Il Riposo written by Raffaello Borghini and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raffaello Borghini's Il Riposo (1584) is the most widely known Florentine document on the subject of the Counter-Reformation content of religious paintings. Despite its reputation as an art-historical text, this is the first English-language translation of Il Riposo to be published. A distillation of the art gossip that was a feature of the Medici Grand Ducal court, Borghini's treatise puts forth simple criteria for judging the quality of a work of art. Published sixteen years after the second edition of Giorgio Vasari's Vite, the text that set the standard for art-historical writing during the period, Il Riposo focuses on important issues that Vasari avoided, ignored, or was oblivious to. Picking up where Vasari left off, Borghini deals with artists who came after Michaelangelo and provides more comprehensive descriptions of artists who Vasari only touched upon such as Tintoretto, Veronese, Barocci, and the artists of Francesco I's Studiolo. This text is also invaluable as a description of the mid-sixteenth century reaction against the style of the 'maniera,' which stressed the representation of self-consciously convoluted figures in complicated works of art. The first art treatise specifically directed toward non-practitioners, Il Riposo gives unique insight into the early stages of art history as a discipline, late Renaissance art and theory, and the Counter-Reformation in Italy.

Book excerpt: Six years ago I met a young colored man, a college student recently returned from Germany where he had been engaged in graduate work. He was born, he told me, in one of the Gulf States, and I questioned him as to whether he intended going back to the South to teach. His answer was in the negative. "My father has attained success in his native state," he said, "but when I ceased to be a boy, he advised me to live in the North where my manhood would be respected. He himself cannot continually endure the position in which he is placed, and in the summer he comes North to be a man. No," correcting himself, "to be half a man. A Negro is wholly a man only in Europe. Half a man! During the six years that I have been in touch with the problem of the Negro in New York this characterization has grown in significance to me. I have endeavored to know the life of the Negro as I know the life of the white American, and I have learned that while New York at times gives full recognition to his manhood, again, its race prejudice arrests his development as certainly as severe poverty arrests the development of the tenement child. Perhaps a study of this shifting attitude on the part of the dominant race, and of the Negro's reaction under it, may not be unimportant; for the color question cannot be ignored in America, nor should the position taken by her largest city be overlooked.

Book excerpt: This hurts so much! Where is God? Why doesn't He stop it? When author Pauline Trama's eldest son died, it took her months to find her way out of depression. Two years later, she was faced with yet another daunting challenge when she witnessed a harrowing boating accident that her husband, middle son and foster-sons thankfully survived. Knowing that the stories of her trials and triumphs over adversity could be helpful to others, Mrs. Trama shares her unique yet emotionally universal experience in the engaging, heartfelt pages of Hindsight. Beginning with the author's teenage years, up until the present, her journey is documented with sensitivity and insight. Her strong belief is that God has used these life challenges not just to help her grow in strength and faith, but to provide hope, support and healing to others who are struggling through their own trying situations.

Book We are Australian Vol 1 Colour Edition

Download or read book We are Australian Vol 1 Colour Edition written by Rina Robinson and published by Linda Ruth Brooks. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know us. We are your cousin Alice, who tells the story of Nanna's funeral; how all the cars followed Uncle George in the wrong direction, while a priest stood by the grave, waiting to conduct the burial. We are your dad, who you visit on warm summer nights, and he talks about the old days; when he met mum; when he worked in the cane fields. We are the migrant family next door, who laugh till they cry, telling of how, when they arrived in the fifties, they went to the milk bar for a gelati. The owner kept saying "Gilleti" and offering them razor blades. We are the Vietnamese mother who tells you one day how she came to Australia. She quietly talks of three weeks at sea in a small boat, crammed in with twenty others, knees to chest, cold, wet and hungry. We are anyone who has lived in Australia since the 1930s. Often, our stories will be your stories; but some will be strange, different; some will be funny and others will bring tears. We are the story tellers who started with memories that turned into stories. We wrote them down, and learned the frustration when the words wouldn't come; and experienced that magical moment when the words took over, and the story wrote itself. We became authors. Now here we are. These are our stories; our country's living history, by the best historians of all - those who lived it. John McBride (2010)

Book excerpt: Life is perfect for Julie Waters -- great husband, gorgeous hundred-year-old brick manse perched upon a broad precipice overlooking the open Atlantic off Cohasset, Massachusetts, friends, family ... and then she gets pregnant. Great husband Ken descends into a constant state of fretfulness, slugging down single malt Scotch and pacing about the manse that he and his first wife Regina restored just before the plane crash that took her and their only child Katrina. He sees Julie as Regina and all the sorrow that she wreaked upon him lives again. Beloved Katrina calls to him and he steps off the broad precipice to build sandcastles with her on the beach below, but Julie snags his shirt. Bouncing off the rocky outcrop, he clutches a candy-colored clown that glows worse than the great flames masticating the manse. That's only the beginning. One person knows Katrina is still alive while family secrets and a candy-colored clown endanger mankind. Emotions run high as love and determination lead Ken and Julie to a terrorist training camp for children and Katrina.
