Book excerpt: At the heart of this fictional work of survival is one of the most spectacular life cycles on earth, that of Danaus plexipus or the Monarch Butterfly. As this iconic insect’s annual migration dances to the tune played by the weather, so does the North American plot alternate between the mountains of Central Mexico and rural Eastern Ontario, Canada. Two families, the Santanas and the Desjardins are brought together by their love of this tiny creature. Over the twelve months from November 2010 to November 2011, the monarchs migrate between their two countries, just as they have for millennia. More than ever, they have become a beacon of hope for all that is beautiful and fragile in our world. Like the “canary in a coal mine”, the monarchs hover between survival and extinction. Threatened by extreme weather, deforestation, and the degradation of their food sources, these environmental concerns make up the fabric of this book. Other threads in the story are the technologies that invade our privacy under the guise of public safety and security. Since Rachel Carson’s "Silent Spring", the unbridled greed and avarice of immense international agrochemical companies continue. Bent on leaving our world a toxic wasteland with all the attendant diseases, cancer strikes down the story’s young protagonist, Anne Desjardins. Gone are her carefree and pastoral days of hayrides, bird’s nests and clear blue skies. It will take more than just a medical breakthrough to deliver her from her health crucible and “slip the surly bonds of earth”. In order for Anne to survive, it will take the far more powerful forces of courage, friendship, and love to turn the tide and help to bring this tale to its hopeful conclusion. As the story ends, two young lovers share their first kiss under the Mexican stars.

Book Canada Looks South

Download or read book Canada Looks South written by Peter McKenna and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events in the western hemisphere have led to a dramatic shift in the strategic and political importance of Latin America. But with relations still cool between the United States and Cuba, and Venezuela becoming more distant every day, there is considerable potential for Canada – with its longstanding commitment to constructive engagement – to forge mutually beneficial relations with these nations as well as rising industrial and economic players such as Mexico and Brazil. In Canada Looks South, experts on foreign policy in Canada and Central America provide a timely exploration of Canada’s growing role in the Americas and the most pressing issues of the region. Starting with the historical scope of the bilateral relationship, the volume goes on to cover such subjects as trade engagement, democratization, and security. As current and future Canadian governments embrace expanding linkages with this region, this collection fills a significant gap in scholarship on Canadian-Latin American relations.

Book Ready to Come About

Download or read book Ready to Come About written by Sue Williams and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2019-05-18 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three hundred nautical miles from shore, I‘m cold and sick and afraid. I pray for reprieve. I long for solid ground. And I can‘t help but ask myself, What the hell was I thinking? When Sue Williams set sail for the North Atlantic, it wasn’t a mid-life crisis. She had no affinity for the sea. And she didn’t have an adventure-seeking bone in her body. In the wake of a perfect storm of personal events, it suddenly became clear: her sons were adults now; they needed freedom to figure things out for themselves; she had to get out of their way. And it was now or never for her husband, David, to realize his dream to cross an ocean. So she’d go too. Ready to Come About is the story of a mother’s improbable adventure on the high seas and her profound journey within, through which she grew to believe that there is no gift more precious than the liberty to chart one’s own course, and that risk is a good thing ... sometimes, at least.

Book Tracing Chains of Thought

Download or read book Tracing Chains of Thought written by Benjoe A. Juliano and published by Physica. This book was released on 1996-04-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We always seem to be comparing various conceptual structures in many of our higher mental activities. In any case, we use similarities and discrepancies in forming all our conceptual categories. In this book, the authors present a computerized approach to diagnosis: in particular, cognitive diagnosis. It uses fuzzy graph structures called fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs). These are used in an attempt to model the intriacies of the higher mental processes. The area of structure comparison, focusing on measures of similarity and discrepancy, is also dealt with. A very interesting aspect of the book is how the authors approached the problem of cognitive diagnosis using fuzzy techniques. Some connections and differences from other approaches are also covered. The reader will find this book both informative and interesting.

Book Rollercoaster

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Bartleman
  • Publisher : Douglas Gibson Books
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 077101094X
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Rollercoaster written by James Bartleman and published by Douglas Gibson Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four years, James Bartleman mixed with all the biggest names – Clinton, Blair, Yeltsin, Mitterrand, Castro, Kohl, Chirac, and on and on, as Chrétien’s Henry Kissinger figure. He was involved in deadly serious crisis management, accompanying Chrétien to all the world’s hot spots – dodging bullets in Sarajevo, and trying to avoid war in the Spanish trawler incident. Not to mention dealing with Premier Li of China on an official visit encountering protestors in Montreal and shouting, “I am departing immediately. Never have I and my country been so humiliated.” Which leader at the G7 Summit in Halifax passed out drunk in the hotel elevator? What did Jean Chrétien do to set White House aides threatening, “the next time there’s a referendum, we will support the separatists”? And why did Fidel Castro grab our author, shaking him and snarling, “I hope you are satisfied, Bartleman”? It’s all in this lively book. Every major world crisis of these years is represented here, and every region of the world. You’ll be amazed at how widely Chrétien and Bartleman travelled and how much top-level action they experienced. Canadian foreign policy has never seemed so exciting. Or so funny (as when the angry Japanese prime minister’s Ottawa visit was marred by a health problem officially described as “soft poo”). A candid, witty, eye-opening book about foreign affairs at the top.
