There are some who call anything, which did not exist during the time of the Prophet (pbuh), bid'ah and label those who adopt some of those practices as people of innovation (bid'ah) or misguidance (dalaalah). The question that must be asked is: "How have the Muslims been dealing with newly introduced matters starting from the time of the Companions until recent times?" In order to provide an encompassing answer to this question, I gathered the views of the four schools of thought in this booklet (Hanbali, Shafii, Maliki and Hanafi madhhabs). From each Madhab, I include statements of some of the famous scholars regarding the meaning and classification of bid'ah (innovation). Henceforth, I include the magnificent research concerning bid'ah of one of the greatest scholars of 19th century: Al-Imaam Abu Al-Hasaanat Muhammed Abdulhayy Al-Laknawi Al-Hindi. In his research he demonstrated how the first three blessed generations responded to the newly innovated matters which cropped up during their time. He concludes his research by providing advice on how we should deal with bid'ah in our own time. I believe his advice contains therein a cure for the disease of corrupting the term bid'ah, perhaps inadvertently, to divide the Muslim community.

Book excerpt: In the early centuries of Islam the response of Muslims to problem-solving the various issues and challenges that faced their rapidly expanding community was to use intelligence and independent reasoning based on the Qur’an and Sunnah to address them. This practice is known as ijtihad. As the centuries wore on however the gates of ijtihad were generally closed in favor of following existing rulings developed by scholars by way of analogy. And as reason and intellect, now held captive to madhhabs (schools of thought) and earlier scholarly opinion stagnated, so did the Muslim world. Ijtihad and Renewal is an analysis of ijtihad and the role it can play for a positive Muslim revival in the modern world, a revival based on society-wide economic and educational reform and development. It makes the case that the grafting of solutions rooted in the past onto the complex and unique realities of our own age, in a one-size-fits-all perspective, has paralysed the vitality of Muslim thought, and confused its sense of direction, and that to revive the Muslim world from its centuries of decline and slumber we need to revive the practice of ijtihad. And this is (by realizing) that you are in a time between two times which is (what constitutes) your life, and this is the present time which is between what has passed and what is yet to come. Then that which has passed, you can correct by repentance, remorse and seeking forgiveness. This is something in which there will be no tiredness, fatigue, or any straining efforts (required on your behalf). It is (nothing but) the action of the heart ... And there is due from the servant to Allah, in every moment from his time, servitude which will advance him or bring him nearer to Allah. So if he spends his time in servitude to Allah, he will advance to His Lord and if he busies himself with desires, or relaxation or inactivity, he will lag behind. And the servant never ceases either to be moving forward or falling behind, and there is no stopping whilst on the path, ever." Every harm that enters upon a servant, is caused by the heart's corruption. The corruption of the heart in turn brings about the removal of the heart's right upon Allah, the Exalted, and a diminution of its degree and rank in the sight of Allah.
