Download or read book The Romance of the Rose Illuminated written by Alcuin Blamires and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reproduces in colour, with commentary and full contextual discussion, all the miniatures from unpublished illuminated manuscripts of Le Roman de la Rose in the National Library of Wales. A central work in medieval culture, the Rose was among the most consistently illustrated of medieval secular texts. By presenting all the illuminations from all five illuminated Aberystwyth manuscripts the present study enables absorbing comparisons to be made. This is a book that will stir controversy through its scepticism about moral readings of Rose illustrations and through its insistence on an "accidental" element in the interpretative value of miniatures in secular texts. It will interest anyone who studies art and literature, including students of Chaucer - a poet who absorbed the Roman de la Rose to the core by translating it. The reader is first introduced to the narrative and to characteristic sites of illustration within it. The introduction goes on to identify existing published sources of reproductions, and then to argue the crucial role that a grasp of the practical circumstances of production should play in interpreting medieval miniatures. A final complementary chapter formally describes all seven Aberystwyth Rose manuscripts.

Download or read book The Street of Crocodiles written by Bruno Schulz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1977 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Street of Crocodiles in the Polish city of Drogobych is a street of memories and dreams where recollections of Bruno Schulz's uncommon boyhood and of the eerie side of his merchant family's life are evoked in a startling blend of the real and the fantastic. Most memorable - and most chilling - is the portrait of the author's father, a maddened shopkeeper who imports rare birds' eggs to hatch in his attic, who believes tailors' dummies should be treated like people, and whose obsessive fear of cockroaches causes him to resemble one. Bruno Schulz, a Polish Jew killed by the Nazis in 1942, is considered by many to have been the leading Polish writer between the two world wars.

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Junius Spencer Morgan Collection of Virgil in the Princeton University Library written by Craig Kallendorf and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Junius Spencer Morgan collection at Princeton University consists of over 700 titles (totaling around 900 volumes) of editions of the Roman poet Virgil (70-19 BC), in Latin and in various vernacular languages. Technically the collection includes items ranging from the first printed edition (Rome, 1469) to the present, but the focus is strongly on material published in the early modern period. This collection was formed by Junius Spencer Morgan, the nephew of the financier J. P. Morgan. Morgan's interest in Virgil was undoubtedly encouraged during his student days at Princeton and reflects his efforts to obtain the best copies he could find of items noteworthy for their scholarship, their illustrations, or their place in publishing history. The result is one of the largest collections of early printed editions of Virgil in the world, a collection whose balance and integrity make it the proper beginning place for research in this field. Given Virgil's central place in western education during the early centuries of printing, the catalogue of the Morgan collection should be of interest to art historians, cultural historians, and historians of education as well as classicists and specialists in printing history and the history of the book. This handsomely-produced volume includes close to fifty full-page color illustrations from the collection.

Writing in a lively, accessible style, Jonathan Hill takes us on an enlightening journey from the first to the twenty first centuries. He shows us the key Christian thinkers through the ages - ranging from Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine and Aquinas through to Luther, Wesley, Kierkegaard and Barth - placing them in their historical context and assessing their contribution to the development of Christianity.
