Book Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania Vol 1

Download or read book Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania Vol 1 written by Historical Society of Pennsylvania and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1: Being a Republication The Historical Society of Pennsylvania commences the publication of its transactions with the present number, and with the expectation of being able to issue a work of equal size every six months. From the miscellaneous nature of the subjects, it is obvious that an adherence to chronological order would not be easy. The Society does not undertake to compose a history; its desire is to collect materials for history. Remote and recent periods will, therefore, sometimes be found in immediate contact or anachronous succession: the transactious of the seventeenth century may follow those of the nineteenth. But, although historical order is impossible, the want of it, it is hoped, will not impair the interest which such collections usually excite; and the variety of the facts may compensate for the irregularity of the arrangement. Book Year Book of the Pennsylvania Society of New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book Year Book of the Pennsylvania Society of New York Classic Reprint written by Pennsylvania Society of New York and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Book of the Pennsylvania Society of New York The following pages have been prepared to present, in the most concise form possible, the essential facts of Pennsylvania history. Intended to serve as a summary of Pennsylvania affairs, available for the busy man searching for facts only, the narrative form has been abandoned, and the text arranged in paragraphs, which, in their turn, are gathered together into related chapters. In an elementary text book, such as this is designed to be, little display of original research can be expected; but the author believes the plan and scope of the book to be new, and trusts it sufficiently covers the subject to have genuine usefulness. Book Installations by Architects

Download or read book Installations by Architects written by Sarah Bonnemaison and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2009-08-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, a rich and increasingly diverse practice has emerged in the art world that invites the public to touch, enter, and experience the work, whether it is in a gallery, on city streets, or in the landscape. Like architecture, many of these temporary artworks aspire to alter viewers' experience of the environment. An installation is usually the end product for an artist, but for architects it can also be a preliminary step in an ongoing design process. Like paper projects designed in the absence of "real" architecture, installations offer architects another way to engage in issues critical to their practice. Direct experimentation with architecture's material and social dimensions engages the public around issues in the built environment that concern them and expands the ways that architecture can participate in and impact people's everyday lives. The first survey of its kind, Installations by Architects features fifty of the most significant projects from the last twenty-five years by today's most exciting architects, including Anderson Anderson, Philip Beesley, Diller + Scofidio, John Hejduk, Dan Hoffman, and Kuth/Ranieri Architects. Projects are grouped in critical areas of discussion under the themes of tectonics, body, nature, memory, and public space. Each project is supplemented by interviews with the project architects and the discussions of critics and theorists situated within a larger intellectual context. There is no doubt that installations will continue to play a critical role in the practice of architecture. Installations by Architects aims to contribute to the role of installations in sharpening our understanding of the built environment.

Book Charting an American Republic

Download or read book Charting an American Republic written by Jude M. Pfister and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the American revolutionaries in discord following victory at Yorktown and the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, the proposed federal Constitution of 1787 faced an uncertain future when it was sent to the states for ratification. Sensing an historic moment, three authors--Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay--circulated 85 essays among their fellow statesmen, arguing for a strong federal union. Next to the Constitution itself, The Federalist papers are the most referenced statement of the Founding Fathers' intentions in forming the U.S. government. This book takes a fresh look at the papers in the context of the times in which they were created.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of the Bible reveals conclusively that God has never given up on His original plan for humanity—Paradise on earth! Many Christians believe that when they die they will enjoy everlasting life in heaven with God and the angels and their loved ones--but that’s not what the Bible says! Moreover, most Christians have no idea that the Lord Jesus Christ has empowered them with specific spiritual abilities—gifts of grace—to enable them to serve Him and one another in love, and that how well they learn to function in their spiritual gifts in this lifetime will determine who they will be and what they will be doing in Paradise!

Book Moral Visions and Material Ambitions

Download or read book Moral Visions and Material Ambitions written by A. Kristen Foster and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Single vision for the future of America existed after the Revolution. In light of social and economic changes, America's scope shifted from community-mindedness-the very heart of the republican ideal-to economic individualism. In Moral Visions and Material Ambittions, A. Kristen Foster describes how eager young entrepreneurs in Philadelphia manipulated America's moral vision of a classical republic to facilitate their own material ambitions, fostered by the free market economy that arose between 1776 and 1836. As market developments changed economic relationships in the city, men and women used the Revolutions's republican language to help explain what was happening to them, and in the process they helped redefine class structure in Philadelphia. This study explores the ways Philadelphians used the Revolution and its powerful language of liberty and equality to impose meaning on their lives, as an expanding market irreversibly changed social and econimic relationships in their city and, eventually, throughout the rest of the country.
