Book excerpt: 101 lines or passages from William Shakespeare's works paired with Scripture passages that appear in the bard's classics. To be published just in time for the Shakespeare 400th celebrations. Shakespeare was heavily influenced by Holy Writ. Bible lines, characters and narratives are "verbal characters" in the his plays, poems and sonnets, sometimes subtly and sometimes blatantly. But they are there, revealing the deep scriptural well that was the culture from which Shakespeare drew and also reminding us of scenes and stories in the Bible. Shakespeare knew the Bible--as did everyone during that time. He used Scripture freely in what he wrote because through such biblical allusions, audiences would immediately grasp his meanings, charaterizations and unfolding situations. His works-meant to be performed-gave Scripture life. The Bible was not mere words in Shakespeare's work, but, like all of Scripture, were used for reproof, instruction, conviction and training. Listening to Shakespeare with an ear that's open to whispers from God's Word can kindle both passion for his great literary works and the Greatest Book of all, Holy Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and the Bible: Parallel Passages and Passages Suggested by the Bible With the Religious Sentiments of Shakespeare The author of this book told me once that he was nineteen years of age when he first found Shakspeare and began to read his plays. How the first he read was Macbeth, and he was then but poorly able or fitted to appreciate the power and beauty of it, for he had re ceived only a limited common-school education. Blank-verse was new to him also, for his ear had only been trained to the sing-song of long, short, and common metre, and so he read the first three acts without finding much in them to admire, but became interested, at length, in the story, and then began to find something rich and pregnant he had never found before in any book. This was an incentive, of course, to read on, and so in no long time he read the whole thirty-seven plays, as we all did when we durst, in those days, who had been raised in the shadows of the old meeting-house and taught to believe that to read Shakspeare was a peril to the soul's health. He was soon and ea sily set free from this bondage to fear, and ever since then these works of the mighty master have been his most in timate companions and friends, holding his heart captive, entranced by their beauty and salt of truth. Book Shakespeare s Knowledge and Use of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare s Knowledge and Use of the Bible Classic Reprint written by Charles Wordsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Knowledge and Use of the Bible In any other. Even the notes of critics upon Shakspeare, superfluous] y full in pointing out his obligations, real or supposed, to secular authors, are singularly meagre in the references which they make to the Holy Scriptures. And yet how abun dant is the room for such reference, and how much it may conduce to the mutual illustration of the two books, which as Christians and as Britons we should value most, will be seen, I trust, upon every page of the Second Part of the following dissertation. With regard to the First and very much shorter Part, I must confess that it scarcely comes within the title and proper scope of my design; and that it will be found to contain little which can be new or interesting to older and more advanced readers who may, therefore, if they think fit, pass it over but to the young, for whom the volume is princi pally intended, I trust it may prove useful and I was unwilling to miss the opportunity of giving them information which may help to improve their knowledge of their own language and at the same time enable them to understand better, and so to read with greater profit and pleasure, both their Bible and their Shakspeare - but especially the former.
