Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Lands: Their Modern Customs and Manners Illustrative of Scripture In every nation, however, usages are found which can not be explained or accounted for by a reference to the physical char acter of the country. These customs have an historical original, lost and forgotten, perhaps, in the lapse of time, but still main taining its sway over the minds and manners of those who have inherited them. The fact that the customs now prevalent in Bible lands are so different from those of the West, and yet es sentially identical with the ancient manners of the East, is of the greatest practical importance to the Biblical student. The Hebrew commonwealth has perished; its people are scattered among all the nations of the earth, whose manners they have adopted. The principal clue, therefore, to what they once were, and our chief means of explaining much that is obscure in Holy Writ, will be found in the customs of the modern East. And we prepose, in the second part of the present work, to consider all such details of Oriental life as appear to have, in the main, an historical origin. Download or read book The Nowhere Bible written by Frauke Uhlenbruch and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible contains passages that allow both scholars and believers to project their hopes and fears onto ever-changing empirical realities. By reading specific biblical passages as utopia and dystopia, this volume raises questions about reconstructing the past, the impact of wishful imagination on reality, and the hermeneutic implications of dealing with utopia – “good place” yet “no place” – as a method and a concept in biblical studies. A believer like William Bradford might approach a biblical passage as utopia by reading it as instructions for bringing about a significantly changed society in reality, even at the cost of becoming an oppressor. A contemporary biblical scholar might approach the same passage with the ambition of locating the historical reality behind it – finding the places it describes on a map, or arriving at a conclusion about the social reality experienced by a historical community of redactors. These utopian goals are projected onto a utopian text. This volume advocates an honest hermeneutical approach to the question of how reliably a past reality can be reconstructed from a biblical passage, and it aims to provide an example of disclosing – not obscuring – pre-suppositions brought to the text.

Book God s Address Living with the Triune God Revised Edition

Download or read book God s Address Living with the Triune God Revised Edition written by A. Bryden Black and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How may the notion of Trinity become a practical, down to earth, living reality? The parable of the Good Samaritan must be one of the most familiar stories of Jesus. Yet we often miss what prompted it. Jesus asks the lawyer pointedly, “How do you read?” This workbook seeks to show how people may read their Bibles in a most constructive way that leads to their living with and so loving truly the triune God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who shares life-giving Holy Spirit with his people. In nine study sessions, for either individuals or small groups, with Questions for Reflection after each, readers are taken through the Story of Salvation. From Abraham to the New Testament church’s catechism, they are presented with a particular strategy on how to approach the Christian Scriptures that the central actor in the drama, the triune God, more readily comes into view. This workbook therefore addresses what seems an intractable problem. No longer a formal creed from the fourth century, and certainly not just a medieval scholastic “game,” the goal is for the notion of Trinity to become a practical, down to earth, living reality, for the church and for individual disciples of Jesus.
