Book Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan

Download or read book Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan written by John Day and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterly book is the climax of over twenty-five years of study of the impact of Canaanite religion and mythology on ancient Israel and the Old Testament. It is John Day's magnum opus in which he sets forth all his main arguments and conclusions on the subject. The work considers in detail the relationship between Yahweh and the various gods and goddesses of Canaan, including the leading gods El and Baal, the great goddesses (Asherah, Astarte and Anat), astral deities (Sun, Moon and Lucifer), and underworld deities (Mot, Resheph, Molech and the Rephaim). Day assesses both what Yahwism assimilated from these deities and what it came to reject. More generally he discusses the impact of Canaanite polytheism on ancient Israel and how monotheism was eventually achieved.

Book The Book within the Book

Download or read book The Book within the Book written by Jean-Pierre Sonnet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh approach to an old issue: the question of Moses' authorship. Whereas traditional interpretation equated the "book" written by Moses (Deut 31:9,24) with Deuteronomy, and even with the Pentateuch, and while critical historical exegesis endeavors to identify Deuteronomy's successive redactors, this study assesses the literary claim of Deuteronomy as far as Moses' writing is concerned. The study first describes the process of communication in Deuteronomy's represented world (by Moses to the sons of Israel); it next characterizes the Book of Deuteronomy as communication (by the narrator to the reader); it eventually focuses on Deuteronomy's powerful embodiment of the theme of the "book within the book". Thus approached, Deuteronomy shows itself as a narrative theory of what (holy) "writ" is all about.

Book Essays on the Patriarchal Narratives

Download or read book Essays on the Patriarchal Narratives written by A. R Millard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-05-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is renewed interest in the history and traditions of the patriarchal period. Recent publications have sought, among other things, to show that the biblical patriarchs were a literary, even fictional, creation of the first millennium BC, produced to provide the nation of Israel, which came into prominence only then, with "founding fathers." Much of this new writing is helpful in distinguishing what are traditional or speculative interpretations from the basic texts of Genesis. Sometimes archaeological evidence has been adducted in support of the historicity of the patriarchs and their cultural background in the second millennium BC which can no longer be sustained. Sometimes, however, the value of such evidence is ignored or belittled. -- from the preface

Book The Torn Veil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel M. Gurtner
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2006-12-21
  • ISBN : 9781139463126
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book The Torn Veil written by Daniel M. Gurtner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 2006 text, Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: 'God with us'. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.
