Book Coastal Disaster Risk Management in Bangladesh

Download or read book Coastal Disaster Risk Management in Bangladesh written by Mahbuba Nasreen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses disaster and disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices, constraints and capacity in the context of coastal Bangladesh. Located in the lower riparian of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh has to face frequent disasters such as floods, cyclones, river erosion, salinity intrusion as well as drought. Drawing together a range of multidisciplinary perspectives, Coastal Disaster Risk Management in Bangladesh explores the connection between climate change and DRR issues in this region. The editors reorganize disaster studies around social and physical changes that can reduce these risks and put at risk populations on a stronger footing by making risk reduction the focus. These include measures to improve disaster preparedness, to boost recovery by creating better disaster planning and programs, and physical and social initiatives to improve disaster resilience. Also, analyzing the gender perspective, the volume also utilizes the local knowledge framework to consider whether these populations have resilient knowledge that needs to be incorporated into initiatives based on advanced technology and perspectives. This book will be of interest to academics, researchers, students, policymakers and practitioners in the field of disaster, DRR and governance, climate change, climate change adaptation (CCA) and the environment.

Book excerpt: An inspiring and timely collection of stories about migration, written from twenty women’s perspectives. Somewhere is an inspiring collection of stories about migration. Written from twenty women’s perspectives, it brings a refreshing and uniting voice to this compelling and trending topic. More people are likely to be migrating now than at any other time in history, and this is set to increase as climate change and political unrest pushes even more people to relocate. The implications of migration, especially for women, are often unknown, unheard, unspoken. From the fleeing refugee to the political and economic migrant, a broad range of migration by people of many cultures, ethnicities, and beliefs is shared in this book. Identity, belonging, assimilation and alienation are some of the key topics in this sometimes sad but also joyful book. Treasures of wisdom and heartfelt honesty are found in the stories. The book will give the reader hope, encouragement, or insight into a globally relevant subject on a personal level rather than through distant, abstract news stories. Somewhere encourages open-mindedness and is filled with stories that will likely have a strong impact on the reader.

Book Bangladesh s Maritime Policy

Download or read book Bangladesh s Maritime Policy written by Abul Kalam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following successive international legal verdicts, Bangladesh is now an accredited maritime state. Possessing a spacious territorial sea and an extended continental shelf, with a maritime zone almost equalling its land borders, a ‘window of opportunity’ has opened for the country to realise its developmental aspirations. Yet, it faces numerous challenges, many of which are entwined. This book is a detailed analysis of Bangladesh’s maritime strategy. It charts the country’s maritime legacies, including disputes with both Myanmar and India and analyses the contributions of the leadership in the maritime territorial gains. The author examines Bangladesh’s need to consolidate these newly reclaimed gains, whilst exploring the unremitting interest of major global power players in maintaining maritime resource exploitation, navigation and security. Finally, the author demonstrates how the country needs to embrace the notional principles of sustainable development of its ocean economy to utilize its resources and how it has since been coming to grips with the emerging concept of "blue economy" to enhance its enduring national development. The first systematic study on Bangladesh’s maritime policy and the country’s importance in the emerging geopolitical rivalry in the Indian Ocean, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian and Indian Ocean politics.

Over the years, the EC’s support to IFPRI provided the necessary foundation for cuttingedge research in areas such as climate change; biofuels; and the nexus of agriculture, nutrition, and health. This support has helped IFPRI partner with strategic European partners in civil society, higher education, and public sector areas, with a focus on making food security research accessible through the development of global public goods, capacity-building networks, and technological platforms. In June 2015, IFPRI, the EC, and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) joined together to bring experts and stakeholders to discuss the latest thinking on sustainably improving livelihoods and welfare at a Brussels workshop, “Improving Food Systems for Better Lives.” The workshop highlighted the need for greater convergence among diverse actors, sectors, and stakeholders for the development and implementation of innovative solutions that will improve food systems and enhance food and nutrition security around the world.

Book The role of social protection in strengthening agrifood systems and inclusive rural transformation

Download or read book The role of social protection in strengthening agrifood systems and inclusive rural transformation written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study is one of four undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the DSI-NRF (Department of Science and Innovation and National Research Foundation) Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The purpose of these studies is to review the impact of social protection (SP) interventions on food system outcomes. The overall aim is to define a theory of change and a conceptual framework that link SP to food systems. The focus of this paper is an examination of the project titled “Enhanced Coastal Fisheries in Bangladesh” (ECOFISH-BD), within the Hilsa Fishery Management Action Plan (HFMAP). The HFMAP was implemented from 2005 in five coastal regions of Bangladesh and is a payment-for-ecosystem-services (PES) intervention that provides conditional in-kind assistance. In particular, the HFMAP provides rice to fishers in return for their compliance with fishing restrictions. ECOFISH-BD was initiated in 2014 and extends the HFMAP to include aspects of a “graduation” approach by providing adaptive co-management of the resource, training, alternative livelihood opportunities and support to ensure the inclusion of women and youth in the protected areas.
