Book The Bhagavad Gita

Download or read book The Bhagavad Gita written by and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Bhagavad Gita is one of the noblest scriptures of India, one of the deepest scriptures of the world. It is rich in beauty and full of poetic power. The characters stand out in heroic grandeur, in the midst of a splendid setting of martial valor. The figures of Arjuna, very human in despondency and doubt, and of Krishna, majestic, resolute, persuasive, are clear, living, of universal truth. On another side, the Bhagavad Gita is full of inspiration, of religious devotion, of keenest insight into the heart of man. . . . every stage of Indian philosophy, every shade of logic and metaphysics, is given its place; and many practical suggestions are put forward . . . hints as valid to-day in human affairs as they were two thousand years ago."The present translation and commentary of this Indian classic was completed between 1906 and 1907 and serialized in the periodical magazine The Theosophical Quarterly. These serialized articles, each including an introduction and translation of one or more of the Gita's 18 books, were then compiled and printed as a single volume in 1908 by the same publishing company. The present volume is a verbatim reproduction of that work, with the addition of a foreword, additional notes and an appendix consisting of articles by Johnston, which may shed further light on his understanding of the Gita.Charles Johnston (1867-1931) was steeped in the wisdom of eastern traditions, having also translated the ten Principle Upanishads of the Vedanta, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Tao Teh King of Lao Tse, and the Crest-Jewel of Wisdom of Sankaracharya. Throughout the current translation and commentary he demonstrates an in-depth knowledge not only of the Gita itself, but of the larger culture to which it belongs, the spiritual traditions from which it arose and those it inspired, and the inner, often veiled meanings of eastern symbolism. His translation stands out as one of only a few that truly bring the essence of the Gita to light in the English language.

Book excerpt: Part of the ancient Hindu epic The Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita is one of the enduring religious texts of the world The Bhagavad Gita is an early poem that recounts the conversation between Arjuna the warrior and his charioteer Krishna, a manifestation of God. In the moments before a great battle, Krishna sets out the important lessons Arjuna must learn to understand his own role in the war he is about to fight. Krishna reveals to Arjuna his true cosmic form and counsels the warrior to act according to his sacred obligations. Ranging from instructions on yoga to moral discussion, the Gita has served for centuries as an everyday, practical guide to living well. Translated with an introduction by Laurie L. Patton

Book The Bhagavad g ta

Book excerpt: "The Bhagavad Gita is one of the noblest scriptures of India, one of the deepest scriptures of the world. It is rich in beauty and full of poetic power. The characters stand out in heroic grandeur, in the midst of a splendid setting of martial valor. The figures of Arjuna, very human in despondency and doubt, and of Krishna, majestic, resolute, persuasive, are clear, living, of universal truth. On another side, the Bhagavad Gita is full of inspiration, of religious devotion, of keenest insight into the heart of man. The conflict of motives that beset human action, the clinging fetters of selfishness which check us in the path to the immortal, the subtle evasions of the lurking whisperer in the heart: all are clearly seen and vividly revealed. Yet, withal, the claims of abstract thought are not forgotten; every stage of Indian philosophy, every shade of logic and metaphysics, is given its place; and many practical suggestions are put forward, touching the problems of Indian politics and history, hints as valid to-day in human affairs as they were two thousand years ago."--Introduction, page [vii]

Book The Sacred Quest

Download or read book The Sacred Quest written by D. M. A. Leggett and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucid work challenges the pessimism of scientific materialism and endeavours to bridge the chasm which so frequently separates the scientific and religious interpretation of life. It is a balanced treatise in which Dr Leggett first considers the professed aims of higher education before focussing the reader's attention upon the evidence which suggests survival and reincarnation and which is provided by poetry, mysticism and the paranormal. With an extensive bibliography, this is an excellent book for those who are trying to formulate a personal philosophy.
