Book Beyond Union Lines Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Beyond Union Lines Abridged Annotated written by Junius Henri Browne and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[War] has its fascinations, as drunkenness, licentiousness, murder, journalism, and the stage have theirs. What is War, after all, but scientific assassination, throat-gutting by rule, causing misery and vice, and pain and death by prescribed forms? It is a palpable anachronism, and yet it continues..." We are fortunate to have this remarkable book by famous jounalist Junius Henri Browne, a special war correspondent for the New York Tribune who not only reported from the field in the Civil War but spent time as a captive of the Rebels. A literate, witty, urbane man with a coterie of fellow correspondents at his side (whom he called the Bohemians), Browne witnessed all the horror and carnage of the American Civil War. He was at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and more. As in wars today, some of his fellow reporters were among the casualties. He also wrote of the humorous, the ironic, and the ridiculous side of the conflict. On May 3, 1863, while dodging the shore batteries during the siege of Vicksburg, Browne and his friends were captured by Confederate soldiers. For more than two years, he endured all the deprivations of horribly inadequate prisoner camps, all the while plotting escape. In exciting, witty prose, Browne has left us an account of the war like no other, written shortly after his escape and repatriation to the North in 1865. At the end of the conflict, he adds his thoughts on the future. An opponent of slavery, he says: "Nothing, however, let me remark, seems more inconsistent and irrational than the supposition that the negroes, who have for generations raised the products of the South, while enslaved, will be unable to do so when emancipated." Book A Union Captive Andersonville Belle Isle Florence Stockade Abridged Annotated

Download or read book A Union Captive Andersonville Belle Isle Florence Stockade Abridged Annotated written by Warren Lee Goss and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first thing you'll notice about Warren Goss’ fluid and articulate writing is that he was an educated man. A teacher before the Civil War, he joined the 2nd Regiment, Massachusetts Heavy Artillery as a sergeant. That he survived not one but two captures and incarcerations in the South is nothing short of miraculous. The heartbreak, horrendous conditions, escapes, recapture, false hopes, and death...always death...were enough to break any man. Many died from disease and the loss of a will to live. Warren Goss survived it all and spent the rest of his life writing about it. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book Berdan s United States Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac

Download or read book Berdan s United States Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac written by Captain C. A. Stevens and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispensing 52-caliber death at long distance was their specialty and it made them a favorite target. With their Colts, Sharps, and Whitworth globe rifles, led by one of the world's premier marksmen, Berdan's sharpshooters played an important role at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Brandy Station, and many other battles. Here is the complete history of this unique cadre of men and how they prosecuted their unique brand of warfare from 1861 to 1865. Engineer, inventor, military officer, world-renowned marksman, and commanding colonel of the United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiments during the American Civil War, Hiram Berdan's story and that of his men are little-known today. Yet it is one of the most compelling, exciting, and important stories of the war. Berdan's regiments played a pivotal role in delaying Confederate attacks at Devil's Den and the Peach Orchard at the Battle of Gettysburg. Charles N. Race, of Company K, was one of the youngest soldiers in the Union service, having mustered in 1862 at the age of 14, and was the only Berdan Sharpshooter of the original members remaining as a sharpshooter until the end of the war, July 17, 1865 After the war, Hiram Berdan invented the Berdan rifle, Berdan primer, and other weapons. Book Railroad Tycoon

Download or read book Railroad Tycoon written by George Kennan and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By any account, Edward Henry Harriman was a fascinating individual and a titan of the railroad industry. What Rockefeller was to oil, Harriman was to railroads. By his death Harriman controlled the Union Pacific, the Southern Pacific, the Saint Joseph and Grand Island, the Illinois Central, the Central of Georgia, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and the Wells Fargo Express Company. Even by today's standards, he was a fabulously wealthy and powerful individual. In this long out of print biography of Harriman, author Kenan (cousin to the younger George Kennan) reveals the intricate power-plays that resulted in Harriman's control of properties and vast interests. He was interested in science and even learned ju-jitsu after a trip to Japan. Naturalist John Muir said of Harriman that he was worthy of admiration in almost every way. For the first time, Vol. I and II of this long out-of-print book are available together in an affordable, well-formatted edition for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample. Excerpt: "One day [says Mr. Kruttschnitt] I was walking with Mr. Harriman on the road. He noticed a track bolt and asked me why so much of the bolt should protrude beyond the nut. I replied, " It is the size which is generally used." He said, "Why should we use a bolt of such a length that a part of it is useless?" I replied, " Well, when you come right down to it, there is no reason." We walked along and he asked me how many track bolts there were to a mile of track, and I told him. Thereupon he remarked, "Well, in the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific we have about eighteen thousand miles of track and there must be some fifty million track bolts in our system. If you can cut an ounce off from every bolt, you will save fifty million ounces of iron, and that is something worth while. Change your bolt standard."

Book Beyond the Ultimate Question

Download or read book Beyond the Ultimate Question written by Bob E. Hayes and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business growth depends on more than asking a single question. Challenging the widely touted Net Promoter Score (NPS) claims, author Bob E. Hayes provides compelling evidence that, to grow their business, companies need to look beyond this simple question to efforts on improving the entire customer feedback program (CFP). First, customer loyalty consists of three components, advocacy, purchasing, and retention, each providing unique and useful information regarding future business growth. By measuring these three components of customer loyalty, companies will be better able to manage their customer relationships to maximize growth through new and existing customers. Second, because of the diverse business practices companies can employ with respect to their CFPs, there are hundreds of different ways a company can structure its particular program. Some companies have top executive support for their programs while others do not. Some companies integrate their customer feedback data into their daily business processes while others keep them separate. Some companies use customer feedback results as part of their employee incentive programs while other companies rely on more traditional incentive programs. Still some companies conduct in-depth customer research using their feedback data while others rely on basic reporting of their customer feedback data for their customer insight. But are there critical elements of a customer feedback program that are absolutely necessary for its success? Can a company exclude some elements from its program without adversely impacting its effectiveness? How important are certain components in increasing customer loyalty? This book answers these questions. It is a direct result of the author’s scientific research and professional experience in the field of customer satisfaction and loyalty. This book represents the first scientific study that has tried to identify the best practices of customer feedback programs. Hayes formally collected information from many CFP professionals regarding how they structure their CFPs, and identified specific CFP practices that lead to higher levels of customer loyalty. Additionally, he worked first-hand with employees from Microsoft, Oracle, Harris Stratex Networks, Akamai, and American Express Business Travel in gathering insights and case studies to illustrate how to build a world class CFP. Learn why companies should look beyond the NPS as the ultimate question and learn how to design an effective CFP that will help improve the customer experience, increase customer loyalty, and, ultimately, drive business growth. For those unfamiliar with CFPs, the appendices provide detail on methods used in the main body of the book: a discussion on methods of determining customer requirements (those elements of your business that are important to your customers), a complete discussion on how to write survey questions, and brief discussions on particular statistical analysis methods that can help you understand how customer feedback data are analyzed.
