Book excerpt: A growing body of work has shown that the quality of national institutions that enforce written contracts plays an important role in shaping a country's comparative advantage. Using highly disaggregated bilateral and unique harmonized firm-level trade data across a large number of countries, this paper contributes to this literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms through which institutional frictions affect the pattern of aggregate trade flow, distinguishing the effects on the intensive and extensive margins. The analysis finds that contractual friction distorts countries' trade pattern beyond its effect on domestic production structure, by deterring the probability of exporting (the extensive margin) and export sales after entry (the intensive margin), particularly in industries that rely more heavily on relationship-specific inputs (more vulnerable to holdup problems). The analysis also finds that contractual frictions matter more for the intensive margin than the extensive margin of exporting. In addition, better contracting institutions increase the probability of survival of new export products in more contract-intensive industries. These results have important policy implications for developing countries that seek to boost export growth but many of which suffer from poor contracting institutions.

Chapter 1 investigates the effects of globalization on human capital investment under labor market frictions. I present a new economic geographical general equilibrium model with individuals' endogenous education choices in the institutional context of China. The model indicates that the expanding market access due to globalization, along with the restrictive household registration system and rural land policies of China, tends to intensify rural-urban college educational inequality, although globalization promotes the total human capital formation; such effects of market access on urban-rural dispersions vary across regions. Based on the testable predictions of the model from chapter 1, Chapter 2 quantified the effects imposed by market access on individuals' education decisions by using China Income Project Data for year 1995 and 2002. Chapter 2 demonstrated that each one percent increase in market access is associated with an increase in the difference between the probability of getting higher education for urban hukou holders by around 1.2 percentage points than that for rural hukou holders. Chapter 2 also provides a discussion of the econometric issues in identification and estimation of the effects of market access on individuals' education choices. Chapter 3 moves beyond labor market frictions to study the role of China's extensive subsidies in an open economy. We build a general equilibrium open economy model with heterogeneous firms to quantify the welfare effect of Chinese capital-biased subsidies. Firms are heterogeneous not in the productivities but also their capabilities to obtain subsidies from the government. Combining this two characteristics, the government decision rule is revealed as the distribution of subsidized firms which we can observe and calibrate from the Chinese firm-level data.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this study of Japan-U.S. trade friction and the role perceptual differences have played in its evolution differs from its predecessors in key ways. First, it is interdisciplinary, drawing on the research of anthropologists, area specialists, intercultural communication specialists, linguists, sociologists, and social psychologists as well as that of political scientists and economists. Second, it both identifies and quantifies perceptual differences between Japanese and American opinion leaders regarding the large bilateral trade imbalances, the bilateral relationship, and national negotiating styles. Third, original data were collected from completed questionnaires sent to 230 American and 230 Japanese opinion leaders from business, government, academia, and the media, who had been involved in some way with the rice, automotive, or semiconductor sectors. Fourth, the three case studies of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction causal factors and perceptual dynamics. Finally, based on the findings of this study, modest suggestions are offered on how the bilateral perceptual gap might be narrowed and trade friction diminished so that the structural and sectoral problems might more effectively be addressed.
