The family is just beginning to pull itself together when calamity strikes again, in an unlikely fashion. As Stephanie tries to make sense of the changes in her life, what first seems a minor accident will lead to life-altering transformations—both for her family and herself. Gossip spreads quickly in small prairie towns, and the face people present in public can be far different from the one they wear in private. As Stephanie searches for the true love Matka promised her, she’s faced with hard choices. Family pulls her one direction while her heart pulls her another, and she must make a decision that will bring heartache to those she cares about—regardless of her choice. Strong and unfailingly kind, even in the face of overwhelming adversity, Stephanie cannot help but let her past color her future, even as she seeks to grow—as a woman, wife, and mother. Her unique spirituality and her mother’s death-bed guidance provide her with a lifeline, one she counts upon through the myriad obstacles she faces on her life journey, from true love separated by WWII, suspicious deaths, elder abuse, and revelations of unfaithfulness.

Book Behind the Magic Curtain

Download or read book Behind the Magic Curtain written by T. K. Thorne and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Magic Curtain: Secrets, Spies, and Unsung White Allies of Birmingham’s Civil Rights Days is a remarkable look at a historic city enmeshed in racial tensions, revealing untold or forgotten stories of secret deals, law enforcement intrigue, and courage alongside pivotal events that would sweep change across the nation. Birmingham, Alabama gave birth to momentous events that spawned the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and affected world history. But that is not why it is known as The Magic City. It earned that nickname with its meteoric rise from a cornfield valley to an industrial boomtown in the late 1800s. Images of snarling dogs and fire hoses of the 1960s define popular perception of the city, obscuring the complexity of race relations in a tumultuous time and the contributions of white citizens who quietly or boldly influenced social change. Behind the Magic Curtain peels back history’s veil to reveal little-known or never-told stories of an intriguing cast of characters that include not only progressive members of the Jewish, Christian, and educational communities, but also a racist businessman and a Ku Klux Klan member, who, in an ironic twist, helped bring about justice and forward racial equality and civil rights. Woven throughout the book are the firsthand recollections of a reporter with the state’s major newspaper of the time. Embedded with law enforcement, he reveals the fascinating details of their secret wiretapping and intelligence operations. With a deft hand, Thorne offers the insight that can be gained from understanding little-known but important perspectives, painting a multihued portrait of a city that has figured so prominently in history, but which so few really know.

Book Behind the White Curtains

Download or read book Behind the White Curtains written by Tola and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a representative yet intriguing story of the state of the power, hegemony, and economic considerations overshadowing humility, scholarship, and the quest for excellence. The outwardly pseudo-noble progress of the learning sector is in reality a downfall, where greed and compulsions to maintain an empire overpowers all values, ethics, and morals. This also is a story of Maya, who is a victim and witness to this downfall. After opening its floodgates to private enlightening players, recognizing opportunity at the right time, an instructor jumps in to liberalize learning! More establishments under the ambit, more students, more establishments, more courses. And to manage all this, Royal-Mans children step in. Thus begins the power game of keeping everything within the family, not very different from a godfather running a mafia! Naturally, only sycophants and non-scholars can survive. In this game, nothing matters but power and money. Royal-Man, blinded by his weakness for the family, has to compromise the very principles and values that he believed at one time when he entered the noble field! As a result, the focus on quality, service, and outreach is completely lost. When Royal-Man feels the power is slipping from his hands, he begins the process of elimination. Everybody is under surveillance. Everyone must concede with what he says, else you are eliminated. Nobody will be spared. This is the epitome of intolerance to any other thought, and the fascist traits surface.

Book Behind the Pine Curtain

Download or read book Behind the Pine Curtain written by Gerri Hill and published by Bella Books. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas when she was seventeen, sent away because she was gay. Her family was the largest employer in the county, owning Pine Springs Lumber, and her father was mayor of this small town. Her mother could not accept the fact that her only child was gay, could not tolerate the gossip about her family. So, with a hundred dollars in her pocket and a one-way bus ticket out of town, Jacqueline was told not to come back until she had come to her senses. And that included being prepared to marry the son of a business associate of the family. Fifteen years later—long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, long after she'd worked nights to put herself through college, and long after she'd written her first best seller, No Place For Family—Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death. The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush. She and Kay had been inseparable as kids, and later as teens. They find themselves falling back into their old habits, and Jackie is soon fighting the same feelings she'd had when she was seventeen. But living behind the pine curtain, Kay is afraid of her love for Jackie, afraid of what her family will say, afraid of how the town will react. Jackie refuses to hide, refuses to crawl back into the closet, so once again, she leaves Pine Springs...alone.

Book Beyond the Color Line and the Iron Curtain

Download or read book Beyond the Color Line and the Iron Curtain written by Kate A. Baldwin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the significant influence of the Soviet Union on the work of four major African American authors—and on twentieth-century American debates about race—Beyond the Color Line and the Iron Curtain remaps black modernism, revealing the importance of the Soviet experience in the formation of a black transnationalism. Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, Claude McKay, and Paul Robeson each lived or traveled extensively in the Soviet Union between the 1920s and the 1960s, and each reflected on Communism and Soviet life in works that have been largely unavailable, overlooked, or understudied. Kate A. Baldwin takes up these writings, as well as considerable material from Soviet sources—including articles in Pravda and Ogonek, political cartoons, Russian translations of unpublished manuscripts now lost, and mistranslations of major texts—to consider how these writers influenced and were influenced by both Soviet and American culture. Her work demonstrates how the construction of a new Soviet citizen attracted African Americans to the Soviet Union, where they could explore a national identity putatively free of class, gender, and racial biases. While Hughes and McKay later renounced their affiliations with the Soviet Union, Baldwin shows how, in different ways, both Hughes and McKay, as well as Du Bois and Robeson, used their encounters with the U. S. S. R. and Soviet models to rethink the exclusionary practices of citizenship and national belonging in the United States, and to move toward an internationalism that was a dynamic mix of antiracism, anticolonialism, social democracy, and international socialism. Recovering what Baldwin terms the "Soviet archive of Black America," this book forces a rereading of some of the most important African American writers and of the transnational circuits of black modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1930s, men and a handful of women came from India's many communities-Marathi, Parsi, Goan, North Indian, and many others--to Mumbai to work in an industry that constituted in the words of some, "the original fusion music." They worked as composers, arrangers, assistants, and studio performers in one of the most distinctive popular music and popular film cultures on the planet. Today, the songs played by Mumbai's studio musicians are known throughout India and the Indian diaspora under the popular name "Bollywood," but the musicians themselves remain, in their own words, "behind the curtain"--the anonymous and unseen performers of one of the world's most celebrated popular music genres. Now, Gregory D. Booth offers a compelling account of the Bollywood film music industry from the perspective of the musicians who both experienced and shaped its history. In a rare insider's look at the process of musical production from the late 1940s to the mid 1990s, before the advent of digital recording technologies, Booth explains who these unknown musicians were and how they came to join the film music industry. On the basis of a fascinating set of first-hand accounts from the musicians themselves, he reveals how the day-to-day circumstances of technology and finance shaped both the songs and the careers of their creator and performers. Booth also unfolds the technological, cultural, and industrial developments that led to the enormous studio orchestras of the 1960s-90s as well as the factors which ultimately led to their demise in contemporary India. Featuring an extensive companion website with video interviews with the musicians themselves, Behind the Curtain is a powerful, ground-level view of this globally important music industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More people than ever are going to graduate school to seek a PhD these days. When they get there, they discover a bewildering environment: a rapid immersion in their discipline, a keen competition for resources, and uncertain options for their future, whether inside or outside of academia. Life with a PhD can begin to resemble an unsolvable maze. In Behind the Academic Curtain, Frank F. Furstenberg offers a clear and user-friendly map to this maze. Drawing on decades of experience in academia, he provides a comprehensive, empirically grounded, and, most important of all, practical guide to academic life. While the greatest anxieties for PhD candidates and postgrads are often centered on getting that tenure-track dream job, each stage of an academic career poses a series of distinctive problems. Furstenberg divides these stages into five chapters that cover the entire trajectory of an academic life, including how to make use of a PhD outside of academia. From finding the right job to earning tenure, from managing teaching loads to conducting research, from working on committees to easing into retirement, he illuminates all the challenges and opportunities an academic can expect to encounter. Each chapter is designed for easy consultation, with copious signposts, helpful suggestions, and a bevy of questions that all academics should ask themselves throughout their career, whether at a major university, junior college, or a nonacademic organization. An honest and up-to-date portrayal of how this life really works, Behind the Academic Curtain is an essential companion for any scholar, at any stage of his or her career.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord Almighty, in His kindness, compassion and mercy, may give everyone billions, but He knows well that human beings are never going to be in pleasure when they are given without limits. Therefore, God gives, according to His wisdoms, a little little bit. But man is running to reach more and more, saying, "It is not enough!" Humankind living on this planet are asking for pleasure in their lives, and mostly now people are looking and seeing that pleasure is through riches. They think that if they get richer, there is going to be more pleasure for them, and that is wrong. Their egos are like a thirsty person, thirsty for physical and material desires. They are running to the ocean to take away their thirst but no matter how much salty water they drink, they become even more thirsty. But when a thirsty person drinks once cup of pure, plain water, that cup is enough to take his thirst away. Our physical being is only for a short time, a very short time, and its perfection is only for keeping our souls in, but it is not a perpetual being. Yesterday we were nothing. Tomorrow we are going to be nothing. Between two nothings, how are we going to claim "I am here"? Our physical being is going to be dust. But the perfection of our spiritual being, that is something else. If you reach that perfection, you are most fortunate. Those who took care of their spiritual perfection, should be happy with a new beginning, with a new structure, with a new being. They should reach unknown places that they only heard about before, and their perfection should continue in the afterlife also. Therefore, the Lord sent, from His Divine Presence, from Heavens, chosen servants adorned with that secret power to arrange the lives of people on earth for reaching their ultimate perfection. Therefore those who are asking for pleasure in their hearts, they understand that they will find it only in the Divine Presence, and the way to the Divine Presence passes through Divine messengers, those who are on the way of God. If you listen to someone whose speech gives your heart, satisfaction, taking darkness away from your heart and your mind, and cleaning your intellect, you can understand that his level is high. If you find such a one hold onto his hand until he takes you to your final destination in the Divine Presence.
