But is this belief anything more than a fleeting echo in the wind? Does voting for political party colors represent significant participation, or rather a sophisticated dance in the puppetry of the established system? Who truly are the architects behind the curtain directing the symphony of global power? Could it be the cunning elite whose dominion transcends political facades that is behind it all? In this gripping tale, it hints at the possibility that genuine governance rests in the hands of invisible puppeteers who craft a script that many choose to overlook. In a world where injustice reigns like an empire, Cyper, a young man burdened by the weight of inequality, emerges as the linchpin of a plot that will unravel the mysteries of a divided planet. A colossal wall, erected by the northern inhabitants with barbed wires tearing flesh, fractures the land almost entirely. Cyper, our protagonist, unveils in first person the challenges of his life, marked by his attraction to other boys and the adversities of his youth. His odyssey to return to his native continent, escaping the desolation of the north, becomes a journey filled with dangers and discoveries.

Book excerpt: The wall separating the cloister from the surrounding world is one of the most distinctive features of a monastery: it marks out the community of monks or friars and defines the very essence of a cloister. However, this wall was never completely impenetrable. Those inside interacted with those outside – in churches, in towns and villages, or even in the cloisters. It is this permeability of the cloister wall what constitutes the central motif of this book. Using the example of the Franciscan Friary of St Bernardino in Olomouc (nowadays in the Czech Republic) it analyses the interaction of the friars and the urban community. It focuses on the 17th and 18th centuries when, following the suppression of non-Catholic confessions, Roman Catholicism became the only official religion and the city became one of major ecclesiastical centres in the Habsburg Lands. The Franciscans significantly contributed to the formation of the new Catholic confessional culture in the city, yet they were just one of the many agents. They were forced to constantly re-negotiate their position and to compete with other religious institutions. The mendicant character of the order eventually proved to be their main advantage. Although the life in strict poverty brought many complications, it also greatly enhanced the prestige of the friars. Simultaneously, it motivated them to search for new and efficient ways to address the people. Begging for alms thus became one of the main forms of interaction between the friary and the local community, allowing the mendicants to extend their reach significantly, to emphasise their uniqueness and importance, and to patiently build their own network of ties to the local population. The story of the friary of St Bernardino in Olomouc demonstrates that early modern Roman Catholicism was not built unilaterally, from the top down, but was instead the result of synergy and even conflicts between many actors.

Dick and N.K. Jemisin.”—CrimeReads SHORTLISTED FOR THE URSULA K. LE GUIN PRIZE FOR FICTION In Ashtown, a rough-and-tumble desert community, the Emperor rules with poisoned claws and an iron fist. He can’t show any sign of weakness, as the neighboring Wiley City has spent lifetimes beating down the people of Ashtown and would love nothing more than its downfall. There’s only one person in the desert the Emperor can fully trust—and her name is Scales. Scales is the best at what she does: keeping everyone and everything in line. As a skilled mechanic—and an even more skilled fighter, when she needs to be—Scales is a respected member of the Emperor’s crew, who’s able to keep things running smoothly. But the fragile peace Scales helps to maintain is fractured when a woman is mangled and killed before her eyes. Even more incomprehensible: There doesn’t seem to be a murderer. When more bodies start to turn up, both in Ashtown and in the wealthier, walled-off Wiley City, Scales is tasked with finding the cause—and putting an end to it by any means necessary. To protect the people she loves, she teams up with a frustratingly by-the-books partner from Ashtown and a brusque-but-brilliant scientist from the City, delving into both worlds to track down an invisible killer. But the answers Scales finds are bigger than she ever could have imagined, leading her into the brutal heart beneath Wiley City’s pristine façade and dredging up secrets from her own past that she would rather keep hidden. If she wants to save the world from the earth-shattering truths she uncovers, she can no longer remain silent—even if speaking up costs her everything.

Book excerpt: People lived peacefully in the vast lands called the Old World, north of the Sandvelôr mainland. But the turn in their fate was very sudden; For a long time Riâthdor was planning, behind the black walls, secretly preparing his dark forces for the great war. One night in autumn, from behind the Firepit Mountains, the dark warriors of Riâthdor began to flow; moreover, with powers and numbers that people had never witnessed or even imagined in their lives until that moment. This incident made its name written in history as the "Red Destruction". Riâthdor the Cursed Darkness has unleashed his wrath across the Old World, aided by his army of dark beings. Most of the people were driven far south, beyond the Storm Mountains and deep into the vast Mist Forest; except for the people who take shelter in the Sunset Port region behind the Hope Mountains, where the dark forces have not yet reached. And one day, ships belonging to the Palôthien Kingdom were seen in Sunset Port. Of course, the Santûes did not come across all those miles of sea in vain; they set sail to invite people who had fallen on hard times after the Red Destruction to Palôthien with the promise of a peaceful life. Ultimately, that day, humans viewed the invitation of the santûes moderately and agreed to settle in Palôthien. However, on the island, a terrible secret was hidden behind the high walls of the city known as the "Circle". And in the depths of the Impenetrable Caves, there is another terrifying secret... This story, written about sacrifice, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, revenge, love, mercy, cruelty and war, begins on the day when Rôyîl's invitation to the Circle was made. As you turn the pages, you will find yourself in an adventurous time travel that reveals the secrets of Hidden Island.

Book Last of the Giants

Download or read book Last of the Giants written by Mick Wall and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Last Of the Giants is the mad, funny, dark and often painful story of a lost band from a now-distant time' CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE INCLUDES BRAND NEW CHAPTER COVERING GUNS N' ROSES EPIC WORLD TOUR 'Any story about Guns is worth reading. But when the author is Mick Wall it's absolutely essential' KERRANG Many millions of words have already been written about Guns N' Roses, the old line-up, the new line-up. But none of them have ever really gotten to the truth. Which is this: Guns N' Roses has always been a band out of time, the Last of the Giants. They are what every rock band since the Rolling Stones has tried and nearly always failed to be: dangerous. At a time when smiling, MTV-friendly, safe-sex, just-say-no Bon Jovi was the biggest band in the world, here was a band that seemed to have leapt straight out of the coke-smothered pages of the original, golden-age, late-sixties rock scene. 'Live like a suicide', the band used to say when they all lived together in the Hell House, their notorious LA home. And this is where Mick Wall first met them, and became part of their inner circle, before famously being denounced by name by Axl Rose in the song 'Get in the Ring'. But this book isn't about settling old scores. Written with the clear head that 25 years later brings you, this is a celebration of Guns N' Roses the band, and of Axl Rose the frontman who really is that thing we so desperately want him to be: the last of the truly extraordinary, all-time great, no apologies, no explanations, no giving-a-shit rock stars. The last of his kind.

Book Behind the Wall

Download or read book Behind the Wall written by Rich Wiles and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-02-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the approximately seven million Palestinian refugees around the world, more than 650,000 are living in camps along the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Having been forced from their homes, either through violence or the threat of it, those living in these camps, Rich Wiles asserts, suffer greatly from Israeli Army incursions, violence, poverty, and desperation—often even more severely than in the surrounding cities or villages. Although much media attention has been drawn to the area's political climate, the stories of its dispossessed people have gone largely underreported. Having spent much of his time in Palestine since 2003, Wiles offers a glimpse inside the West Bank's refugee camps between 2006 and 2007 through a collection of oral histories, vignettes, and photographic portraits. In these pieces, Wiles recounts conversations with Palestinians of all ages, including survivors of al-Nakba, released child and female prisoners, parents trying to rear their children amid the violence of military occupation, and exiles struggling for the right of return to their original villages. These intimate portrayals not only offer clues to understanding the physical and psychological effects of exile, colonization, and occupation, they also reveal the true Palestinian psyche, one that is at once full of life, love, and strength. Through both written word and photographic image, Behind the Wall allows Palestinians to speak for themselves.

Book Beyond the Hanging Wall

Book excerpt: Like his physician father, Garth Baxtor is gifted with The Touch. By laying his hands upon a person, Garth can sense what dwells within: pain, illness, joy, or sorrow. It is through the application of The Touch that the gifted minister helps the sick of Escator by diagnosing ills and promoting healing. By decree of the royal treasury, for a period of three weeks each year, physicians of Escator - in lieu of taxes - are required to attend to the needs of the criminals who labor endlessly in the Veins, the labyrinth of mines carved deep into the earth and from which they harvest the gloam-a priceless commodity upon which the fortunes of Escator depend. It is during one such period of mandatory service that Joseph Baxtor decides his son is old enough to accompany him to the Veins as his apprentice. Garth is delighted. It's a chance to escape the dull and dreary surroundings of his quiet village for the delights of the capital city of Ruen. Joseph has been ordered to attend King Cavor himself. Garth will actually meet the king in person! As he discovers all too soon, however, the task at hand is a grim one. Descending into the mines for the first time, Garth could hardly be less prepared for what he encounters: thousands of men laboring like animals in dreadful conditions deep below the earth's surface. Applying his hands to the wound of one prisoner known only as Lot No. 859, Garth is stunned by what he discovers. This man is no common criminal. But then, who is he? Could it be? After all these years? Prince Maximillian? The answer to the riddle will involve Garth in a harrowing journey out of the Veins and into the Land of Dreams as he tries to resolve the question of the identity of Lot No 859. In the process, Garth will solve a centuries-old mystery-a mystery that will pit one king against another and shake the Kingdom of Escator to its foundations.
