Book excerpt: Crossing a river against a defending enemy force is a difficult and complex task for any army. History has shown that preparation is necessary to avoid disasters during this type of operation. In 2003, the Third Infantry Division crossed the Euphrates River because it was prepared for this task and possessed the necessary equipment. Since then, no other divisions or corps has executed river crossing operations. While the United States Army focused on counterinsurgency operations during the last twelve years, it underwent significant changes to adapt to meet the adversities on the battlefield. It transformed its war-fighting organizations, trained its corps and divisions with computer simulations, and relegated field training to brigade and below units. In addition, its current doctrine now refers to river crossings as the deliberate wet gap crossing. Because of these changes, many questions arose as to the present corps and divisions’ preparedness to do large-scale operations, to include its ability to plan, prepare, and execute the deliberate wet gap crossing. If called today, could these organizations conduct this complex operation? Examining river crossings in Europe during the Second World War was appropriate for insight into how the previous generation of corps and divisions prepared and executed such a complex task. After analyzing how these units were able to cross the numerous waterways in Europe, the present Army should consider reassessing its doctrine, training, and organization and equipment to prepare its units for future deliberate wet gap crossings.

It is not intended to be a comprehensive account of World War II Ranger operations, for such a study would have to include numerous minor actions that are too poorly documented to be studied to advantage. As such, it draws a wide range of lessons useful to combat leaders who may have to conduct such operations or be on guard against them in the future. These are surprise, the quality of opposing forces, the success of friendly forces with which the Rangers were cooperating, and popular support.

General characteristics of light infantry forces are identified, and an analysis of how light forces operate tactically and how they are supported is presented. In the process, the relationship of the light infantry ethic to its organization is evaluated, and the differences between light infantry and conventional infantry is illuminated. For the purpose of this study, the term conventional infantry refers to modern-day motorized and mechanized infantry and to the large dismounted infantry forces typical of the standard infantry divisions of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study concludes that light infantry is unique and distinct. A light infantry ethic exits and manifests itself in a distinctive tactical style, in a special attitude toward the environment, in a freedom from dependence on fixed lines of communication, and in a strong propensity for self-reliance. The study is based on a historical analysis of 4 light infantry forces employed during and since World War II: The Chindits, in the 1944 Burma campaign against the Japanese; The Chinese communist Forces during the Korean War; British operations in Malaya and Borneo 1948-66; and the First Special Service Force in the mountains of Italy 1942-44. -- p. Before being added to the chain, the data (block) is time-stamped and verified. Each block builds upon the data in the one before it. The data is very difficult to forge due to the mathematical complexity of the storage system. The legacy of cryptocurrencies has helped turn the cryptographic term "blockchain" into a trendy catchphrase. A lot of people think blockchain is the same thing as cryptocurrencies. The opposite is true. Blockchain is the underlying technology behind cryptocurrencies, but its uses extend well beyond that. Blockchains may be considered for use in situations requiring the validation, auditing, or exchange of data. Here, we survey the literature on integrating blockchain with machine learning, and show that the two may work together successfully and efficiently. Machine learning is an umbrella word that includes a wide range of techniques, such as traditional ML, DL, and RL. As a distributed and append-only ledger system, the blockchain is a natural instrument for sharing and processing large data from multiple sources thanks to the inclusion of smart contracts, which is a crucial component of the infrastructure necessary for big data analysis. When it comes to training and testing machine learning models, blockchain can keep data secure and promote data exchange. In addition, it paves the way for the creation of timely prediction models using several data sources by leveraging distributed computing resources (like IoT). This is crucial for deep learning processes, which need a lot of processing time. However, distributed systems are more difficult to monitor and regulate than centralized ones, and blockchain systems will create a massive quantity of data from a variety of sources. The best blockchain mechanism designs need accurate data analysis and predictions of system behaviors. Data verification, as well as the detection of harmful assaults and dishonest transactions on the blockchain, may be aided by machine learning. There is a lot to gain from studying how to merge the two technologies from different perspectives.
