Book Beyond the Archive

Download or read book Beyond the Archive written by Jens Brockmeier and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our longstanding view of memory and remembering is in the midst of a profound transformation. This transformation does not only affect our concept of memory or a particular idea of how we remember and forget; it is a wider cultural process. In order to understand it, one must step back and consider what is meant when we say memory. Brockmeier's far-ranging studies offer such a perspective, synthesizing understandings of remembering from the neurosciences, humanities, social studies, and in key works of autobiographical literature and life-writing. His conclusions force us to radically rethink our very notion of memory as an archive of the past, one that suggests the natural existence of a distinctive human capacity (or a set of neuronal systems) enabling us to "encode," "store," and "recall" past experiences. Now, propelled by new scientific insights and digital technologies, a new picture is emerging. It shows that there are many cultural forms of remembering and forgetting, embedded in a broad spectrum of human activities and artifacts. This picture is more complex than any notion of memory as storage of the past would allow. Indeed it comes with a number of alternatives to the archival memory, one of which Brockmeier describes as the narrative approach. The narrative approach not only permits us to explore the storied weave of our most personal form of remembering--that is, the autobiographical--it also sheds new light on the interrelations among memory, self, and culture.

Book Beyond the Light Barrier

Download or read book Beyond the Light Barrier written by Elizabeth Klarer and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Light Barrier is the autobiographical story of Elizabeth Klarer, a South African woman and Akon, an astrophysicist from Meton, a planet of Proxima Centuri that, at a distance of about 4.3 light years, is our nearest stellar neighbor. Elizabeth was taken in his spaceship to Meton, where she lived with him and his family for four months and where she bore his child. Her life on Meton is fascinatingly described. Akon brought Elizabeth back to Earth after the birth of their son, and continued to visit her thereafter. Akon explained how his spaceship's light-propulsion technology operated, and how it allowed him and his people to travel across vast interstellar distances. This technology is explained in detail in the book. Elizabeth was given a standing ovation at the 11th International Congress of UFO Research Groups at Weisbaden in 1975, and her speech as guest of honor was applauded by scientists of twenty-two nations. Light Technology Publishing is proud to bring you the long-awaited American edition in both hard copy and electronic format of Beyond the Light Barrier, which was first published in English in 1980

Book excerpt: This collection of highly readable essays reveals that research is not restricted to library archives. When researchers pursue information and perspectives from sources beyond the archives—from existing people and places— they are often rewarded with unexpected discoveries that enrich their research and their lives. Beyond the Archives: Research as a Lived Process presents narratives that demystify and illuminate the research process by showing how personal experiences, family history, and scholarly research intersect. Editors Gesa E. Kirsch and Liz Rohan emphasize how important it is for researchers to tap into their passions, pursuing research subjects that attract their attention with creativity and intuition without limiting themselves to traditional archival sources and research methods. Eighteen contributors from a number of disciplines detail inspiring research opportunities that led to recently published works, while offering insights on such topics as starting and finishing research projects, using a wide range of types of sources and methods, and taking advantage of unexpected leads, chance encounters and simple clues. In addition, the narratives trace the importance of place in archival research, the parallels between the lives of research subjects and researchers, and explore archives as sites that resurrect personal, cultural, and historical memory. Beyond the Archives sheds light on the creative, joyful, and serendipitous nature of research, addressing what attracts researchers to their subjects, as well as what inspires them to produce the most thorough, complete, and engaged scholarly work. This timely and essential volume supplements traditional-method textbooks and effectively models concrete practices of retrieving and synthesizing information by professional researchers.

Book Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Download or read book Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle written by Sigmund Freud and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-07-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in Freud's view we are driven by the desire for pleasure as well as by the desire to avoid pain. But the pursuit of pleasure has never been a simple thing. Pleasure can be a form of fear, a form of memory and a way of avoiding reality. Above all, as these essays show with remarkable eloquence, pleasure is a way in which we repeat ourselves. The essays collected in this volume explore, in Freud's uniquely subtle and accessible style, the puzzles of pleasure and morality - the enigmas of human development.

Download or read book Beyond the Hero written by Allan B. Chinen and published by Tarcher. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some men yearn for an earlier time when heroes were honored by all, when patriarchs ruled over women and nations. But, deep in their souls, most men today know that they cannot turn back the clock. Together in small groups, or alone in their own hearts, they are seeking a path beyond traditional male hegemony, beyond the solitary hero - a path toward a vital yet compassionate masculinity. This quest is not a recent invention, a result of the men's movement or of feminism. Instead, it has appeared in tales throughout history. As Dr. Allan Chinen tells these stories - from France, Morocco, Germany, Italy, Russia - readers will meet archetypes such as the wizard, the hunter, the shaman, and especially the Trickster. These male figures are healers rather than heroes, communicators rather than conquerors, explorers rather than exploiters. They are fierce but avoid violence; they are independent but related to the feminine; they are wild but nurturing. Beyond the Hero points the way toward a deeper, seasoned masculinity, and offers both men and women the hope of a more authentic way of life.
