Book excerpt: What if your daughter’s propensity for “feeling all the feels” is actually a good thing? Teens and tweens have a reputation for letting their emotions get the best of them, so much so that we often wonder if our families (and the world) wouldn’t be better off if these young women we love could feel just a little less. But as Linda Barrick discovered, these emotions play an important role in the spiritual lives of young women, and, when they learn to direct them rightly, their feelings can be a powerful force for good in their lives, homes, and schools. That’s why Linda and her daughter Jen wrote this devotional for teen girls. After Linda’s daughter, Jen, was in a traumatic car accident, Jen was in many ways “frozen” at age fifteen and completely uninhibited. That means Jen still says what she’s thinking and feeling almost all the time. Because of this Jen’s mom, Linda, got a unique glimpse into the inner world of young women, and she realized that the emotions young teen girls feel are a beautiful gift. It gives them the ability, like Jen, to have an unhindered, best-friend relationship with their Heavenly Father. In this 30-day devotional for young teen girls, Jen Barrick, with the help of her mom, Linda Barrick, compiled her own real-life prayers with passages from Psalms in order to speak directly to the heart of young women. It will teach these teens and tweens how to cultivate a deep, emotional relationship with the God who loves them. Each day will: address a different feeling and examine it in light of God’s truth from a short passage of Psalms affirm young women’s feelings as a gift of God demonstrate how their emotions are meant to lead them closer to God show them how to make their faith stronger when they use God’s Word to navigate their emotions

Book excerpt: Prada stores carry a few obscenely expensive items in order to boost sales for everything else (which look like bargains in comparison). People used to download music for free, then Steve Jobs convinced them to pay. How? By charging 99 cents. That price has a hypnotic effect: the profit margin of the 99 Cents Only store is twice that of Wal-Mart. Why do text messages cost money, while e-mails are free? Why do jars of peanut butter keep getting smaller in order to keep the price the "same"? The answer is simple: prices are a collective hallucination. In Priceless, the bestselling author William Poundstone reveals the hidden psychology of value. In psychological experiments, people are unable to estimate "fair" prices accurately and are strongly influenced by the unconscious, irrational, and politically incorrect. It hasn't taken long for marketers to apply these findings. "Price consultants" advise retailers on how to convince consumers to pay more for less, and negotiation coaches offer similar advice for businesspeople cutting deals. The new psychology of price dictates the design of price tags, menus, rebates, "sale" ads, cell phone plans, supermarket aisles, real estate offers, wage packages, tort demands, and corporate buyouts. Prices are the most pervasive hidden persuaders of all. Rooted in the emerging field of behavioral decision theory, Priceless should prove indispensable to anyone who negotiates.

Download or read book Priceless written by Frank Ackerman and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As clinical as it sounds to express the value of human lives, health, or the environment in cold dollars and cents, cost-benefit analysis requires it. More disturbingly, this approach is being embraced by a growing number of politicians and conservative pundits as the most reasonable way to make many policy decisions regarding public health and the environment. By systematically refuting the economic algorithms and illogical assumptions that cost-benefit analysts flaunt as fact, Priceless tells a ''gripping story about how solid science has been shoved to the backburner by bean counters with ideological blinders'' (In These Times). Ackerman and Heinzerling argue that decisions about health and safety should be made ''to reflect not economists' numbers, but democratic values, chosen on moral grounds. This is a vividly written book, punctuated by striking analogies, a good deal of outrage, and a nice dose of humor'' (Cass Sunstein, The New Republic). Essential reading for anyone concerned with the future of human health and environmental protection, Priceless ''shines a bright light on obstacles that stand in the way of good government decisions''.

Download or read book Priceless written by Robert K. Wittman and published by Crown. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wall Street Journal called him “a living legend.” The London Times dubbed him “the most famous art detective in the world.” In Priceless, Robert K. Wittman, the founder of the FBI’s Art Crime Team, pulls back the curtain on his remarkable career for the first time, offering a real-life international thriller to rival The Thomas Crown Affair. Rising from humble roots as the son of an antique dealer, Wittman built a twenty-year career that was nothing short of extraordinary. He went undercover, usually unarmed, to catch art thieves, scammers, and black market traders in Paris and Philadelphia, Rio and Santa Fe, Miami and Madrid. In this page-turning memoir, Wittman fascinates with the stories behind his recoveries of priceless art and antiquities: The golden armor of an ancient Peruvian warrior king. The Rodin sculpture that inspired the Impressionist movement. The headdress Geronimo wore at his final Pow-Wow. The rare Civil War battle flag carried into battle by one of the nation’s first African-American regiments. The breadth of Wittman’s exploits is unmatched: He traveled the world to rescue paintings by Rockwell and Rembrandt, Pissarro, Monet and Picasso, often working undercover overseas at the whim of foreign governments. Closer to home, he recovered an original copy of the Bill of Rights and cracked the scam that rocked the PBS series Antiques Roadshow. By the FBI’s accounting, Wittman saved hundreds of millions of dollars worth of art and antiquities. He says the statistic isn’t important. After all, who’s to say what is worth more --a Rembrandt self-portrait or an American flag carried into battle? They're both priceless. The art thieves and scammers Wittman caught run the gamut from rich to poor, smart to foolish, organized criminals to desperate loners. The smuggler who brought him a looted 6th-century treasure turned out to be a high-ranking diplomat. The appraiser who stole countless heirlooms from war heroes’ descendants was a slick, aristocratic con man. The museum janitor who made off with locks of George Washington's hair just wanted to make a few extra bucks, figuring no one would miss what he’d filched. In his final case, Wittman called on every bit of knowledge and experience in his arsenal to take on his greatest challenge: working undercover to track the vicious criminals behind what might be the most audacious art theft of all.

Book excerpt: Jeshurun. . .a novel set against a backdrop of political intrigue and treason. America's first female president, Jazelle Damon, has placed control of the U.S. armed forces under the United Nations. Her husband, Lucis, former U.S. president and now UN secretary general, demands that Israel relinquish Judea and Samaria to the Palestinians. This could cost the nation of Israel its very existence. John Redden, youngest general in UN history, has been assigned to command the UN forces and remove all Jews from Judea and Samaria. To persuade them to leave peacefully, Redden meets with Rabbi Levy, an influential leader in Judea. The rabbi's daughter, Rachel, agrees to show him the holy sites in hopes of convincing him his mission is wrong. Rachel Levy is unlike any woman Redden has ever known. The wide chasm of religion, ethics and belief systems, however, creates impregnable walls, but he cannot let go of his desire to have her for himself. Redden learns the secretary general may have a personal bias against Israel, and financial kickbacks from the Arab world become visible. Has he been sent to bring stability to the region, or does his employer want to create Auschwitz-type borders around Israel to further the Arabs' goal of annihilating the Jews once and for all? Before the final stages of the attack are set in motion, John Redden is forced to make a decision he never thought possible. Will he be a great general or a great man? He cannot be both. Marlena Ariel Geren was born in Split, Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia). Raised in Berlin, Germany, she attended school there, moved to the U.S. in 1991 and has been an American citizen since 1996. She traveled on location and spent three years doing research for this novel.

It is also about those I have met and friends I have found along the way. Some poems are about domestic abuse, Christianity and God, some are about love, hurt and pain, romance. I hope you enjoy these poems I have written and that you can relate to what I am saying through them. All for the love of Poetry Best wishes, David J. I am including a very deep poem here... It it called "A Woman of Strength" I need to tell you a story about a woman I know, Listen closely to this story as I let it flow, Alone in her room in the dark as the tears fall, Thinking about her life and how she gave it her all. Her mind has been so abused along with her face, With the black and blue marks, her swollen eyes, leaving only a trace, The hurt and pain from his hand, leaving the scars within, The tears fall from her eyes leaving her with nothing. How she tries to smile but the pain gets in the way, So many times Ive tried to tell her not to stay, But she stayed anyway thinking everything would be fine, Knowing hed be home soon, as she walked that thin line. Finally he came home and again she started to shake, So scared as you thought, how much more can you take? He raised his hand to you once again as you hid with fear, Wishing so hard it would all stop, including the tears. Once again, alone in your room, with your head in your hands, As the blood dripped down your face right where you stand, This time it went too far, as you fell to the floor, As you stood up, looking at him face to face, You told him to go to hell, walking out and forever closing the door.
