Book Beyond the Dreams of Avarice

Download or read book Beyond the Dreams of Avarice written by Walter Besant and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1895, a dying man instructs his son to reject their family fortune because of its evil origins and his grandfather’s unsavory past. Yet, his son is enamored by the riches and its potential for good. John Calvert was a successful engineer and heir to a large fortune. While on his deathbed, he tells his son, Dr. Lucian Calvert, the truth about their family’s money and how it was acquired. His dying wish is that Lucian never touches a dime or use it for personal gain. John fails to leave a will, which causes multiple “family members” to stake their claim on his wealth. Despite his father’s haunting words, Lucian becomes engaged in a battle for his highly-coveted estate. Beyond the Dream of Avarice is a cautionary tale about status, wealth and greed. Walter Besant provides an insightful look at the corruptive nature of money and power. Even with a clear warning, man can still fall victim to the desires of the flesh. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Beyond the Dream of Avarice is both modern and readable.

Book Representing Avarice in Late Renaissance France

Download or read book Representing Avarice in Late Renaissance France written by Jonathan Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did people talk so much about avarice in late Renaissance France, nearly a century before Moliere's famous comedy, L'Avare? As wars and economic crises ravaged France on the threshold of modernity, avarice was said to be flourishing as never before. Yet by the late sixteenth century, a number of French writers would argue that in some contexts, avaricious behaviour was not straightforwardly sinful or harmful. Considerations of social rank, gender, object pursued, time, and circumstance led some to question age-old beliefs. Traditionally reviled groups (rapacious usurers, greedy lawyers, miserly fathers, covetous women) might still exhibit unmistakable signs of avarice -- but perhaps not invariably, in an age of shifting social, economic and intellectual values. Across a large, diverse corpus of French texts, Jonathan Patterson shows how a range of flexible genres nourished by humanism tended to offset traditional condemnation of avarice and avares with innovative, mitigating perspectives, arising from subjective experience. In such writings, an avaricious disposition could be re-described as something less vicious, excusable, or even expedient. In this word history of avarice, close readings of well-known authors (Marguerite de Navarre, Ronsard, Montaigne), and of their lesser-known contemporaries are connected to broader socio-economic developments of the late French Renaissance (c.1540-1615). The final chapter situates key themes in relation to Moliere's L'Avare. As such, Representing Avarice in Late Renaissance France newly illuminates debates about avarice within broader cultural preoccupations surrounding gender, enrichment and status in early modern France.

It uses case studies to argue that professional resource managers do not take responsibility for the social and environmental consequences of their decisions on the often vulnerable indigenous communities they affect. It also discusses the invisibility of indigenous people' values and knowledge within traditional resource management. It offers a new approach to social impact assessment methods which are more participatory and empowering. The book employs a range of case studies from Australia, North America and Norway.

Book The Ballad of Tom Dooley

Download or read book The Ballad of Tom Dooley written by Sharyn McCrumb and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of Tom Dooley is a literary triumph—what began as a fictional re-telling of the historical account of one of the most famous mountain ballads of all time became an astonishing revelation of the real culprit responsible for the murder of Laura Foster Hang down your head, Tom Dooley...The folk song, made famous by the Kingston Trio, recounts a tragedy in the North Carolina mountains after the Civil War. Laura Foster, a simple country girl, was murdered and her lover Tom Dula was hanged for the crime. The sensational elements in the case attracted national attention: a man and his beautiful, married lover accused of murdering the other-woman; the former governor of North Carolina spearheading the defense; and a noble gesture from the prisoner on the eve of his execution, saving the woman he really loved. With the help of historians, lawyers, and researchers, Sharyn McCrumb visited the actual sites, studied the legal evidence, and uncovered a missing piece of the story that will shock those who think they already know what happened—and may also bring belated justice to an innocent man. What seemed at first to be a sordid tale of adultery and betrayal was transformed by the new discoveries into an Appalachian Wuthering Heights. Tom Dula and Ann Melton had a profound romance spoiled by the machinations of their servant, Pauline Foster. Bringing to life the star-crossed lovers of this mountain tragedy, Sharyn McCrumb gifts understanding and compassion to her compelling tales of Appalachia, and solidifies her status as one of today's great Southern writers.

Book Shakespeare and Early Modern Political Thought

Download or read book Shakespeare and Early Modern Political Thought written by David Armitage and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collaborative volume to place Shakespeare's works within the landscape of early modern political thought. Until recently, literary scholars have not generally treated Shakespeare as a participant in the political thought of his time, unlike his contemporaries Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser and Philip Sidney. At the same time, historians of political thought have rarely turned their attention to major works of poetry and drama. A distinguished international and interdisciplinary team of contributors examines the full range of Shakespeare's writings in order to challenge conventional interpretations of plays central to the canon, such as Hamlet; open up novel perspectives on works rarely considered to be political, such as the Sonnets; and focus on those that have been largely neglected, such as The Merry Wives of Windsor. The result is a coherent and challenging portrait of Shakespeare's distinctive engagement with the characteristic questions of early modern political thought.
