Book The Illusion of Inclusion

Download or read book The Illusion of Inclusion written by Rodolfo Rosales and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many observers, the 1981 election of Henry Cisneros as mayor of San Antonio, Texas, represented the culminating victory in the Chicano community's decades-long struggle for inclusion in the city's political life. Yet, nearly twenty years later, inclusion is still largely an illusion for many working-class and poor Chicanas and Chicanos, since business interests continue to set the city's political and economic priorities. In this book, Rodolfo Rosales offers the first in-depth history of the Chicano community's struggle for inclusion in the political life of San Antonio during the years 1951 to 1991, drawn from interviews with key participants as well as archival research. He focuses on the political and organizational activities of the Chicano middle class in the context of post-World War II municipal reform and how it led ultimately to independent political representation for the Chicano community. Of special interest is his extended discussion of the role of Chicana middle-class women as they gained greater political visibility in the 1980s.

Book University Health System at 100

Download or read book University Health System at 100 written by George B. Hernández Jr. and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the twentieth century, South Texas was a melting of troops training for deployment in World War I and thousands of refugees fleeing the Mexican Revolution. With the influx of immigrants and injured veterans returning from the war, the area was in desperate need of a charity hospital to serve the burgeoning community. The city of San Antonio and Bexar County each contributed half the funding to build the Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital, named for a socially conscious county judge and Texas state senator. The Green hospital filled a critical need and was completed just in time to care for victims of the 1918 flu epidemic. One hundred years later, the hospital is one of many in the University Health System, which continues to fulfill the diverse health care needs of South Texas.University Health System at 100 chronicles the compelling history of a nationally recognized teaching hospital and its network of outpatient healthcare centers with archival photographs and extended captions. Highlights include the 1955 creation of the property tax funded Bexar County Hospital District; the 1968 founding of the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio; now called UT Health San Antonio; and the 1999 opening of the Texas Diabetes Institute. The book also looks ahead to the next one hundred years as medical advancements and concerns and the needs of the South Texas region continue to evolve. Whatever the future of health care holds, the University Health System aims to continue the mission that has guided it from the beginning—to treat all those in need in the community with compassion, respect and skill.

Book The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail 1858 1861

Download or read book The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail 1858 1861 written by Glen Sample Ely and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the antebellum frontier in Texas, from the Red River to El Paso, a raw and primitive country punctuated by chaos, lawlessness, and violence. During this time, the federal government and the State of Texas often worked at cross-purposes, their confused and contradictory policies leaving settlers on their own to deal with vigilantes, lynchings, raiding American Indians, and Anglo-American outlaws. Before the Civil War, the Texas frontier was a sectional transition zone where southern ideology clashed with western perspectives and where diverse cultures with differing worldviews collided. This is also the tale of the Butterfield Overland Mail, which carried passengers and mail west from St. Louis to San Francisco through Texas. While it operated, the transcontinental mail line intersected and influenced much of the region's frontier history. Through meticulous research, including visits to all the sites he describes, Glen Sample Ely uncovers the fascinating story of the Butterfield Overland Mail in Texas. Until the U.S. Army and Butterfield built West Texas’s infrastructure, the region’s primitive transportation network hampered its development. As Ely shows, the Overland Mail Company and the army jump-started growth, serving together as both the economic engine and the advance agent for European American settlement. Used by soldiers, emigrants, freighters, and stagecoaches, the Overland Mail Road was the nineteenth-century equivalent of the modern interstate highway system, stimulating passenger traffic, commercial freighting, and business. Although most of the action takes place within the Lone Star State, this is in many respects an American tale. The same concerns that challenged frontier residents confronted citizens across the country. Written in an engaging style that transports readers to the rowdy frontier and the bustle of the overland road, The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail offers a rare view of Texas’s antebellum past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death of a Texas Ranger is the thrilling, action-packed story of the murder of Texas Ranger John Green by Cesario Menchaca, one of three Rangers of Mexican descent under Green’s command. Immediately word spread that the killing may have been the botched outcome of a contract taken out on Menchaca’s life by the notorious Gabriel Marnoch, a local naturalist who had run up against the law himself. But was it? Much more than just a story about a tragic frontier killing, it is the story of an era. The events leading up to the murder and Green’s son’s decades’ long quest for justice for his father’s killer exemplify the chaotic frontier society in Texas after the Civil War, a time fraught with political turmoil and cultural clashes. Amidst that chaos, the virgin landscape of Texas was a magnet to those interested in the natural sciences in the nineteenth century, an era often referred to as the Age of Darwin. The clash between the seemingly pastoral landscape with its offerings for science and the brutal history of the region ties this very readable regional history into the larger American story.
