Book Between Shadows and Noise

Download or read book Between Shadows and Noise written by Amber Jamilla Musser and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Between Shadows and Noise Amber Jamilla Musser theorizes sensation as a Black feminist method for aesthetic interpretation and criticism that uses the knowledges held by the body to access the unrepresentable. Thinking through Blackness, empire, and colonialism, Musser examines artworks ranging from Ming Smith’s Flamingo Fandango, Jordan Peele’s Us, and Katherine Dunham’s Shango to Samita Sinha’s This ember state, Titus Kaphar’s A Pillow for Fragile Fictions, and Teresita Fernández’s Puerto Rico (Burned) 6. She engages with these works from an embodied situatedness to grapple with the questions and sensations of racialization and difference that the works produce. Throughout, Musser rethinks how we consider the relationships between race, representation, and politics by dwelling in those spaces and concepts that elude Western norms of representation, objectivity, and logic. In so doing, she explores ways of being and knowing that exceed overdetermined parameters while offering a blueprint for sensing, imagining, and living otherwise.

Book excerpt: The book's title speaks to many frequencies of equal intensities; the author is also sensitive to the phrase's colloquial association with drowning out the fragmentation and cultural distance permeating the United States today. Many forms of art, including music and photography, offer a platform for commonality; Ralph Gibson's succinct introduction places these two related art forms in context in Diamond's work. Through the high-key light permeating much of his way of seeing, complemented in the extreme by his attention to gestures in the shadows of the night, Diamond fosters a brief connection between the world, himself, and the viewer through each carefully composed frame.

Book Sensual Excess

  • Author : Amber Jamilla Musser
  • Publisher : NYU Press

Download or read book Sensual Excess written by Amber Jamilla Musser and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagines black and brown sensuality to develop new modes of knowledge production In Sensual Excess, Amber Jamilla Musser imagines epistemologies of sensuality that emerge from fleshiness. To do so, she works against the framing of black and brown bodies as sexualized, objectified, and abject, and offers multiple ways of thinking with and through sensation and aesthetics. Each chapter draws our attention to particular aspects of pornotropic capture that black and brown bodies must always negotiate. Though these technologies differ according to the nature of their encounters with white supremacy, together they add to our understanding of the ways that structures of domination produce violence and work to contain bodies and pleasures within certain legible parameters. To do so, Sensual Excess analyzes moments of brown jouissance that exceed these constraints. These ruptures illuminate multiple epistemologies of selfhood and sensuality that offer frameworks for minoritarian knowledge production which is designed to enable one to sit with uncertainty. Through examinations of installations and performances like Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, Kara Walker’s A Subtlety, Patty Chang’s In Love and Nao Bustamante’s Neapolitan, Musser unpacks the relationships between racialized sexuality and consumption to interrogate foundational concepts in psychoanalytic theory, critical race studies, feminism, and queer theory. In so doing, Sensual Excess offers a project of knowledge production focused not on mastery, but on sensing and imagining otherwise, whatever and wherever that might be.

Book excerpt: Libby Madsen, professional massage therapist and co-owner of the luxurious Dharma Inspired Day Spa, has probably heard it all. During what she thinks of as ‘tabletop confessions’ her clients often talk about way more of their personal lives than she really wants to hear. So when a regular, Maggie Crenshaw, talks about how her daughter went away on a camping trip with friends, it’s just so much chatter. But when Maggie says Isobel didn’t return home on time, is not answering her phone, and that the young woman is diabetic and really needs her meds. Libby offers to pick up the medications at Maggie’s house and deliver them—she and her Labrador puppy, Shadow, are going camping in the same area and it’s no trouble at all. Except when Libby and Shadow arrive at the campground, Isobel is nowhere to be found, and no one there has seen her or the group of friends she claimed to be traveling with. Libby enlists the help of handsome Forest Ranger Greg Lawson, but even he can’t find anyone who has seen the girl. The fact that she’s now been without her insulin for several days is worrisome, and Greg initiates a Search and Rescue operation. Libby and Shadow join Greg and the volunteers to search the adjoining camping areas. Some shady characters and a few clues do turn up. But no Isobel. Libby becomes convinced that something more sinister is going on and she’s determined to find out what has happened, little knowing that her own life may be in danger as she gets too close to the truth. Praise for Jennifer J. Morgan’s Libby Madsen cozy mystery series: “Readers know what a sucker I am for dogs, and the Libby Madsen mysteries are some of the best. Morgan is destined to be one of the brightest new stars in the cozy mystery scene!” – Connie Shelton, USA Today bestselling author

Book Shadows of Evil the vampires among us

Download or read book Shadows of Evil the vampires among us written by Patrick Thomas and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are vampires among us in a shadow world that has its subtle hooks into organized crime itself, as well as practically every major business, governmental, cultural, and religious institution in existence. Subtle, influencing rather than controlling, and ancient, it predates most if not all of the present-day institutions it influences. And evil. No shades of gray here. No redeeming social merit. Most of these vampires are educated, refined and charming, but as pure in their evil as the foulest of their bloodsucking kindred whose transformed faces match their twisted souls. A world of shadows; shadows of evil. When a maverick who prefers the twisted, bloodsucking condition of the classical vampire becomes too powerful to be controlled, a wave of evil is unleashed.
