Book excerpt: From legendary playwright August Wilson comes the powerful, stunning dramatic bestseller that won him critical acclaim, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize. Troy Maxson is a strong man, a hard man. He has had to be to survive. Troy Maxson has gone through life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world Troy Maxson has learned to deal with the only way he can, a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less. This is a modern classic, a book that deals with the impossibly difficult themes of race in America, set during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. Now an Academy Award-winning film directed by and starring Denzel Washington, along with Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Viola Davis.

Book Between the Fences

Download or read book Between the Fences written by Tony Hefner and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something at the Texas detention facility is terribly wrong, and Tony Hefner knows it. But the guards are repeatedly instructed not to speak of anything they witness. In the Rio Grande Valley, one of the most poverty-stricken areas in the United States, good jobs are scarce and the detention facility pays the best wages for a hundred miles. The guards follow orders and keep quiet. For six years, Tony Hefner was a security guard at the Port Isabel Service Processing Center, one of the largest immigration detention centers in America, and witnessed alarming corruption and violations of basic human rights. Officers preyed upon the very people whom they are sworn to protect. On behalf of the 1,100 men, women, and children residing there on an average day, and the 1,500 new undocumented immigrants who pass through its walls every month, this is the story of the systematic sexual, physical, financial, and drug-related abuses of detainees by guards.

Download or read book Between Fences written by Gregory K. Dreicer and published by . This book was released on 1996-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looked over but often overlooked, fences have played an essential role in the American building tradition from the time of colonization. Skirting the nation's private and public spaces, they define our borders and boundaries while playing an integral part in the visual environment. Thousands of types of fences have been created, and millions of miles of fencing have been constructed across the American landscape. Lavishly illustrated, between fences assembles a distinguished group of architects, theorists, and historians who address this fundamental yet neglected aspect of our built environment. Together, they examine how fences reflect the way Americans think about their land and how they relate to those who share it with them. Included are provocative essays by Diana Balmori on landscape and the hedge, Philip Dole on the American home and the picket fence, Gregory K. Dreicer on the ubiquitous chain-link fence, Gary Kulik on the worm fence, John Brinkerhof Jackson on barbed wire fences, Anne M. Lange on Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall", and Anne Stillman on fences and the settlement of New England.

Book These Wilds Beyond Our Fences

Download or read book These Wilds Beyond Our Fences written by Bayo Akomolafe and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tackling some of the world’s most profound questions through the intimate lens of fatherhood, Bayo Akomolafe embarks on a journey of discovery as he maps the contours of the spaces between himself and his three-year-old daughter, Alethea. In a narrative that manages to be both intricate and unguarded, he discovers that something as commonplace as becoming a father is a cosmic event of unprecedented proportions. Using this realization as a touchstone, he is led to consider the strangeness of his own soul, contemplate the myths and rituals of modernity, ask questions about food and justice, ponder what it means to be human, evaluate what we can do about climate change, and wonder what our collective yearnings for a better world tell us about ourselves. These Wilds Beyond Our Fences is a passionate attempt to make sense of our disconnection in a world where it is easy to feel untethered and lost. It is a father’s search for meaning, for a place of belonging, and for reassurance that the world will embrace and support our children once we are gone.

Book When the Fences Come Down

Download or read book When the Fences Come Down written by Genevieve Siegel-Hawley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we provide equal educational opportunity to an increasingly diverse, highly urbanized student population is one of the central concerns facing our nation. As Genevieve Siegel-Hawley argues in this thought-provoking book, within our metropolitan areas we are currently allowing a labyrinthine system of school-district boundaries to divide students--and opportunities--along racial and economic lines. Rather than confronting these realities, though, most contemporary educational policies focus on improving schools by raising academic standards, holding teachers and students accountable through test performance, and promoting private-sector competition. Siegel-Hawley takes us into the heart of the metropolitan South to explore what happens when communities instead focus squarely on overcoming the educational divide between city and suburb. Based on evidence from metropolitan school desegregation efforts in Richmond, Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, between 1990 and 2010, Siegel-Hawley uses quantitative methods and innovative mapping tools both to underscore the damages wrought by school-district boundary lines and to raise awareness about communities that have sought to counteract them. She shows that city-suburban school desegregation policy is related to clear, measurable progress on both school and housing desegregation. Revisiting educational policies that in many cases were abruptly halted--or never begun--this book will spur an open conversation about the creation of the healthy, integrated schools and communities critical to our multiracial future.
