Download or read book Jerusalem and Babylon written by Johannes van Oort and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas, until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God. Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of his City of God, and of his doctrine of the two cities. Making use of one of the recently discovered letters of Augustine in Chapter 3 the author describes the City of God as an apology and as a catechetical work. Chapter 4 provides an investigation into the possible sources of Augustine's doctrine of the two cities in Manichaeism, in (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa and Philo, and in the works of Tyconius. The idea of two antithetical cities proves to be present most clearly in writings in which, closely related to Jewish thinking, archaic Christian concepts occupy an important place. In a final chapter some pertinent remarks are made on Jewish and Jewish-Christian influences on pre-Augustinian Christianity in Africa.
Download or read book The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem written by Oded Lipschitz and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of the demise of the kingdom of Judah at the end of the 6th century B.C.E., the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the exile of the elite to Babylon, and the reshaping of the territory of the new province of Judah, culminating at the end of the century with the first return of exiles--all have been subjects of intense scrutiny during the last decade. Lipschits takes into account the biblical textual evidence, the results of archaeological research, and the reports of Babylonian and Egyptian sources and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the evidence for the history of this 100-year-long era. He provides a lucid historical survey that will, no doubt, become the baseline for all future studies of this era.

Download or read book Judeans in Babylonia written by Tero Alstola and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Judeans in Babylonia, Tero Alstola presents a comprehensive investigation of deportees in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. By using cuneiform documents as his sources, he offers the first book-length social historical study of the Babylonian Exile, commonly regarded as a pivotal period in the development of Judaism. The results are considered in the light of the wider Babylonian society and contrasted against a comparison group of Neirabian deportees. Studying texts from the cities and countryside and tracking developments over time, Alstola shows that there was notable diversity in the Judeans’ socio-economic status and integration into Babylonian society.
Download or read book Babylon Or Jerusalem written by John J Sweetman and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation shows the climax of the battle between God and Satan - of good and evil. Two cities demonstrate the difference between the Kingdom of God and that of Satan - Jerusalem and Babylon. We are told that Babylon will be destroyed but Jerusalem will thrive and we are commanded to leave Babylon. But it is clear that many of God's people today still live in 'Babylon' without being aware of it. It is vital, therefore, that we understand what the term 'Babylon' means and this is what this book seeks to clarify.Part One reveals the roots and character of that 'Babylon', applying the lessons of Nimrod and the Tower of Babel and shows how the Church is dominated by its character, outlining the ways in which God's people can become trapped into becoming citizens of Babylon. It traces the development of the spirit of 'Babylon' in the early Church and how the writers of the letters in the New Testament combatted it. It also shows the parallel with today, and considers the final demise of Babylon.Part Two reveals the roots and character of 'Jerusalem' - it proposes that we should develop a different relationship with God and His people, looking at biblical characters and New Testament practices - throughout supported by the relevant passages from Scripture. It suggests that the future expectations that spiritual Jerusalem will fulfil can be enjoyed now if we are prepared to be obedient to the Holy Spirit. The Appendices provide a thorough exposure of the practices of tithing, the use of paid workers, and the error of leadership that perpetuates the spirit of 'Babylon' and stifles the spirit of 'Jerusalem'.
