Book excerpt: The United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, is in trouble.America is known as the most powerful nation on earth, economically and militarily. But can she still lay claim to this title? And for how long? The author, Mike Huerta, believes that his beloved nation is sliding down a slippery hole of ruination that it may never be able to crawl out of. With budget deficits, mounting national debt, deteriorating educational system and values, and the sense of ¿entitlement¿ that the majority of the American public seem to favor than earning their own keep, he sees a pattern of devastation that could quite possibly happen if they, as a nation, don¿t start changing their ways. But he proposes ways to combat these societal maladies, and as president, if the people so choose him, he will perform his utmost to bring back America¿s glory as its fearless and incorruptible leader.

Download or read book Findings from the Survey on Officer Careers 1996 written by June T. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report summarizes findings from the 1996 Survey on officer Careers (SOC). SOC is a continuation of the Longitudinal Research on Officer Careers (LROC) survey research program. The LROC program called for similar surveys to be mailed to a longitudinal sample of company grade officers each year over a number of years. Surveys were administered in 1988, 1989,1990, and 1992. The SOC was first administered in May of 1996. Samples for SOC included all officers who had responded to any of the LROC surveys and who were still on active duty, as well as a new randomly-drawn cross-sectional sample of officers at all ranks. This report summarizes findings for the new 1996 cross-sectional sample of officers. The SOC continues to provide data on the values, altitudes, family situations, and career experiences of Army officers who are serving in Army Competitive Category branches. SOC results will be used to test models of work, career, family, and personal factors that influence officers' career decisions. The SOC also provides a rich longitudinal database for examining the Army experience from a long-term perspective."--DTIC.

Book The Good Death

Download or read book The Good Death written by Marilyn Webb and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Death is the first full-scale examination of one of today's most complex issues: the profound change in the way Americans think about and confront death. Drawing on more than six years of firsthand research and reporting, noted journalist Marilyn Webb builds her account around intimate portraits of the dying themselves. She explains why some deaths become shockingly difficult--and needlessly painful--and how the struggles over end-of-life decisions can pit patient and family against hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, religious groups, and the law. But there is good news as well. Webb describes many extraordinary programs and individuals who are changing the face of dying. An abundant source of comfort and hope, The Good Death shows how the essential elements of humane--even uplifted--death are available to all of us, if we know what is possible, where to go for help, and how to prepare.

This fear drove middle-class couples to seek advice, both professional and popular, in order to strengthen their relationships. In Making Marriage Work, historian Kristin Celello offers an insightful and wide-ranging account of marriage and divorce in America in the twentieth century, focusing on the development of the idea of marriage as "work." Throughout, Celello illuminates the interaction of marriage and divorce over the century and reveals how the idea that marriage requires work became part of Americans' collective consciousness.

Book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19

Download or read book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19 written by Melanie Nolan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
