The author examines Keaton's image as star and public figure, drawing on information from interviews (including personal conversations with Keaton), feature pieces, press releases, books, photographs, posters, films, and reviews of films. Each chapter provides an overview of the significant events and influences in Keaton's life during a particular period, along with a thematic and stylistic analysis of that period's feature films, television movies, and photography. The film analyses include an examination of themes and technical elements such as cinematography, mise-en-scene, movement, editing, sound, acting, costumes, set, and narrative structures.

Download or read book The Diary of a Curious Man written by Patrick Black and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited with a Foreword by Leo de Freyne. It is impossible to write a synopsis of this book in terms of plot and themes. This is because it is a diary in form and, although cohesive, it has a myriad of themes. It is written over a period of twenty-six years and is set in six countries principally: Ireland, Spain, China, Poland, Estonia and the Sultanate of Oman. Other countries also appear: England, France, Germany, Russia and more. However, this is not a travel book, although travel is an important aspect of the book's structure. It is a story, though not a novel in the conventional sense of the word. The work is music-like in structure, with motifs reappearing both overtly and subtly. It is a work of philosophy, psychology, literary and art criticism, political and social commentary, and much more. The book is humorous too, and because all diarists take themselves somewhat seriously, some of the humour is not Patrick Black's intention.
Download or read book Children Defending their Human Rights Under the CRC Communications Procedure written by Sonja C. Grover and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a communication procedure as a key contributor to the realization of children’s Article 12 Convention on the Rights of the Child participation rights. Weaknesses in the current formulation of the CRC communication procedure (its first iteration since entry into force 14 April, 2014) are examined and suggestions for strengthening of the mechanism in various respects considered. Actual cases concerning children’s fundamental human rights in various domains and brought under various international human rights mechanisms are considered as hypothetical OP3-CRC communications/complaints. In addition certain domestic cases brought to the highest State Court are considered as hypothetical OP3-CRC communications brought after exhaustion of domestic remedies. In this way various significant weaknesses of the OP3-CRC are illustrated in a compelling meaningful case context and needed amendments highlighted.
Download or read book Collapse written by Vladislav M. Zubok and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major study of the collapse of the Soviet Union—showing how Gorbachev’s misguided reforms led to its demise “A deeply informed account of how the Soviet Union fell apart.”—Rodric Braithwaite, Financial Times “[A] masterly analysis.”—Joshua Rubenstein, Wall Street Journal In 1945 the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong with five thousand nuclear-tipped missiles and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the twentieth century. Thirty years on, Vladislav Zubok offers a major reinterpretation of the final years of the USSR, refuting the notion that the breakup of the Soviet order was inevitable. Instead, Zubok reveals how Gorbachev’s misguided reforms, intended to modernize and democratize the Soviet Union, deprived the government of resources and empowered separatism. Collapse sheds new light on Russian democratic populism, the Baltic struggle for independence, the crisis of Soviet finances—and the fragility of authoritarian state power.
