Book excerpt: Marj Charlier’s The Rebel Nun is based on the true story of Clotild, the daughter of a sixth-century king and his concubine, who leads a rebellion of nuns against the rising misogyny and patriarchy of the medieval church. At that time, women are afforded few choices in life: prostitution, motherhood, or the cloister. Only the latter offers them any kind of independence. By the end of the sixth century, even this is eroding as the church begins to eject women from the clergy and declares them too unclean to touch sacramental objects or even their priest-husbands. Craving the legitimacy thwarted by her bastard status, Clotild seeks to become the next abbess of the female Monastery of the Holy Cross, the most famous of the women’s cloisters of the early Middle Ages. When the bishop of Poitiers blocks her appointment and seeks to control the nunnery himself, Clotild masterminds an escape, leading a group of nuns on a dangerous pilgrimage to beg her royal relatives to intercede on their behalf. But the bishop refuses to back down, and a bloody battle ensues. Will Clotild and her sisters succeed with their quest, or will they face excommunication, possibly even death? In the only historical novel written about the incident, The Rebel Nun is a richly imagined story about a truly remarkable heroine.

Book The Best of Us

Download or read book The Best of Us written by Joyce Maynard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This haunting story, penned by a master wordsmith, is a reminder to savor every loved one and every day.' Booklist Indie Next Pick "For Reading Groups" From New York Times bestselling author Joyce Maynard, a memoir about discovering strength in the midst of great loss--"heart wrenching, inspiring, full of joy and tears and life." (Anne Lamott) In 2011, when she was in her late fifties, beloved author and journalist Joyce Maynard met the first true partner she had ever known. Jim wore a rakish hat over a good head of hair; he asked real questions and gave real answers; he loved to see Joyce shine, both in and out of the spotlight; and he didn't mind the mess she made in the kitchen. He was not the husband Joyce imagined, but he quickly became the partner she had always dreamed of. Before they met, both had believed they were done with marriage, and even after they married, Joyce resolved that no one could alter her course of determined independence. Then, just after their one-year wedding anniversary, her new husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. During the nineteen months that followed, as they battled his illness together, she discovered for the first time what it really meant to be a couple--to be a true partner and to have one. This is their story. Charting the course through their whirlwind romance, a marriage cut short by tragedy, and Joyce's return to singleness on new terms, The Best of Us is a heart-wrenching, ultimately life-affirming reflection on coming to understand true love through the experience of great loss.

Book Global Guyana

  • Author : Oneka LaBennett
  • Publisher : NYU Press

Download or read book Global Guyana written by Oneka LaBennett and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposes the global threat of environmental catastrophe and the forms of erasure that structure Caribbean women’s lives in the overlooked nation of Guyana Previously ranked among the hemisphere’s poorest countries, Guyana is becoming a global leader in per capita oil production, a shift which promises to profoundly transform the nation. This sea change presents a unique opportunity to dissect both the environmental impacts of modern- world resource extraction and the obscured yet damaging ways in which intersectional race and gender formations circumscribe Caribbean women’s lives. Drawing from archival research and oral history, and examining mass-mediated flashpoints across the African and Indian diasporas—including Rihanna’s sonic routes, ethnic conflict reportage, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking—Global Guyana repositions this marginalized nation as a nexus of social and economic activity which drives popular culture and ideas about sexuality while reshaping the geopolitical and literal topography of the Caribbean region. Oneka LaBennett employs the powerful analytic of the pointer broom to disentangle the symbiotic relationship between Guyanese women’s gendered labor and global racial capitalism. She illuminates how both oil extraction and sand export are implicated in a well-established practice of pillaging the Caribbean’s natural resources while masking the ecological consequences that disproportionately affect women and children. Global Guyana uncovers how ecological erosion and gendered violence are entrenched in extractive industries emanating from this often-effaced but pivotal country. Sounding the alarm on the portentous repercussions that ambitious development spells out for the nation’s people and its geographical terrain, LaBennett issues a warning for all of us about the looming threat of global environmental calamity.

Book China S Greatest Statesman

Download or read book China S Greatest Statesman written by Roy K. McCall and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huaian born Zhou Enlai was contemporary Chinas greatest statesman, spymaster and negotiator - the one Henry Kissinger could not out-negotiate. The Peoples Republic of China would not exist today without Zhous skill as communicator and administrator. Yet Zhou had one fatal flaw which cost him his adopted children, his colleagues and the career of Xi Zhongxun - father of President Xi Jinping. While Zhou left Huaian, another group came to his birthplace to serve through medicine, education and evangelism. Chinas revolutionaries gained power; the missionaries - influence. Influence transcended power, and contrasted power politics vs. quiet service. This book can also be read backwards - through the index, which organizes over 100 footnotes and historical details. For example, President Xi Jinxings father, despite rescuing survivors of the Long March, was three decades later unfairly associated with the Gao Gang affair and denounced by the people he rescued. Another side story is the role of former missionary retreat, Kuling on Lu Shan. On Lu Shan George C. Marshall negotiated with Jiang Kaishek and Zhou Enlai. At a Lu Shan conference during the Great Leap Forward, Mao Zedong joked about being overweight and called his second son crazy.
