Download or read book 300 Years of the French in Old Mines written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The village of Old Mines is the oldest settlement in the state of Missouri. Lead miners were in Old Mines as early as 1719. The founding of Old Mines in 1723 coincides with the land grant awarded to Philippe Francois Renault by French authorities on June 26, 1723, to mine lead. Thus, the oldest village in Missouri began as a mining town. In 2023, the village marks three hundred years of the French in Old Mines. This book narrates the history of people in remote Louisiana and how they have kept alive a French heritage of culture and customs. The history of Old Mines is tightly bound to the Catholic faith the French settlers brought with them, the parish they founded, and the church, schools, rectories, and convents they built. The decade of the 2020s is filled with over twenty anniversaries to be marked and celebrated in the oldest mining town in Missouri, itself marking its Bicentennial in 2021. This is not a scholarly writing of history; it is a thirty-chapter narrative, grounded in research, of the continual presence of the French in Old Mines for three hundred years.

Her writing has become well loved, well read, and often studied. This book reprints complete book reviews and excerpts from review essays on the works of Flannery O'Connor that appeared in newspapers and periodicals during the author's writing life (1945-64) and after her early death. The more than four hundred edited reviews are prefaced with a substantial Introduction that situates O'Connor within the critical milieu of post-war American letters and Southern literary tradition, and provides an overview of contemporary critical responses to her collected stories, novels, and occasional pieces. An important resource for scholars of O'Connor and of Southern literature generally, this volume reveals much about her early reception and the continuing relevance of her work.

Download or read book A History of Cardiac Surgery written by Ugo Filippo Tesler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of cardiac surgery is generally considered to be the successful repair of a wound of the heart that took place on the 7th of September 1896 in Frankfurt am Main. This operation put an end to the widespread belief that nature had set the heart beyond the limits of surgery. The successive development of heart surgery moved together with other advances that were rapidly taking place in various fields of medicine and surgery and which, already in the first half of the 20th century, had allowed surgical pioneers to successfully correct a number of congenital and acquired heart diseases by adopting closed-heart techniques. Undoubtedly, the most notable progress in the history of cardiac surgery took place between the second half of the 1950s and the end of the 1960s with the introduction of extra-corporeal circulation that allowed surgeons to perform interventions under direct vision within the bloodless heart chambers. This fundamental technological innovation fostered the development of surgical procedures that are still adopted to this day. Among these that must be mentioned are the correction of complex congenital heart diseases, the designing and creation of implantable prosthetic heart valves, the introduction of coronary artery surgery, the repair of severe diseases of the aorta, the commencement of heart transplantation, and the first implantation of an artificial heart. This book narrates these fascinating and sometimes dramatic events, as well as detailing some of the greatest pioneers of cardiac surgery.

Download or read book Leche De Coyote written by Jerry P. Martinez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of this book is the story of my life followed by the life of my ancestors. I start with my own story, not a story of a hero. Its not a about a famous baseball player that I envisioned in my dreams. My story doesnt involve any spy adventures like the books I enjoy reading. Rather my life I share with you is about a boy born in the hills of Northern New Mexico. Its about a kid that lived the first five years of my life in one of the most impoverished counties in the United States. My story recognizes the important role my mother Fedelina, played in my life. She gave me and my siblings the opportunity to be educated. Because of her efforts I became educated in the Catholic School system. Because of her foresight I grew up in Santa Cruz, New Mexico, and became educated in the Catholic tradition. Its about a person that carried through his Mothers wishes. The world she opened led me to become one of the first members of the Martinezs clan to get a College degree. Its about a career that starts in the New Mexico State capitol and winds up in the California Aerospace Industry. Its about a person that is proud of his heritage, proud of his family, and proud of his country. My life has been driven by a philosophy learned from the experiences of others. I recognized the importance of learned experiences so I embraced what they shared with me. I adopted their experiences as my own. I lost my father at an early age so I really couldnt use him as a model for learning. I listened to the elders where ever and whenever the occasion presented itself. I learned to avoid the bad and accept what I perceived to be good. Those of my parents; Andres and Fedelina follow my own story. The others that follow are those of their parents and grandparents. I have enjoyed doing research on them, and it has been especially rewarding to actually put all these stories on paper. My family comprising of both the Martinez Clan and the Archuletas number in the hundreds. Papatin and Mama Ignacita had thirteen children; the Archuletas Papa Esquipula and Mama Aleja had seven children. Without a doubt some of these relatives can share much more interesting memoirs than mine. I have knowledge of many interesting stories about them. My uncles served our Country during World War II as some of my older cousins did. Im sure they can relate to some very interesting experiences during those times. Documentation that contains historical data on our ancestors is available for those interested in Genealogy. The Catholic Churches and missions throughout the southwest have kept records dating back to the colonization of the New World. Other agencies like the United States Census Bureau, The New Mexico Genealogical society and the Organized Church of the Latter Day Saints also maintain information on settlers coming to live in the New World. Information exists on almost every US citizen; all it takes is hours of research. Also in the past, information about ones ancestors was passed on either written or orally. Ancestors would keep records in Bibles or in books theyd written themselves. It was also very common for the family elders to repeat tales during campfire gatherings or around the dinner table. My first recollection of tales involving ancestors was my Grandma Ignacita talking about her side of the family. I remember these tales being told over and over. The story of my maternal grandfather, Luciano Herrera is one that I heard over and over. Mother used to repeat stories relating to him, to a point that I became familiar and intrigued with his life story. I started to do research on him only to discover that genealogy could be fascinating which lead me to do further research on my other ancestors. Ive documented much
Download or read book The Sonic Swagger of Elvis Presley written by Gary Parker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elvis Presley's clever manipulation of his numerous interests remains one of the music world's great marvels. His synthesis of country, rhythm & blues and gospel resulted in an inventive mixture of hair-raising rock & roll and balladry. This book focuses on the music of Presley's groundbreaking early years and includes a comprehensive analysis of every Presley recording session from the 1950s. Chapters show how Presley, with one foot in delta mud and the other in a country hoedown, teamed with Scotty Moore and Bill Black to fuse two distinctly American musical forms--country and blues--to form what would come to be known as "rockabilly." Also detailed is Presley's influence on music and how his contributions are still celebrated today.
