He was awarded many medals, diplomas and honors, including the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950.

Here, in the first full-length study of Russell's work on language throughout his long career, Keith Green shows that this is in fact not the case. In examining Russell's work, particularly from 1900 to 1950, Green exposes a repeated emphasis on, and turn to, linguistic considerations. Green considers how 'linguistics' and 'philosophy' were struggling in the twentieth century to define themselves and to create appropriate contemporary disciplines. They had much in common during certain periods, yet seemed to continue in almost total ignorance of one another. This negative relation has been noted in the past by Roy Harris, whose work provides some of the inspiration for the present book. Taking those two aspects, Green's aim here is to provide the first full-length consideration of Russell's varied work in language, and to read it in the context of developing contemporary (i.e. with Russell's work) linguistic theory. Book excerpt: by Ivor Grattan-Guinness Until twenty years ago the outline history of logicism was well known. Frege had had the important ideas, until he was eclipsed by Wittgenstein. Russell was important in publicising the former and tutoring the latter, and also for working with Moore in the conversion of British philosophy from neo-Hegelianism to the new analytic tradition in the 1900s, but his own work on logic and especially logicism was very muddled. Around that time Russell, who was still alive, sold his manuscripts to McMaster University in Canada, and interest in his achievements in logic began to develop, especially after his death in 1970. Scholars found thousands of folios of unpublished holograph awaiting their attention, and also hundreds of pertinent letters (both in the Russell Archives and elsewhere in certain recipients' collections). Various facets of his work came to light for the first time, and others -which could have been gleaned from carefully reading of the published sources- gained new publicity from the evidence revealed in manuscripts. Even the technical passage work, which constitutes the unread majority of the Principia mathematica (1910-13) of Russell and Whitehead, began to receive a little respectful scrutiny. It turned out that Russell had done several pioneering things. While indeed often incoherent in reference and content, they comprised major forays into the new mathematical logic, of which he turned out to be a major founder: some are even of interest to modem studies.

It consisted of: Mark van Atten, Eric Audureau, Julien Bertrand, Paola Cantù, Gabriella Crocco, Eva-Maria Engelen, Amélie Mertens and Robin Rollinger. And then there was a group of experts in Gödel studies and logic to whom the results of this ongoing research were presented and with whom they were discussed every now and then. This group consisted of: John W. Dawson Jr. and Cheryl Dawson, Akihiro Kanamori, Per Martin-Löf, Göran Sundholm and Richard Tieszen. For the conference the group of experts was enlarged by Eberhard Knobloch and Massimo Mugnai as authorities on Leibniz – to whom Gödel refers quite often – and by several Gödel-enthusiasts who gave us great pleasure by reacting to our call for papers. The transcriptions of notebooks IX, X, XI, and XII were only made accessible to the experts for their lectures at the conference even though not all of the transcriptions are yet ready for circulation or for publication.
