Book Constructing the World

Download or read book Constructing the World written by Omar W. Nasim and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to place Bertrand Russell's work on the problem of the external world into a particular philosophical and historical context. This context is provided by considering a Controversy that raged among philosophers of various stripes in England between 1904 through to 1916. Central to this Controversy is G.F. Stout's "Proto-Realism," which was informed by the Brentaman realist tradition. From this dialectic, which pivoted around Stout's doctrine, there developed and emerged the nascent British New Realism of Samuel Alexander and T.P. Nunn. I trace the development of various philosophical arguments that took place in this Controversy, especially those centered on the nature of sensible objects, and how they are connected to physical things in the world. Another important aspect of the Controversy is the explicit and conscious desire to avoid merely postulating the elements of the world in need of explanation. Certain significant aspects appear in relation to our understanding of Russell's work dealing with similar issues from this period. For one, I show that one gains a better understanding of the nature of Russell's "sense-data," as "real," "physical" and "ultimate constituents" of the world. I will also examine the significance and distinguishing features of Russell's method of logical construction, especially in contrast to Stout's "ideal constructions," and other psychological constructions advanced in this Controversy. Finally, I believe a better appreciation and understanding of Russell's insistence that philosophers examining such issues ought to be familiar with the developments of mathematics and mathematical logic, can be provided by highlighting certain analogies between the way issues were construed in the Controversy and the way specific problems were addressed in the nineteenth century developments of mathematics.

Book Bertrand Russell s Life and Legacy

Download or read book Bertrand Russell s Life and Legacy written by Peter Stone and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost five decades after his death, there is still ample reason to pay attention to the life and legacy of Bertrand Russell. This is true not only because of his role as one of the founders of analytic philosophy, but also because of his important place in twentieth-century history as an educator, public intellectual, critic of organized religion, humanist, and peace activist. The papers in this anthology explore Russell’s life and legacy from a wide variety of perspectives. This is altogether fitting, given the many-sided nature of Russell, his life, and his work. The first section of the book considers Russell the man, and draws lessons from Russell’s complicated personal life. The second examines Russell the philosopher, and the philosophical world within which his work was embedded. The third scrutinizes Russell the atheist and critic of organized religion, inquiring which parts of his critical stance are worth emulating today. The final section revisits Russell the political activist; it directs an eye both at Russell’s own long career of peace activism, but also at his place in a highly political family tradition of which he was justifiably proud. This book thus constitutes an invitation, if one were needed, to the world of Bertrand Russell. Those new to Russell, but with an interest in biography, philosophy, religion, or politics, will hopefully find something to learn here. This may spark an interest in learning more about Russell. But this book is not just intended for the Russell neophyte. The book sheds fresh light on a number of topics central to Russell studies—his connections to other philosophers, for example. Scholars well-versed in Russell studies will enjoy grappling with the treatment given to these topics here.

Book The Problems of Philosophy

Download or read book The Problems of Philosophy written by Bertrand Russell and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell was a notable 20th century British philosopher, mathematician, historian, social critic, and political activist. Considered one of the founders of analytical philosophy, Russell was an iconoclast who helped lead the revolt against British idealism, a prominent philosophy in England at the end of the 19th century. First written in 1912, Bertrand Russell's "The Problems of Philosophy" was an attempt by the author to create a guide that succinctly and comprehensibly outlined the difficulties he saw in the body of philosophical thought up to his time. In trying to do so, he concentrated on knowledge instead of metaphysics, hoping to spark discussion that was both productive and beneficial. This work also explains Russell's famous distinction between 'knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description', which he first posited in 1910. Finally, "The Problems of Philosophy" draws upon the important theories of famous philosophers from Plato to Hegel in order to create a foundation for philosophical inquiry, not only for scholars but for the general public as well. While Russell does not necessarily solve the problems he sets forth, his work is still quite relevant in its scope and object for philosophers today. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

From the beginning of his long professional life he emphasized the importance of practice as well as theory. He was twice imprisoned by the British government for his political utterances. With his razor-sharp irony and morally impassioned rhetoric, Russell took on the forces of injustice, ignorance, and cruelty; one of his chief weapons was the letter to the editor.".
