Book excerpt: Do not fear change. Seek to learn what you do not know… Hubert ‘Bertie’ Thwaites is struggling with the Chinese bureaucracy and their refusal to approve his employer’s plan to establish a rail line from Shanghai to Beijing. Understands even less why Feng Shui—or what it even is—keeps being thrown up as the reason why a railway can’t be constructed. As his frustration grows, Bertie fears that the whole project might fail before its even begun, but he isn’t prepared to accept defeat yet. Pointed in the direction of two Feng Shui Masters’ with the political clout he needs, Bertie doesn’t hesitate to seek them out. But what he learns is more than the information needed to get his plans successfully approved. Mutual love is within the reach of all. Yang Hei and Yin Guang had worked themselves up from nothing to a position where even the top tiers of Shanghai society sought out their guidance, and it had been any easy choice to extend their services to foreigners desperate to get a foothold in China. But when Hubert Thwaites approached them at a soiree put on by another English merchant for assistance, they find themselves conflicted. Desiring a connection with Hubert that went beyond a simple business transaction, everything becomes complicated as emotions get heated and misunderstandings cause heartache. Will it be possible for Yang and Yin to bring Thwaites into their relationship successfully or will one of them need to make a choice and walk away?

Book The World According to Bertie

Download or read book The World According to Bertie written by Alexander McCall Smith and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 44 SCOTLAND STREET - Book 4 The residents and neighbors of 44 Scotland Street and the city of Edinburgh come to vivid life in these gently satirical, wonderfully perceptive serial novels, featuring six-year-old Bertie, a remarkably precocious boy—just ask his mother. There is never a quiet moment on 44 Scotland Street. In The World According to Bertie, Pat deals with the reappearance of Bruce, which has her heart skipping—and not in a pleasant way. Angus Lordie's dog Cyril has been taken away by the authorities, accused of being a serial biter. Unexpectedly, Domenica has offered to help free him. As usual, Big Lou is still looking for love, and handing out coffee and advice to the always contemplative Matthew. And Bertie, the beleaguered Italian-speaking six year old prodigy, now has a little brother, Ulysses, who Bertie hopes will help distract his pushy mother Irene. Beautifully observed, cleverly detailed, The World According to Bertie is classic McCall Smith and a treat for his avid fans as well as his first time readers.

Book excerpt: Sir Francis Bertie (from 1915 Lord Bertie of Thame) was a senior British diplomat of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. He is perhaps best known for the thirteen years between 1905 and 1918 during which time he was Britain's ambassador in Paris, and it is with this period of his life that Dr Hamilton is mainly concerned. The book thus examines his contribution to the evolution and maintenance of the entente cordiale, the nature of his 'anti-Germanism', his influence upon Sir Edward Grey and other British statesmen, and the eclipse of professional diplomacy during the first world war. Above all it is a study of a man whom another British diplomat was later to describe as 'the very last of the great ambassadors'.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together the most important articles, lectures, and essays of Van Vechten (Johnny) Veeder, a towering figure in the worlds of international commercial arbitration and arbitration between States and foreign investors. As noted by Judge Stephen Schwebel in his introduction to the volume, Johnny Veeder was unsurpassed as an arbitrator, tribunal chairman, expositor, analyst, and historian of international arbitration. The writings in this collection address a wide range of topics in the field, including the historical context of international arbitration and its influence on the modern-day practice, the role and responsibilities of the arbitrator, and the principles upholding international arbitration. The included works span the length of Johnny's career, drawing on his extensive learning and practical engagement. They analyse the past and present while asking prescient questions about arbitration's future in a changing global context. The reader of Johnny's essays and other contributions will profit by his extraordinary legal insight, and by the breadth and depth of his devotion to the arbitral process. The volume also gives a sense of his humanity, of his warmth and wit. Loved by his colleagues, his students, and indeed all those who came to know him, this volume is in celebration of the extraordinary achievements of this remarkable jurist, teacher, and human being.

Book Dress Culture in Late Victorian Women s Fiction

Download or read book Dress Culture in Late Victorian Women s Fiction written by Christine Bayles Kortsch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her immensely readable and richly documented book, Christine Bayles Kortsch asks us to shift our understanding of late Victorian literary culture by examining its inextricable relationship with the material culture of dress and sewing. Even as the Education Acts of 1870, 1880, and 1891 extended the privilege of print literacy to greater numbers of the populace, stitching samplers continued to be a way of acculturating girls in both print literacy and what Kortsch terms "dress culture." Kortsch explores nineteenth-century women's education, sewing and needlework, mainstream fashion, alternative dress movements, working-class labor in the textile industry, and forms of social activism, showing how dual literacy in dress and print cultures linked women writers with their readers. Focusing on Victorian novels written between 1870 and 1900, Kortsch examines fiction by writers such as Olive Schreiner, Ella Hepworth Dixon, Margaret Oliphant, Sarah Grand, and Gertrude Dix, with attention to influential predecessors like Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Brontë, and George Eliot. Periodicals, with their juxtaposition of journalism, fiction, and articles on dress and sewing are particularly fertile sites for exploring the close linkages between print and dress cultures. Informed by her examinations of costume collections in British and American museums, Kortsch's book broadens our view of New Woman fiction and its relationship both to dress culture and to contemporary women's fiction.
