Born in Copenhagen in 1770, he spent more than forty years in Italy, maintaining a large workshop in Rome. When he eventually returned to his native land in 1838 he was more known in Europe than in Denmark. But in the following years it became rather vice versa. Obviously this is connected with the fact that in Copenhagen he could not keep the close contact he had in Rome with the international art community and art market in the cultural capital of Europe. As a matter of fact only within the last 30 years has Thorvaldsen regained his rightful place in the European art historical context and he is considered as an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period in sculpture. In fact, his work has often been compared to that of Antonio Canova and he became the foremost artist in the field after Canova's death in 1822. The really strong point of this book is that it precisely links together Thorvaldsen's art with a broad international, artistic context and thus contributes to a more faceted understanding of his work.

Book excerpt: Although we are now, more than ever before, bombarded with portraits in both social and traditional media, interest in the three-dimensional sculptural portrait has declined dramatically. What accounts for this trend, and what does it mean for our understanding of the portrait as a medium? Portraits have a visceral power of attraction. They arouse our curiosity, prompting us to wonder who the person is behind the face - and, by extension, to reflect on our own identity. But whereas portrait paintings and photographs are immediately arresting, and fascinating, sculptural portraits can seem harder to approach there is no background and few details to help orient the beholder. As a result, sculpted portraits may seem like a sea of unknown faces that one only takes fleeting note of in passing; irrelevant, immaterial, perhaps even boring. But that is not how it used to be. Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was one of Europe's most popular portrait artists. Over the course of his lifetime, he created approximately 160 portraits, ranging from members of Europe's royal houses to leading cultural figures to ordinary Danes. Thorvaldsen's portraits thus make up the biggest single category of artworks in his oeuvre. In former times, such sculptural portraits were a common phenomenon. So what happened? Why did they go out of fashion? These are some of the questions that this book seeks to illuminate. Book excerpt: The Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), who lived most of his life in Rome, was not only one of Europe’s most soughtafter artists; he was also a collector. In addition to his own works and drawings, he built extensive collections of paintings, prints, drawings and books – and of ancient artefacts from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity: coins, lockets, containers, vases, lamps, fragments of sculpture and more. He also acquired a large collection of plaster casts, primarily after ancient sculptures and reliefs, but also of works dating from the Renaissance and up until his own lifetime. Thanks to Thorvaldsen’s bequest to the city of Copenhagen, his birthplace, all of these collections are still largely intact and well preserved at his museum. Home to a total of 657 plaster casts, the Thorvaldsen Museum’s cast collection is unique for several reasons: The collection offers us insight into the sculptor’s working methods and the development of his work because it served a clear function as an image bank of forms, motifs and subjects for Thorvaldsen’s own endeavours. Furthermore, the dual fact that the collection is so well preserved and was established over a relatively brief period of time makes it a valuable example illuminating the trade and distribution of plaster casts during the first half of the nineteenth century. These areas of study form the central focal point of Volume I of this publication. Volume II contains a catalogue of the individual objects in the cast collection, while Volume III collects the overviews, inventories, concordances and primary sources referred to in the first two volumes. Arising out of many years of study of Thorvaldsen’s cast collection conducted by their author, the classical archaeologist Jan Zahle, these books contain comprehensive source material from the period, much of it previously unknown.

Among the 25 beautiful works, dating from the early Renaissance to the Neoclassical period, are important statuettes by masters such as Gianfrancesco Susini, Willem Danielsz van Tetrode, Masimiliano Soldani-Benzi, Pietro Tacca and Joseph Nollekens.This elegant catalog accompanies the latest in a series of acclaimed exhibitions by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art at Carlton Hobbs LLC in New York (19-27 January 2017). It includes works by some of the greatest European sculptors from the Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods - a serene polychromed stucco Madonna and Child by the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti (c.1378-1455) from c.1423-40, along with two polychrome glazed terracottas by Santi (1494-1576) and Benedetto Buglioni (1459-1521). There are also a number of newly discovered masterpieces in bronze, for which Tomasso Brothers are now synonymous, which include a magnificent, striding, early bronze after the antique by Willem Danielsz van Tetrode (c.1525-1580). Intriguingly, the Castiglioni Hercules and Antaeus by Pietro Tacca is conjectured to have been made to celebrate a marriage between the great houses of Medici and Della Rovere, c.1620-37. The exhibition also includes a unique 'dancing' version of the ancient Borghese Satyr by Gian Francesco Susini, a highly finished composition of Ganymede and the Eagle by Massimiliano Soldani- Benzi (1656-1740) and an extremely rare gilt-bronze relief by the enigmatic court sculptor to Charles I of England, Francesco Fanelli (1577-c.1661). Amongst the finest and most exquisite objects on show are the newly discovered terracotta roundels by John Bacon the Elder (1740-1799) after frescoes found at Pompeii, that were later translated into black basalt and white stoneware versions by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795). Other treasures in terracotta include two works by Joseph Nollekens (1732-1823) depicting Eve bewailing the death of Abel and Lot and his Daughters, both believed to have been bought by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in Nollekens' posthumous sale of 1823. The carefully researched entries accompany beautiful photography and are bolstered by significant contributions from Charles Avery, Giancarlo Gentilini, Stefano Grandesso and Lorenzo Principi.
