Book excerpt: Family, food, engineering: these three words define the Bertazzoni brand, whose kitchen appliances date back to the nineteenth century. For more than 100 years, Bertazzoni kitchen appliances have helped people bring the best of home-cooked food to the family table. This book traces the history of the brand, from the first wood-burning cooking stoves through the gas stoves of the 1950s to contemporary completely designed kitchens. From the nineteenth century to the present day, the history of Bertazzoni appliances is intertwined with the history of home, living, and family cooking traditions. By looking at the evolution of kitchen design, we can trace the changes in our lifestyles. A brand with cooking ranges at its core that now also provides complete kitchens in every part of the world, Bertazzoni first began selling in the U.S. and Canada in 2005, and since then it has become a global brand that is still proud of its local, family roots in Italy.
Download or read book Human mobility health inequity and needs written by Giuliano Bertazzoni and published by Sapienza Università Editrice. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, which brings together and consolidates the research work of the interdisciplinary EMHAM group, is focused on the relationship among human mobility, healthcare and fairness in public healthcare and treatment. The investigation of the information produced by the Emergency Departments of the Rome Metropolitan Area has proved to be strategic in identifying the healthcare needs of foreign populations. Many of the dynamics concerning migrants can be traced back to the inappropriateness of visits and accesses to the Emergency Departments. This information, together with the result of dynamic evaluations and assessments, is useful not only for healthcare issues, but also for the demographic, socio-political and economic characterisation of the phenomenon of human mobility.
Download or read book Morale and the Italian Army during the First World War written by Vanda Wilcox and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian performance in the First World War has been generally disparaged or ignored compared to that of the armies on the Western Front, and troop morale in particular has been seen as a major weakness of the Italian army. In this first book-length study of Italian morale in any language, Vanda Wilcox reassesses Italian policy and performance from the perspective both of the army as an institution and of the ordinary soldiers who found themselves fighting a brutally hard war. Wilcox analyses and contextualises Italy's notoriously hard military discipline along with leadership, training methods and logistics before considering the reactions of the troops and tracing the interactions between institutions and individuals. Restoring historical agency to soldiers often considered passive and indifferent, Wilcox illustrates how and why Italians complied, endured or resisted the army's demands through balancing their civilian and military identities.

Download or read book Comparative studies between HTLV 1 and HTLV 2 function and pathobiology written by Umberto Bertazzoni and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human T-cell leukemia viruses type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1 and HTLV-2) share a common genetic organization, expression strategy and ability to infect and immortalize T-cells in vitro; however, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 are strikingly different in terms of clinical impact. HTLV-1 is recognized as the aetiological agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), and HTLV-associated myeolopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), in contrast, HTLV-2 does not cause hematologic disorders and is only sporadically associated with cases of subacute myelopathy. HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 also exhibit distinct cellular tropisms in vivo: HTLV-1 is mainly found in CD4+T lymphocytes, whereas CD8+T-cells are the preferred target for HTLV-2. The articles contributed in this Research Topic are covering all the different aspects that characterize HTLV-1 and HTLV-2, by highlighting differences in their biology that might provide clues to their distinct pathogenic properties.

Download or read book Molecular Pathology of HTLV 1 written by Umberto Bertazzoni and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus discovered, in 1980, by Gallo and co-workers. About 5-10% of HTLV-1-infected individuals are at risk of developing either a fatal malignancy, adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), or a chronic neuroinflammatory syndrome, HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Both diseases are incurable at present. Many issues concerning HTLV-1’s life cycle and pathobiology are still unsolved or controversial, and new approaches for prognostic stratification of patients and eradication of HTLV-1 infection are in high demand. In this Research Topic, the focus has been centered on discussing two main themes: the functional analysis and oncogenic potential of HTLV-1 regulatory proteins and the control of HTLV-1-associated diseases. The 22 articles in this eBook cover many different aspects of HTLV-1 infection and pathogenesis, providing new perspectives and groundwork for future studies.

Book excerpt: At Dwell, we're staging a minor revolution. We think that it's possible to live in a house or apartment by a bold modern architect, to own furniture and products that are exceptionally well designed, and still be a regular human being. We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.
Download or read book Dendritic Cells in Fundamental and Clinical Immunology written by Jacques Banchereau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings contain the contributions of the partIcIpants of the Third International Symposium on Dendritic Cells that was held in Annecy, France, from June 19 to June 24, 1994. This symposium represented a follow-up of the first and second international symposia that were held in Japan in 1990 and in the Netherlands in 1992. Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells, and are found in all tissues and organs of the body. They can be classified into: (1) interstitial dendritic cells of the heart, kidney, gut, and lung;(2) Langerhans cells in the skin and mucous membranes; (3) interdigitating dendritic cells in the thymic medulla and secondary lymphoid tissue; and (4) blood dendritic cells and lymph dendritic cells (veiled cells). Although dendritic cells in each of these compartments are all CD45+ leukocytes that arise from the bone marrow, they may exhibit differences that relate to maturation state and microenvironment. Dendritic cells are specialized antigen-presenting cells for T lymphocytes: they process and present antigens efficiently in situ, and stimulate responses from naive and memory T cells in the paracortical area of secondary lymphoid organs. Recent evidence also demonstrates their role in induction of tolerance. By contrast, the primary and secondary B-cell follicles contain follicular dendritic cells that trap and retain intact antigen as immune complexes for long periods of time. The origin of follicular dendritic cells is not clear, but most investigators believe that these cells are not leukocytes.

Download or read book Terminal Transferase in Immunobiology and Leukemia written by Umberto Bertazzoni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a conference devoted to the study of the structure and function of Terminal deoxynucleotidyl Transferase (TdT) and its utilization as biochemical marker in immuno biology and leukemia, held in Elba, Italy on May 28-31, 1981. The en zyme has been known to nucleic acid biochemists for more than 20 years and has proved to be an excellent tool for making deoxypolymers, label ing DNA fragments, and adding homopolymer tails to restriction endonu clease fragments from DNA. Since the discovery of its peculiar tissue distribution, normally restricted to the thymus and bone marrow, and of its abnormal occur rence in human leukemic lymphoblasts, TdT has become one of the most widely used markers in the study of lymphocyte differentiation and in the classification of hematopoietic neoplasia. The subject seemed most appropriate for a meeting where molecular and cellular biologists, immunologists and hematologists could convene for the first time to discuss both basic research and the clinical aspects of the problem. Among the goals achieved by this workshop was the sharing of in formation about the enzymology of TdT, biochemical and immunological methodology and the correlation of TdT with other markers in the diag nosis of leukemia. The remarkable accordance of results, presented here by five independent hematological institutions, from analysis of TdT in several thousands of leukemic patients, marks the importance of this enzyme as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in these diseases.

Download or read book ADP Ribosylation of Proteins written by Felix R. Althaus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an update on recent advances in the field of ADP ribosylation reactions. The individual chapters represent the synopses of contributions which were presented at the Seventh International Symposium on ADP-Ribosylation Reactions, held in Vitznau, Switzer land, from September 23 to 27, 1984. This volume covers new devel opments in the field since the last meeting was held on this topic in 1982, in Tokyo. Therefore, the present text is not meant to form a comprehensive account of a specialized research area, but encompasses a collection of state-of-the-art reports from the vast majority of laboratories currently involved in ADP-ribosylation work. For the sake of rapid publication, the editorial policy was to ensure easy accessibility of information contained in individual articles rather than to provide elaborate cross references or reference to work published prior to 1982. However, a detailed subject index will help the reader find complementary information. The enzymes of ADP-ribose metabolism have not yet acquired universally acceptable trivial names and the Enzyme Commission has not yet defmitely decided on formal appellations. Consequently, a variety of names for the nuclear enzyme appear in this book, including nuc1ear(ADP-ribosyl)transferase, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, or synthetase or synthase. Hopefully, a common convention will soon be established. The Seventh International Symposium on ADP-Ribosylation Reac tions was only possible because of the generous support which we have been given by our sponsors, listed below.
Download or read book Biochemical and Biological Markers of Neoplastic Transformation written by Prakash Chandra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is arecord of the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study institute on "Biochemical and Bio logical Markers of Neoplastic Transformation" held September 28 - October 8, 1981, at Corfu, Greece. As early as 1860, Rudolf Virchow provided the first genetic concept of cancer by postulating "Omnia ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa ejusdem generis", a modification of the then exisiting cell theory "Omnis ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa". Thus, the idea that all cells originate from the parent cell was extended to the idea that all cancer cells come from the "paren t" cancer cello But how the first cancer cell arose, or in other words, how anormal cell changed to a cancer cell, is, even after 120 years, a mystery. Experimental studies of the past have convinced us that a number of factors contribute to the neoplastic transformation of anormal cell, but our knowledge on the mechanisms involved in this process is still in an embryonic state. In the last few years, however, this field has witnessed a most remarkable advancement cata lyzed by the development of modern technology in the al lied fields of immunology, the production of mono clonal antibodies, molecular biology, and sequencing v PREFACE and cloning of ONC genes. Presently, it is becoming more and more evident to the wishful mind of those engaged in this research that we are approaching a turning point. Thus, an assessment of the present situa tion will be most desirable at this time
