Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An investigation of the process by which large parts of Europe accepted the Christian faith between the fourth and the fourteenth centuries and of some of the cultural consequences that flowed therefrom." In a work of splendid scholarship that reflects both a firm mastery of difficult sources and a keen intuition, one of Britain's foremost medievalists tells the story of the Christianization of Europe. It is a very large story, for conversion encompassed much more than religious belief. With it came enormous cultural change: Latin literacy and books, Roman notions of law and property, and the concept of town life, as well as new tastes in food, drink, and dress. Whether from faith or by force, from self-interest or by revelation, conversion had an immense impact that is with us even today.

Book excerpt: Finding one's way amongst the myriad of provisions that govern the system of remedies and the proceedings before the three constituent courts of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) presents a major challenge to European practitioners. It is crucial to possess a reliable, thorough guide to the relevant statutory provisions and rules of procedure – such a guide as this book, written by one of Europe's foremost jurists, provides. For every kind of case and any situation likely to arise, it clearly explains which rules apply and how to proceed. It is fully up to date, covering the renewed rules of procedure of the Court of Justice, the General Court, and the Civil Service Tribunal, as well as updated provisions and practice directions. From foundations and principles to specifi c rules on evidence, damages, failure to act, preliminary rulings, interim measures, and much more, the book covers all essential elements of CJEU procedure, including the following: – division of competences between the Union courts; – admissibility; – rules regarding anonymity; – practice rules for the implementation of rules of procedure; – service of documents; – setting and extension of time limits, hearings, witnesses, and experts; – deposit and recovery of sums; – rules applying to the chamber system; – assignment of cases; – application of competition rules, rules on state aid, and rules on trade protection; – rules in cases concerning intellectual property rights; – rules in actions brought on the basis of an arbitration agreement; – rules governing access to documents; – delimitation of jurisdiction between the CJEU and national courts; – expedited procedures; and – scope of the rules on costs. Each chapter ends with a list of further readings. Any lawyer seeking appropriate remedies in any case before the CJEU will benefi t enormously from this book, whether used as a hands-on manual in particular cases or absorbed over time. It is sure to serve as an essential resource for many years to come.

Book Clinical Aspects of The Plasma Proteins

Download or read book Clinical Aspects of The Plasma Proteins written by Tadashi Kawai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the year of 1969 when this monograph was originally published in Japanese by Professor TADASHI KAWAI, titled as "The Plasma Proteins, Their Fundamental and Clinical Aspects." After I read through the Japanese edition, I was impressed by its rather complete coverage of the subjects and their detailed descriptions. I have felt that this excellent monograph should be distributed not only among our Japanese scien tists but also among many other colleagues throughout the world. I am happy, the refore, to know that the English edition of his monograph, partly revised, is ready to be published at this time. Professor KAWAI received his postgraduate medical training in U.S.A. for seven years, and was certified by the American Board of Pathology in both Anatomical and Clinical Pathology in Fall, 1962. Thus, I believe, he is the most suitable fellow for publishing the English edition of this kind.

Book Eastern Influences on Western Philosophy

Download or read book Eastern Influences on Western Philosophy written by Macfie A. L. Macfie and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of East on West - of Eastern ideas on Western thought - has become an increasingly vexed issue in recent times. Opinion is divided between two main schools: those who believe that Oriental ideas have exercised a considerable influence on Western thought, and those who, for a variety of reasons, believe that such influence has remained negligible. In this Reader A. L. Macfie suggests that the reality lies somewhere between these two extremes, and that the interest taken by Western thinkers in Eastern thought in the modern period has moved from one of passing interest, through serious attention, to some level of assimilation and acceptance.Eastern Influences on Western Philosophy explores the extent of Oriental influence on European thought, primarily in the period of the Enlightenment and the nineteenth-century period of doubt and scepticism that followed it. As such it is the first Reader to bring together in one place a series of specific historical and textual studies of Oriental influence upon European thinkers. Starting with Malebranche and ending with Heidegger, other Western thinkers considered include Leibniz, Voltaire, Hume, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Emerson, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Jung and Buber. To accompany the readings the editor's introduction explores the idea of influence in the context of the chosen readings, and at the same time raises the question of how far Edwards Said's thesis regarding Orientalism actually applies to Western thought.Key Features:* Reflects increasing interest in relationship between Eastern and Western Philosophy* Covers major European figures from the 18th and 19th centuries and the way Eastern thought influenced them* Substantial editorial introduction places readings in context and explores the influence of the East on the West* Previous work by editor praised for its accessibility
