Book excerpt: A Leading Laboratory for Contemporary Art Turns Thirty KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e.V. is one of the world's most highly renowned organizations for contemporary art. For three decades, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art has been a vital scene of progressive creative practices; pursuing distinctive visions, the curators who have worked here, including Klaus Biesenbach, Anselm Franke, Susanne Pfeffer, and Krist Gruijthuijsen, have set major trends in the international art world. Since KW's early days, the avant-garde program of exhibitions and transdisciplinary events has made significant contributions to the discourse of contemporary art and its impact beyond art's own disciplinary boundaries. Flagship programs have included the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, initiated in 1997, and a wide-ranging exhibition practice that has spawned seminal projects including Berliner Chronik (1994), Stand der Dinge (2000), Regarding Terror: The RAF Exhibition (2005), One on One (2012-13), and The Making of Husbands: Christina Ramberg in Dialogue (2019-20). The list of outstanding artists featured in KW's exhibitions has included Absalon, Kader Attia, Keren Cytter, Cyprien Gaillard, Douglas Gordon, Channa Horwitz, Carsten Höller, Renata Lucas, Hiwa K, Annette Kelm, Mika Rottenberg, Christoph Schlingensief, Hassan Sharif, and Anri Sala. Thirty years after Klaus Biesenbach, Alexandra Binswanger, Philipp von Doering, Clemens Homburger, and Alfonso Rutigliano founded KW in what was then a dilapidated former margarine factory in post-fall-of-the-Wall Berlin, this book reviews the institution's extensive archive and exhibition history. It is the first publication to offer a comprehensive overview of all shows and the eleven editions (and counting) of Berlin Biennale. With essays by Jan Verwoert, Susanne von Falkenhausen, and Jenny Dirksen, a conversation between Klaus Biesenbach, Krist Gruijthuijsen, and Gabriele Horn, and a chronology of exhibitions and projects running to over 50 pages.

Book Culinary Lesson The Space of Food

Download or read book Culinary Lesson The Space of Food written by Charlotte Birnbaum and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CULINARY LESSONS - The Space of Food is based on a series of events, Culinary Lessons, which were hosted by the Städelschule Architecture Class and which engaged with the relation between food, art and architecture. The series addressed the enormous so- cial, economic and cultural spaces that accompany the production and consumption of food, and attempted to unravel some of these spaces' structure and dynamics. The central ambition was to learn from culinary history and, not the least, the recent vanguard of culinary practice. No human activity is so encompassing and engenders such ef- fects on our societies and lives as the culinary. Culinary practices lay out aesthetic as much as ethical trajectories that span from century-old traditions to lifesaving experiments for the present and future. They provide for human sustenance and the highest form of bodily enjoyment while transversing the spaces that they at once produce and profoundly affect. This fourth issue of the SAC JOURNAL presents the central con- versation in Culinary Lessons, which took place in Venice, together with a series of texts and projects that chart and speculate on the relationship between architecture, art and the culinary wor- ld. Contributors to this issue include, amongst others, Charlotte Birnbaum, Daniel Birnbaum, Mike Bouchet, Sanford Kwinter, Fabrice Mazliah, Tobias Rehberger, David Ruy, Kivi Sotamaa, Carolyn Steel, Jan Åman and Johan Bettum. It also features the winning projects of the AIV Master Thesis Prize in 2015 and 2016. SAC JOURNAL is a publication series that addresses topical isues within architecture. The journal documents, critically reviews and presents theoretical discussions concerning contemporary design and research. The content of SAC JOURNAL is produced by invited contributors and students and faculty at the Städel- schule Architecture Class.

Book Out of Beirut

Download or read book Out of Beirut written by Modern Art Oxford and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beirut had been a renowned resort and a center of culture and style for hundreds of years, when, in the late twentieth century, it became the site of terrible violence and trauma. More than 15 years after the official end of Lebanon's civil war in 1990, political instability, bombings and assassinations still dominate the international headlines, obscuring years of swift change. In that time, Beirut became fertile ground for radical and innovative art-making and critical thought. "Out of Beirut" introduces new and recent work by artists who have been at the forefront of that activity, and who, in this new time of turmoil and change, will be watching Beirut's fate closely, chronicling it, and perhaps by their responses, changing it. With work by Fadi Abdallah, Gilbert Hage, Heartland, Bernard Khoury, Rabib Mroue, Walid Raad, Walid Sadek, Jalal Toufic, Paola Yacoub and Michel Lasserre and Akram Zaatari, among others.

Book excerpt: Crossing Cheshire Bridge is an alluring look into the intimate relationship between the people who work, live and play on Cheshire Bridge Road and the places they traverse. These photographs trace a decade of unlikely connections bridged together by this infamous one-mile road. At first glance, the photographs might seem like an exploration of otherness within a seedy place that is censured by the surrounding affluent residential community and suburbs, but it is quite the opposite. The photographs reveal deep personal connections that provide a glimpse into their lives. Their untold stories open a door to countless insights of human behavior. Cheshire Bridge Road pre-dates the city of Atlanta. Cheshire Bridge Road was originally a farming corridor that attracted settlers in the early 1800's. It remained agricultural until the early 20th century, when suburban development and commerce moved into the area. By the 1970's, the more affluent residents began moving further from Atlanta, creating opportunities for low rent businesses. This iconic road is famous for having many adult entertainment establishments. Many of these places are known as Atlanta's Red Light District. Recently rediscovered, the road is an attractive infill location between Atlanta's two largest employment areas, Buckhead and Midtown. Businesses, where the same people have work for decades, are being destroyed to make way for high-end apartments and mixed-use properties. Sadly, Cheshire Bride Road is on the way to becoming gentrified.

Download or read book Benedikt Partenheimer written by David Campany and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Art and Society 1972 2022 2072

Download or read book Art and Society 1972 2022 2072 written by Anton Biebl and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of modernity, art has been associated with freedom, provocation and courage. In 1972, art was to unfold its potential as an emancipatory and creative force as part of the Gesamtkunstwerk of the XX. Olympic Games in Munich—according to the grand vision of its planners. The international avant-garde of the time, including Walter de Maria, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Dan Flavin, enthusiastically developed revolutionary concepts. Many of these remained in draft-form. After the tragic assassination of Israeli athletes, concepts such as the "Spielstraße" were canceled. This publication is the first to give an impression of the playful, participatory cultural programme of 1972. In the second part of the book, a multitude of voices from all over the world look to the future. International authors and artists use contemporary examples to convey the importance of the arts in shaping the democratic society of the future.

Book excerpt: I like you, I like you a lot is a personal work about family and the experience of death and mourning. It responds to the tragic loss of the photographer's 13-year-old brother Maks, who drowned while on a scout's trip in 2008 in Poland. The pictures reveal the sequence of events in the aftermath of the tragedy. Alicja Dobrucka's camera became a protecting shield from the brutal reality of a helpless situation. Maks and his friends were also first generation to grow up under an increasingly Westernised culture, and the camera witnesses how they were enthralled by Western - and especially American -archetypes.

Book Notes for an Epilogue

Download or read book Notes for an Epilogue written by Eszter Szablyar and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notes for an Epilogue is a new series of large-scale color photographs by Hungarian photographer Tamas Dezso (born 1978). The work offers a look at the painterly landscapes, derelict factories and forgotten way of life of an economically exhausted Romania and isolated regions within the country. Dezso focuses on the margins of Romanian society, the crumbling structures of forgotten factories, their effects on villages, communities and individuals, and the disappearing culture and centuries-old traditions. Left with only a decaying infrastructure, the effects of the autocratic regime that lasted from 1946 until 1989 still cast their long shadow over the Romanian countryside. While paying homage to the customs and traditions that have passed orally from generation to generation, Notes for an Epilogue also succeeds as eyewitness to the locations, buildings and figures of a rapidly vanishing world.
