Book War on the Middleline The Founding of a Community In the Kayaderosseras Patent In the Midst of the American Revolution

Download or read book War on the Middleline The Founding of a Community In the Kayaderosseras Patent In the Midst of the American Revolution written by James E. Richmond and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1768 the sixty-year struggle to open the lands of the Kayaderosseras Patent north of Albany for settlement was finally resolved. The long conflict with France was over, and disputes over ownership rights with the local Mohawk Indians had been settled. This is the story of the families that left their homesteads in Connecticut and moved to Middleline Road in Ball's Town, in the Patent. There they began their new life on the frontier, soon to be interrupted by the American Revolution. As Yankees, most of these pioneers supported the rebel cause. In 1780 the war came to them, as a contingent of 200 British soldiers, Loyalists, and Mohawk Indians descended on Ball's Town, pillaging and burning their newly-built cabins. In the wake of the raid twenty-five men were carried off to Canada, where many remained imprisoned until the end of the War two years later. "War on the Middleline" is the story of these families, their heritage, and the hardships they endured during the founding of our nation.

Book Family Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Family Papers Classic Reprint written by Samuel Henry Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Papers Most of these papers, relating to the day and hartsinck families, came into my possession after the death of my father (the Rt. Honble. Sir john day); on one of them, in the handwriting of his father (captain john day) was a request that the documents should be taken care of as they may be interesting and perhaps even useful to my children, or even children's children. In addition to taking care of them I desire to make known their contents to other members of the family. With this object I have made a precis of all the documents: to have reproduced them in full and in the original language - many are in Dutch - was, having regard to the Scope of the work, impracticable. In translating and condensing there is, I am aware, a danger of not always giving the true meaning of a passage and of occasionally omitting something, which others might wish to see, but I have endeavoured to err on the side of giving too much rather than too little. Book The Left Armed Corps

    Book Details:
  • Author : Allison M. Johnson
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2022-05-11
  • ISBN : 0807177482
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book The Left Armed Corps written by Allison M. Johnson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Left-Armed Corps collects and annotates a unique and little-known body of Civil War literature: narrative sketches, accounts, and poetry by veterans who lost the use of their right arms due to wounds sustained during the conflict and who later competed in left-handed penmanship contests in 1865 and 1866. Organized by William Oland Bourne, the contests called on men who lost limbs while fighting for the Union to submit “specimens” of their best left-handed “business” writing in the form of personal statements. Bourne hoped the contests would help veterans reenter the work force and become economically viable citizens. Following Bourne’s aims, the contests commemorated the sacrifices made by veterans and created an archive of individual stories detailing the recently ended conflict. However, the contestants and their entries also present visible evidence—in the form of surprisingly elegant or understandably sloppy handwriting specimens—of the difficulties veterans faced in adapting to life after the war and recovering from its traumas. Their written accounts relate the chaos of the battlefield, the agony of amputation, and the highs and lows of recovery. Editor Allison M. Johnson organizes the selections thematically in order to highlight issues crucial to the experiences of Civil War soldiers, veterans, and amputees, offering invaluable insights into the ways in which former fighting men understood and commemorated their service and sacrifice. A detailed introduction provides background information on the contests and comments on the literary and historical significance of the veterans and their writings. Chapter subjects include political and philosophical treatises by veterans, amateur but poignant poetic testaments, and graphic accounts of wounding and amputation. The Left-Armed Corps makes accessible this archive of powerful testimony and creative expression from Americans who fought to preserve the Union and end slavery.

Book The Way We Never Were

Download or read book The Way We Never Were written by Stephanie Coontz and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive edition of the classic, myth-shattering history of the American family Leave It to Beaver was not a documentary, a man's home has never been his castle, the "male breadwinner marriage" is the least traditional family in history, and rape and sexual assault were far higher in the 1970s than they are today. In The Way We Never Were, acclaimed historian Stephanie Coontz examines two centuries of the American family, sweeping away misconceptions about the past that cloud current debates about domestic life. The 1950s do not present a workable model of how to conduct our personal lives today, Coontz argues, and neither does any other era from our cultural past. This revised edition includes a new introduction and epilogue, exploring how the clash between growing gender equality and rising economic inequality is reshaping family life, marriage, and male-female relationships in our modern era. More relevant than ever, The Way We Never Were is a potent corrective to dangerous nostalgia for an American tradition that never really existed.

Book Fields Forest And Family

Download or read book Fields Forest And Family written by Carol Ireson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Vietnam War, socialist governments ascended to power in all the countries of the former Indochina. In Laos, more than a decade of socialist reorganization was followed by economic liberalization in the late 1980s. Laotian women had traditionally sustained the household and local economy with their work in field, forest, and family, but political and economic changes markedly affected the context of rural women's prevailing sources of power and subordination. Socialist policies, for example, curtailed women's commercial activities while recognizing women's work in agriculture and child care.In this richly detailed volume, Carol Ireson draws on ten years of fieldwork and research to explore this metamorphosis among Laotian women. Throughout, she poses questions such as: What has happened to women's traditional sources of control over their own and others' activities since the 1975 socialist revolution? Have their traditional sources of power or autonomy expanded or contracted as changing conditions have allowed other groups to appropriate women's traditional resources and roles? Have the dramatic changes had different effects on rural women of differing ethnic backgrounds and varying economic means?Focusing on women from three major ethnic groups?the lowland Lao, the Khmu, and the Hmong?Ireson examines the different ways they have responded to political and economic changes. She shows us that the Laotian experience reveals in microcosm the processes of change toward specialization and integration of women's work into national and global economies and explains how this shift deeply affects women's lives.
