Ancestors and descendants have lived mainly in Connecticut, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Canada.

The long conflict with France was over, and disputes over ownership rights with the local Mohawk Indians had been settled. This is the story of the families that left their homesteads in Connecticut and moved to Middleline Road in Ball's Town, in the Patent. There they began their new life on the frontier, soon to be interrupted by the American Revolution. As Yankees, most of these pioneers supported the rebel cause. In 1780 the war came to them, as a contingent of 200 British soldiers, Loyalists, and Mohawk Indians descended on Ball's Town, pillaging and burning their newly-built cabins. In the wake of the raid twenty-five men were carried off to Canada, where many remained imprisoned until the end of the War two years later. "War on the Middleline" is the story of these families, their heritage, and the hardships they endured during the founding of our nation.

Book excerpt: The Left-Armed Corps collects and annotates a unique and little-known body of Civil War literature: narrative sketches, accounts, and poetry by veterans who lost the use of their right arms due to wounds sustained during the conflict and who later competed in left-handed penmanship contests in 1865 and 1866. Organized by William Oland Bourne, the contests called on men who lost limbs while fighting for the Union to submit “specimens” of their best left-handed “business” writing in the form of personal statements. Bourne hoped the contests would help veterans reenter the work force and become economically viable citizens. Following Bourne’s aims, the contests commemorated the sacrifices made by veterans and created an archive of individual stories detailing the recently ended conflict. However, the contestants and their entries also present visible evidence—in the form of surprisingly elegant or understandably sloppy handwriting specimens—of the difficulties veterans faced in adapting to life after the war and recovering from its traumas. Their written accounts relate the chaos of the battlefield, the agony of amputation, and the highs and lows of recovery. Editor Allison M. Laotian women had traditionally sustained the household and local economy with their work in field, forest, and family, but political and economic changes markedly affected the context of rural women's prevailing sources of power and subordination. Socialist policies, for example, curtailed women's commercial activities while recognizing women's work in agriculture and child care.In this richly detailed volume, Carol Ireson draws on ten years of fieldwork and research to explore this metamorphosis among Laotian women. Throughout, she poses questions such as: What has happened to women's traditional sources of control over their own and others' activities since the 1975 socialist revolution? Have their traditional sources of power or autonomy expanded or contracted as changing conditions have allowed other groups to appropriate women's traditional resources and roles?
