Book excerpt: "This report describes the development and assessment of shallow (0 ≤40 m) benthic habitat maps for Fish Bay, Coral Bay and the St. Thomas East End Reserve (STEER) in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The objective of this effort, conducted by NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science in partnership with the Nature Conservancy (TNC), the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), was to provide spatially-explicit information describing the benthic habitat types and live coral cover present in these three locations. This habitat information will support the development of local action strategies for coral reef conservation in each of these places, providing roadmaps to address key issues and remedy specific threats to coral reefs. The three habitat maps, generated using a combination of semi-automated classification and visual interpretation techniques, represent the first digital maps that describe nearly 100% of the seafloor in these areas. This effort also marks the first time that high resolution imagery describing seafloor depth was collected in these locations"--About this document.

Book excerpt: Located at the southeastern end of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), the St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER) is a collection of several existing protected areas, including Cas Cay/Mangrove Lagoon, St. James, and Compass Point Salt Pond Marine Reserves and Wildlife Sanctuaries (MRWS). The marine areas of the STEER include a diverse array of habitats, including coral reefs, lagoons, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests, which support numerous fish and shellfish species. In addition, STEER is an important recreational and commercial resource for the island of St. Thomas. The adjacent watershed is considered highly impacted and urbanized, with numerous sources of point and non-point pollution, leading to concerns about potential contamination and its effects on the marine resources. To fill knowledge gaps and inform management of the STEER, several complimentary projects were developed in coordination with STEER's Core Management Team, including an assessment of biological communities and chemical contamination within the STEER.

Book excerpt: "The insular shelf south of St. Thomas and St. John, in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) is an expansive geomorphologic feature with extensive mesophotic coral reefs occurring at 30 to 150 meter depths. These mesophotic reefs are part of a broader coral reef community in the U.S. Caribbean that provide a wide range of ecosystem goods and services estimated to provide $187 million per year (in 2007 US dollars) to local communities. While these reefs provide great economic value to local communities, they are increasingly under threat from multiple human-caused stressors, making it critical for the USVI and Puerto Rico jurisdictions to find ways to preserve and sustainably manage them. Ideally, the first step in any marine management process is to comprehensively map and inventory the location of coral reef resources. The habitat map products provided in this report represent the first complete habitat map for the insular shelf south of St. Thomas and St. John. These products also represent the culmination of an extensive seafloor mapping campaign conducted by NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) in collaboration with regional partners"--Executive Summary. Many endangered species and species related to fisheries depend on the benthic habitat for their basic life cycle stages (reproduction, recruitment, nursery and feeding grounds) who might be impacted by natural and human induced causes. Ranging from species richness studies to population and community structure chapters, this book will bring the reader many options on how to measure environmental impacts. In particular, an analysis of how these environmental studies are made in Mexico provided a good example of how the present report base model is overdue and expresses the need for another approach. Keep in mind the present model does not take into account any statistical approach and is not mandatory in terms of the synergic and accumulative impacts; the lack of this consistency makes evaluation impossible to tell if the impacts are really happening.

Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 1 covers: water and sediment quality and contaminants in the Gulf; natural oil and gas seeps in the Gulf of Mexico; coastal habitats, including flora and fauna and coastal geology; offshore benthos and plankton, with an analysis of current knowledge on energy capture and energy flows in the Gulf; and shellfish and finfish resources that provide the basis for commercial and recreational fisheries.
