Book excerpt: The 1864 art debut of Sarah Taggart Benson’s spurred wide acclaim among New York society. Many thought a woman artist would not be taken seriously, but her popularity grew, spawning an insurrection against rigid Victorian standards, and a following of counter-culturists known as the Urban Romantics. They congregated in the downstairs galley and in the basement tavern of the brownstone she shared with her husband in Greenwich Village. The rooms evolved in accord as a center of a new artistic universe known affectionately as Benson’s House. Then one day the balance became unbroken. Throughout five generations, her family kept hold of the reins of the chariot, cultivating art and music to restore the balance and speak for the common man against the oppressions of institutional authority. The culture grew with certain defiance, nurturing slave songs to speak boldly throughout Post Impressionism, Jazz, Flappers and Bootleg Whiskey, The New Masses, Folk Music, Beatniks, and disciples of Rock & Roll. This is their saga - an American love story accumulated over a hundred years - passed down through the generations by tavern discourse.

Book excerpt: Self-Build Homes connects the burgeoning interdisciplinary research on self-build with commentary from leading international figures in the self-build and wider housing sector. Through their focus on community, dwelling, home and identity, the chapters explore the various meanings of self-build housing, encouraging new directions for discussions about self-building and calling for the recognition of the social dimensions of this process, from consideration of the structures, policies and practices that shape it, through to the lived experience of individuals and households.Divided into four parts – Discourse, Rationale, Meaning; Values, Lifestyles, Imaginaries; Community and Identity; and Perspectives from Practice – the volume comes at a time of renewed focus from policy managers and practitioners, as well as prospective builders themselves, on self-build as a means for producing homes that are more stylised, affordable and appropriate for the specific needs of households. It responds to recent advances in housing and planning policy, while also bringing this into conversation with interdisciplinary perspectives from across the social sciences on housing, home and homemaking. In this way, the book seeks to update understandings of self-build and to account for housing as a distinctly social process.

This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House with the Brick-Kiln By E. F. Benson Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories, which were often first published in story magazines such as Pearson's Magazine or Hutchinson's Magazine, 20 of which were illustrated by Edmund Blampied. These "spook stories," as they were also called, were then reprinted in collections by his principal publisher, Walter Hutchinson. His 1906 short story, "The Bus-Conductor," a fatal-crash premonition tale about a person haunted by a hearse driver, has been adapted several times, notably in 1944 (in the film Dead of Night and as an anecdote in Bennett Cerf's Ghost Stories anthology published the same year) and in a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone. The catchphrase from the story, "Room for one more," even spawned an urban legend, and also appears in the 1986 Oingo Boingo song, "Dead Man's Party." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Book excerpt: The architectural history of Troy House in Monmouthshire is positioned at the centre of this extensive new research volume, to support a consideration of how the surrounding land was refashioned over time. Investigating the estate’s main components, first individually and then by cross-referencing the findings, extends our current understanding of them as discreet and at the same time interrelating entities. Previously unrecorded historical features are discovered that belong to the house and its landscape, and comprehensive evidence is applied to challenge current understandings. The house and its pleasure gardens, the walled garden, the farm and the surrounding parkland are demonstrated together by this research to be a rare surviving example, in Wales especially, of a complete Tudor estate with Jacobean and Carolean aggrandisement. As such, Troy House occupies a significant place in history.

The house at the end of Freetown Street in Nigeria’s Sabon Gari was once a sanatorium for colonists deranged from the heat and insanity of the place. Now it is home to a family whose unorthodox lives unfold into legend: Sweet Mother, an artist, her husband Shariff, a writer and soldier, and their children André and Max. From the moment his baby brother André is born, Max attaches himself to him, even dreaming the boy’s homicidal dreams. Serene and beautiful, Ladidi joins the family as a foster child, promising to marry the boy at school who can bring her a strawberry, a fruit she has never tasted. Sensuality blooms, along with loss of innocence amid the death of music legend Fela Kuti, massacres, disappearances, abductions and broken promises. While Sweet Mother and Shariff battle their personal demons, Max realises you cannot save your family. But can you ever escape them? In his exhilarating debut, TJ Benson conjures up a kaleidoscope of Nigeria. This is the extraordinary tale of five people bound by blood, each searching for a way through.

Book excerpt: I don't know why nobody ever wanted me.For real, I mean. My parents died when I was eight, and I spent the next ten years hopping between foster homes. Let's just say, they barely did me any favors. Now I'm done with school, degree in hand, and... I've got nothing. No job lined up. No apartment, once the lease runs out. Nowhere to be and no one to be there with. Except... well... I do have DNA test results from a genealogy website. With close family matches. It's probably a stupid idea. A total long shot, really. ...I'm going to go and find them. This is just about loose ends.I quit calling Bennett Wood home years ago. It was more like a... home base. Living the life of a long haul trucker didn't lend itself to much settling down in one spot. And for a long time, it worked. Always on the go, looking ahead to the next shipment, the next truck stop. But honestly? I'm getting too old for this. I want to set down roots. Find a partner, someone to share lazy Saturday mornings with. I've got a plan - sell the house I inherited. Move to a larger city. Find a lover. But that was before he showed up, looking for his kin. He's too young for me, of course. It's just a fling. Just two people passing through, taking some comfort from one another. Isn't it?Finding His Way Home is the first book in the new, contemporary Benson Brothers series. Set in the small town of Bennett Wood, North Carolina, you won't want to miss out on these sweet and steamy love stories! This book, and all the books in the series, can be read as a standalone.

Book excerpt: A fun, playful story about a naughty dog who goes on adventures around the neighborhood whenever his owner leaves for school. Flick’s dog, Benson, is a very good boy. He waits for her at home and he never chases anything . . . or so Flick thinks. One day, when Flick leaves for school, Benson chases a cat into the back garden, over the fence, and into the park, where he pursues a squirrel. A ball catches his eye and he follows it into the pond—and then he runs, dripping wet, through the middle of a picnic lunch, stealing a sausage. As the picnickers shout, “Go home, Benson!,” he races back across town, darting through the back door just as Flick arrives home from school. “Have you been a good boy, Benson? Did you stay?” Flick asks. Only the reader really knows what Benson has been doing all day. Stay, Benson! is beautifully designed, featuring bold graphic illustrations and die- cut pages that entice readers to chase Benson through the book. Author and illustrator Thereza Rowe’s striking images hark back to a classic style of illustration, but use a bright color palette that keeps them fresh and contemporary. The fun, simple story gives children the thrill of being in on Benson’s secret adventure.

Download or read book Wedding the Wild Particular written by Robert Benson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I taught undergraduates for forty-five years (the last thirty at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee), and for most of those years I spent as much time as possible outside. I hunted as much as I could, and I fished some. I also spent time in the woods of Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi just walking around looking at things that caught my eye and trying to understand. Outdoor life and academic life for me have been intimately connected, and this collection of essays explores that connection. The essays in Wedding the Wild Particular make plain the sheer delight I have taken in the primary world and the degree to which that delight has enriched my academic vocation. They make what I believe is a coherent argument for the importance of natural literacy in the intellectual life." --Robert Benson

Book excerpt: Make Way For Lucia, also known as Mapp and Lucia, is a collective name for a series of novels by E. F. Benson about Emmeline "Lucia" Lucas and Elizabeth Mapp. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling, closely based on Rye, East Sussex, where Benson lived for a number of years and served as mayor. Contents: Queen Lucia Miss Mapp Lucia in London Mapp and Lucia Lucia's Progress or The Worshipful Lucia Trouble for Lucia The Male Impersonator Desirable Residences Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories.
