Download or read book Queer Horror written by Sean Abley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning, horror has been part of the cinema landscape. Despite some of the earliest genre films with gay directors such as F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu) and James Whale (Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein), LGBTQIA characters have rarely been portrayed in full view. For decades, filmmakers have included "coded" content in their films with the homosexual experience translated into censor-friendly subtext for consumption by general audiences. Gradually, LGBTQIA characters and themes have moved from the background to the foreground as the horror genre has grown along with its audience's tastes and attitudes. Likewise, more and more LGBTQIA writers and directors have begun to offer their queer-centric takes on scary movies and today, "queer horror" is a thriving film genre. With more than 900 entries, this critical filmography is a comprehensive, critical, yet playful examination of the history of LGBTQIA content in horror films. Eight journalistic contributors dig into every era of scary movies, including the early silents, pre- and post-Hays Code content, grindhouse sleaze, LGBTQIA indies, and megaplex studio releases. From Whale's The Old Dark House (1932) to Don Mancini's Chucky films and everything in between, this collection explores what can be found at the intersection of "LGBTQIA" and "horror" in the film industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a child, I would have looked you in the eye and told you I wanted to be a bird when I grew up. It was every child's dream at that time to be anything they weren't. Life passed with every fleeting imagination then, every absurd thought that entertained our masterminds. Worlds were made and forgotten to come and go and use as we pleased, where life was normal. We clothed ourselves with imagination as with immortality... The world is a marvelous place for a young Hebrew girl with a burgeoning imagination. Abra's audacity, frankness, and strong sense of justice often put her family at risk, to the unease of her elder brother, Benjamin, who understands the rising intensity of their world under Nazi occupation better than she. Life is twisted unexpectedly when, one November night in Vienna, Jewish shops, synagogues, and homes are burned by the Schutzstaffel. With the death of their father and the disappearance of their mother, sixteen-year-old Benjamin is forced to take care of his little sister on his own. Together in an abandoned attic, they create a hidden world to preserve their childhood and keep their dreams, humor, talents, and love alive. Despite such disheartening odds, Benjamin, Abra, and their friend Enoch are determined to cling to their humanity as their humanity is reduced to ashes. Where Birds Go to Die is a story of persistence, faith, and the exploration of the complexity and beauty of the human soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughstock: Part Two Coke's Clown How does Dillon take care of Coke when Coke's destroying himself? Bullfighter Coke is having a rough time in the Roughstock universe. When his dear friend Sam Bell is injured at the finals of the bull riding season, he takes that and his injuries pretty hard. His very own clown, Dillon, is determined to take care of Coke, which is tough when Coke is usually the one to care for everyone. Coke has a huge secret from his past, though, and, when Dillon digs to discover what it is, the skeletons in Coke's closet threaten to destroy both men. Back to Back Landon knows who he wants, he's been dreaming about Adam Taggart his whole life. Tag, though? He thinks Landon's too poor, too young, too wrong to be his. Landon Gaudet may not be the best bull rider on earth, but he knows that's where the money is in rodeo. His Cajun heart is more involved with horses, though, and with finding the cowboy he's been dreaming of all of his relatively short life. Adam Taggart has been around the block more than once, and while he thinks Landon is special, he also thinks the kid deserves better than a safety man with more than his share of notches on the bedpost. Adam does everything he can to resist Landon, but there's not a man alive who doesn't love being loved, so eventually he gives in. Landon can't believe that Adam is finally with him, that his cowboy has finally come around to his way of thinking. The only problem is that Adam isn't sure he deserves love, or that he really has any to give. He questions everything from his need for Landon to his family's assertion that he can do better than a boy from the bayou. Can Landon show Adam that sometimes magic is real, and that all you really need is to have a little faith? Pulled from All Sides Balta is all fire and fury, Joa is his haven. What happens when Raul becomes their third? Joa is an anomaly on the bullriding circuit—he's Brazilian but grew up in Texas, so he's not sure where he fits in. Champion Brazilian rider Balta knows just where he wants Joa to be, both in his life and in his bed. Raul is new to the bullriding circuit and needs their help learning the ropes. From the start, Raul knows that Joa belongs with Balta, but he also knows that Balta's career is on its way down and the world is ripe for another champion from Brazil. When Balta decides that Raul is just what he and Joa need to even out the balance of power, they have to find common ground—professionally, publicly and, most importantly, personally.

Book Culture Shock and Japanese American Relations

Download or read book Culture Shock and Japanese American Relations written by Sadao Asada and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Commodore Perry sailed into Uraga Channel, relations between the United States and Japan have been characterized by culture shock. Now a distinguished Japanese historian critically analyzes contemporary thought, public opinion, and behavior in the two countries over the course of the twentieth century, offering a binational perspective on culture shock as it has affected their relations. In these essays, Sadao Asada examines the historical interaction between these two countries from 1890 to 2006, focusing on naval strategy, transpacific racism, and the atomic bomb controversy. For each topic, he offers a rigorous analysis of both American and Japanese perceptions, showing how cultural relations and the interchange of ideas have been complex--and occasionally destructive. Culture Shock and Japanese-American Relations contains insightful essays on the influence of Alfred Mahan on the Japanese navy and on American images of Japan during the 1920s. Other essays consider the progressive breakdown of relations between the two countries and the origins of the Pacific War from the viewpoint of the Japanese navy, then tackle the ultimate shock of the atomic bomb and Japan's surrender, tracing changing perceptions of the decision to use the bomb on both sides of the Pacific over the course of sixty years. In discussing these subjects, Asada draws on Japanese sources largely inaccessible to Western scholars to provide a host of eye-opening insights for non-Japanese readers. After studying in America for nine years and receiving degrees from both Carleton College and Yale University, Asada returned to Japan to face his own reverse culture shock. His insights raise important questions of why people on opposite sides of the Pacific see things differently and adapt their perceptions to different purposes. This book marks a major effort toward reconstructing and understanding the conflicted course of Japanese-American relations during the first half of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Doll written by Maria Teresa Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. The haunted doll has long been a trope in horror movies, but like many fears, there is some truth at its heart. Dolls are possessed-by our aspirations. They're commonly used as a tool to teach mothering to young girls, but more often they are avatars of the idealized feminine self. (The word "doll" even acts as shorthand for a desirable woman.) They instruct girls what to strive for in society, reinforcing dominant patriarchal, heteronormative, white views around class, bodies, history, and celebrity, in insidious ways. Girls' dolls occupy the opposite space of boys' action figures, which represent masculinity, authority, warfare, and conflict. By analyzing dolls from 17th century Japanese Hinamatsuri festivals, to the '80s American Girl Dolls, and even to today's bitmoji, “Doll” reveals how the objects society encourages us to play with as girls shape the women we become. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.
