Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Chautauqua, written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut and originally published in 1921, is a comprehensive account of the history and development of the Chautauqua Institution, a cultural and educational center located in Chautauqua, New York. The book traces the origins of the Chautauqua movement, which began as a series of summer lectures and religious retreats in the late 19th century, and follows its growth into a national phenomenon that attracted millions of visitors each year. Hurlbut's book delves into the various aspects of the Chautauqua experience, including its religious and educational programs, its recreational activities, and its impact on American culture and society. He explores the lives and contributions of key figures in the Chautauqua movement, such as John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller, and describes the various buildings and landmarks that make up the Chautauqua grounds. Throughout the book, Hurlbut emphasizes the importance of the Chautauqua Institution as a place of intellectual and spiritual growth, and as a symbol of the progressive ideals of the era. He also touches on the challenges and controversies that the institution faced over the years, including financial struggles, changing social attitudes, and the impact of World War I. Overall, The Story of Chautauqua offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of America's most beloved cultural institutions, and provides insights into the social and intellectual currents that shaped the nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Book Humorous Hits and how to Hold an Audience

Download or read book Humorous Hits and how to Hold an Audience written by Grenville Kleiser and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1908 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparing this volume the author has been guided by his own platform experience extending over twelve years. During that time he has given hundreds of public recitals before audiences of almost every description, and in all parts of the country. It may not be considered presumptuous, therefore, for him to offer some practical suggestions on the art of entertaining and holding an audience, and to indicate certain selections which he has found have in themselves the elements of success. The "encore fiend," as he is sometimes called, is so ubiquitous and insistent that no speaker or reader can afford to ignore him, and, indeed, must prepare for him in advance. To find material that will satisfy him in one or in a dozen of the ordinary books of selections is an almost impossible task. It is only too obvious that many compilations of the kind are put together by persons who have had little or no practical platform experience. In an attempt to remedy this defect this volume has been prepared.

Book Plant Behaviour and Intelligence

Download or read book Plant Behaviour and Intelligence written by A. J. Trewavas and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a convincing argument for the view that whole cells and whole plants growing in competitive wild conditions show aspects of plant behaviour that can be accurately described as 'intelligent'. Trewavas argues that behaviour, like intelligence, must be assessed within the constraints of the anatomical and physiological framework of the organism in question. The fact that plants do not have centralized nervous systems for example, does not exclude intelligent behaviour. Outside the human dimension, culture is thought largely absent and fitness is the biological property of value. Thus, solving environmental problems that threaten to reduce fitness is another way of viewing intelligent behaviour and has a similar meaning to adaptively variable behaviour. The capacity to solve these problems might be considered to vary in different organisms, but variation does not mean absence. By extending these ideas into a book that allows a critical and amplified discussion, the author hopes to raise an awareness of the concept of purposive behaviour in plants.

Book Microbial Versatility in Varied Environments

Download or read book Microbial Versatility in Varied Environments written by Raghvendra Pratap Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book compiles the latest studies on microorganisms thriving in extreme conditions. Microbes have been found in extremely high and low temperatures, highly acidic to saline conditions, from deserts to the Dead sea, from hot-springs to underwater hydrothermal vents- the diversity is incredible. The various chapters highlight the microbial life and describe the mechanisms of tolerance to these harsh conditions, and show how an understanding of these phenomena can help us exploit the microbes in biotechnology. The theme of the book is highly significant since life in these environments can give vital clues about the origin and evolution of life on earth, as a lot of these conditions simulate the environment present billions of years ago. Additionally, the study of adaptation and survival of organisms in such environments can be important for finding life on other planets. This book shall be useful for students, researchers and course instructors interested in evolution, microbial adaptations and ecology in varied environments.
