Book excerpt: From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind, once again set out on the High Plains in Holt, Colorado. When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him; her devotion softens the bitter absence of their estranged son, Frank, but this cannot be willed away and remains a palpable presence for all three of them. Next door, a young girl named Alice moves in with her grandmother and contends with the painful memories that Dad's condition stirs up of her own mother's death. Meanwhile, the town’s newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained relationships with his wife and teenaged son, a task that proves all the more challenging when he faces the disdain of his congregation after offering more than they are accustomed to getting on a Sunday morning. And throughout, an elderly widow and her middle-aged daughter do everything they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors. Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times. Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it, including its extinction, as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. Here Kent Haruf gives us his most indelible portrait yet of this small town and reveals, with grace and insight, the compassion, the suffering and, above all, the humanity of its inhabitants.

Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist A heartstrong story of family and romance, tribulation and tenacity, set on the High Plains east of Denver. In the small town of Holt, Colorado, a high school teacher is confronted with raising his two boys alone after their mother retreats first to the bedroom, then altogether. A teenage girl—her father long since disappeared, her mother unwilling to have her in the house—is pregnant, alone herself, with nowhere to go. And out in the country, two brothers, elderly bachelors, work the family homestead, the only world they've ever known. From these unsettled lives emerges a vision of life, and of the town and landscape that bind them together—their fates somehow overcoming the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant. As the milieu widens to embrace fully four generations, Kent Haruf displays an emotional and aesthetic authority to rival the past masters of a classic American tradition.

This makes them a Biblical norm for the end of worship - something we should consider doing each time we leave God's presence and go out into the world. If you are involved with leading worship in the church or in the home your next question will be 'Where do I go to find them?' Fortunately Robert Vasholz has done the legwork for you. He has collected in this one book the benedictions found in scripture along with some additional scripture enriched blessings for use during worship. Use them to help Christians have a greater effect on the world.

Book excerpt: Huffing, puffing, and cussing..why are you acting this way and you just left church? Are you the same person after church that you are during worship service? After the Benediction is a reality-based effective tool addressing challenges that many Christians face today such as controlling in-laws, hellacious bosses, pretentious pastors, dysfunctional families, illnesses, financial ruin and the most gratifying temptation of all.flesh. This compelling and unique book offers victory, strength and salvation to overcome those challenges. Although the journey of life is sometimes unpredictable, believers must know an abundant, victorious, peaceful life is a reality. This extraordinary book opens with a preface that is all too familiar. "Saturday-Night Special" has a sultry, provocativestoryline with opposing influences of good and evil. The decisions we make are not necessarily based on our moral conduct or religious heart ties. Sometimes we do what we like because it feels good and then comes the guilt. Each chapter thereafter makes verbal contribution so that the reader can be inspired because God is not like man. He does not engage in one night relationships. His love is so everlasting; you can call him the morning after. Christians experience empowerment for approximately 2 hours on Sunday. Upon their departure from service, sin approaches in all forms to discredit the word of God. Once the doors are closed, there is a real devil desiring to tear believers apart. Therefore, truth and knowledge are needed to guide individuals from remaining cemented in the problem to seeking answers. Therefore, nonbelievers can truly benefit because salvation is offered. Believers are balanced, bless and empowered because the power and glory of God is available After the Benediction.

Book A Study of Jewish Worship from Sacrificial Cult to Rabbinic Benedictions and Prayers

Download or read book A Study of Jewish Worship from Sacrificial Cult to Rabbinic Benedictions and Prayers written by Dr. Martin Sicker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judaism, the origin of which dates from the rejection of polytheism by the patriarch Abraham nearly four thousand years ago, is committed to the worship of the one and only God. In the course of that long period of devotion, the character of that worship has evolved from a primitive form to progressively more sophisticated approaches necessitated by historical circumstances. The present study is concerned primarily with the original concept of worship of the divine in the form of a sacrificial cult, conducted by a priestly hierarchy, as described in the biblical Pentateuch, and the later transition to a democratized form of verbal worship conducted by the laity in a synagogue or by the individual in one’s home, as described in the rabbinic literature. One of the significant difficulties encountered in such a study is the translation of biblical and rabbinic Hebrew texts into English, which employs terminology such as ‘worship’ and ‘prayer’, terms which have no reliable biblical or rabbinic Hebrew equivalent. Accordingly, the common equation of worship, in the general sense of reverence paid to a god, with prayer, in the more precise Jewish sense of supplication or petition, can be misleading. Indeed, prayer, understood in the latter sense, constitutes a rather small segment of the voluminous liturgy of Jewish worship, much of which is drawn directly from Scripture, whereas prayer as petition, both formal and personal, is primarily the product of individuals confronting a variety of challenges to their and their coreligionists’ social and physical wellbeing. The principal focus of this study is on prayer, understood in the latter sense, which is traditionally interconnected with benedictions intended to give hope to those petitioning for divine beneficence.
