Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A intriguing tale of métis buffalo hunts, a long-lost daughter, and a macabre secret. Big John McTavish has been hunting and trading among the métis buffalo hunters of the Red River Valley for more than thirty years. He’s a trusted member of the half-breed nation, and a leader of the mixed-bloods’ twice-yearly buffalo hunts. However, when he returns to the settlements in the fall of 1832 with a mountain man he’s rescued from a Chippewa war party, he has no way of knowing the chain of events the outsider is about to unleash on the unsuspecting hunters, or the kind of destruction that will follow them onto the buffalo ranges that border the lonely Missouri River. Before the hunters return to their homes along the river, Big John will learn the macabre secret that has brought the trapper from the far reaches of the Rocky Mountains. He will discover a daughter he thought he’d lost forever, and relive the horror that took her away. And the métis will come to realize that if they are to survive as an independent nation, they must forever free themselves of the influence not only of the powerful Hudson Bay Company, but also of the man they have viewed as their friend for more than a quarter of a century. Beneath a Hunter’s Moon is a novel of honor and treason, love and betrayal, but mostly it is a story about a proud and wonderful people—the métis of the Red River Valley. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book excerpt: Whats the worst thing that can happen to a scientist? For Adam Boone, it was to see something that defied scientific explanation. When he was in high school, one of friends vanished during an autumn hailstorm in a flash of light; an event only he saw. Unable to explain what happened, he lied to the authorities investigating the disappearance. Already mistrusted as an outsider in his own home town, the incident caused him and the other friends who were on the hill that night to be shunned by his neighbors. Adam left Milltown, North Carolina after high school graduation, attended college and achieved his dream of becoming an archaeologist. After a near-fatal accident, Adam returns to his home state. He reconnects with his old high school friends and must face, once again the events of that night. Why have he and the others received letters taunting them about that night, hinting of future retribution? What can any of them do when faced with the abduction of their children and murder? What is the connection to that night? And why is Adam the only one who ever left Milltown? Will they find the answers under a Hunters Moon?

Book excerpt: Six friends, drawn together by a common interest in the outdoors, discover that their deer camp, in the forested hills of a southern Indiana, was once at the center of a thriving community, a community that holds a dark history and appears to be holding a threatening future. All they ever wanted was to be left alone in their hideaway far from the pressures of the real world. Their passion for hunting is compromised when they find themselves caught up in the middle of outside world pressures pushing in on their sanctuary. Real issues with a variety of extenuating circumstances seem to all come to a head on their quiet hunting refuge. Insufferable things happen, people die, and everyone in the valley finds themselves in peril, but no one knows from where the danger comes. Fear and unwarranted suspicions heighten among the last few remaining residents. Lives are radically changed, and fears increase daily, hourly, and even minute by minute. A long, hard search for the truth casts suspicions on multiple suspects ranging from a government conspiracy to a handful of radicals. Former ex-cons, an industrial cover-up, and even the fourteen people living in the Elk Valley Community are placed on the list of viable suspects. As told from Jack CainA[a¬a[s perspective, he and his friend Ned are the central figures as their story unfolds. They play an integral part in the investigation through to the conclusion; yet both remain deceptive about some of the evidence that is never really revealed to the authorities.

But the young fighter winds up unhappily horizontal, and the enraged crime boss ups the ante by scouring the West for new opponents to take down Hawke. Blood Beneath the Hunter's Moon combines intriguing mystery, non-stop western action, and unexpected nuggets of laugh-out-loud humor in the fifth installment of what veteran action/adventure narrator Philip Benoit calls "the best buddy series since Robert B. Parker's Cole and Hitch."As noted western author Jeff Breland observes: "Carl Dane is fast becoming one of America's top western writers.
